MOG'S (SEMI) DAILY GAME RECOMMENDATIONS (GAMES YOU SHOULD PLAY WHY HAVEN'T YOU YET)

So I've played a lot of games over the years, right? Like, a lot. A shitload. And I've noticed that some of them don't get the love they deserve, they DO get the love they deserved but nobody's heard of them here, and sometimes well, I just like to give games a good shout out.

I like to give good work their due, and like I've said, I've played a lot of games, so I'm going to try this topic out. Basically, every so often, I'm going to post about a game or game series, and I'm going to tell you why you should check it out. Then, you guys hopefully talk about it. I highly recommend you check out every single game I talk about if you're able to. I have notoriously good taste. :awesome: Sound good? Here goes! First game is...

Suikoden (series)

Suikoden as a JRPG series is easily unlike any other you'll ever play. With five main entries in the series (Tierkries, the latest one doesn't count. Not because I dislike it, but it's not in the same universe/setting), this series is THE definitive, most bestest, JRPG series ever in terms of worldbuilding.

All five of the games takes place in the same world, but the sense of scale in the Suikoden world is so massive, that each entry takes place in its own country/geographical area/etc and its own place on the timeline. There's no other JRPG that has a storied history with events, wars, people (the series has about a thousand characters combined over the games), and concepts.

But it's not complicated! Every game focuses on its own narrative neatly and cleanly, with the main characters of each title focusing on how to stop a war, win a civil war, overcome their fate, or whatever.

With that said, these games have a political/war overtone in the series, with every title having something to do with a regional/national conflict, and you might just find one country that one main character helped save in one game, being the antagonist in another. Conversely, the Suikoden games that take place close in the timeline often have returning characters and friends as well.

The gameplay is pretty cool as well, with the main draw is that every single game has 108 characters to recruit. Not all of them are playable in terms of battle, but with the object of the games usually being to recruit an army and build up a fighting force/headquarters, it's fun as hell seeing what new contribution the chef/inventor/knight/supply guy will make when you get him on your side. Not to mention the various battle systems in each game, from your traditional RPG battles, to full scale war systems.

The Suikoden series are noted for being kinda rare nowadays, ESPECIALLY the second one, but the newer ones are easier to come across, and the first one is now on sale on the PSN. Worst come to worst, emulate dat shit.

Yeah but that one is shitty so fuck it.

I found your topic!

So yeah, I actually have never played suikoden. I always wanted to but didnt want to spend a shit load on the game on amazon or ebay.

I love some of the music and watching gameplay on youtube it seemed like a lot of fun. Just wish I had a ps3 to download it there or a working emulator lol. I gotta admit, im too lazy to configure espxe lol.
You can buy the first Suikoden on PSN for crazy cheap now if you do ever get a hold of a PS3. The newer ones (besides for the 2nd, and possibly 3rd one) aren't too bad on the pocket either.
Xenogears will be a recommendation at some point.
maybe.........

There will be all kinds of games from all kinds of genres, some you've heard of, some you know I like, and some completely out of left field.

I've played all the numbered entries of the series at least once, if not twice. I know the game I played through most recently was the fourth one. However, this thread reminded me that I've not played the original, 2, or 3, since, like, forever.
I have a feeling you'll be mentioning Street Fighter 3 Third Strike whilst mentioning that's it's probably the best fighting game every made (and there would be many people that would back you up on that).

Or you might not. Sorry, but I'm starting to associate you with the SF franchise...like, "Oh, Feldschlacht IV? Yeah he's the guy that likes Street Fighter."

I really enjoyed the original Suikoden. It's honestly one of the few jRPGs I have ever went back and replayed from start to finish (Gremio had to live!). I played the sequel and I liked it well enough... but never finished it. I plan to rectify that some day.

I looove the Suikoden series. It is in fact my favorite jrpg series, (who doesn't know this by now?) and it's truly an underrated series, a fact that surprises and saddens me deeply. Kids these days are all about their Tales of wathever, and other moe moe desu stuff like that...

But anyway. Suikoden 3 is my favorite entry on the series, and before someone says anything, I, like any other suiko-fan think that the story of S2 was sublime. But S3 gives protagonism to way many more characters and tells you a story from different perspectives (even the antagonist's!) and that's something I appreciate more in a game. S5 did an overall good job too so I'll place it in third. S4 and S1 are around the same level, I think. Yeah, I know there's almost a ten year gap between them and that should account for increased quality that isn't quite there, but as far as enjoyment goes, yeah, they're about equal. People only prefer S1 for nostalgia's sake. xP

If Konami ever releases Suikoden 6 I swear to become a monk and dedicate the rest of my life to helping others...

Even to this day I can't quite figure it out who exactly is in that cover. I only recognize Barbarossa, and I guess I read somewhere that the guy right below him was Teo. I also think is rather safe to assume the one riding Black (the dragon) is Futch ...But as for the others go, I don't know. Maybe, Leknaat? Windy? Jeane? Viki? Odessa? Viktor? Flik? I guess they could be almost anyone. xP

No doubt you are going to post up Saga Frontier 2. Believe it or not I have never played Suikoden 1, 2, 3, 4, and barely played 5 as the camera pissed me off too much.
If I were to make a suggestion as to the kind of games to recommend Mog. It'd be nice if they were games that were readily available today through either stuff like PSN, XBLA, VC or GoG. Basically I hope you're not going to drag out some obscure mid-nineties game that is completely and utterly unavailable through legal means.

I am going to post up some games that you may never have heard of. Good is good, and awesome is awesome, whether it's easy available or not. Don't worry, I'll post up some easy to find ones as well.
And speaking of which, let me accerate this topic since most of us have played Suikoden.

I'm back.

Snatcher

I recommend Snatcher to you just like I'd recommend RDR; play it right the fuck now. However, and somewhat unfortunately, it's not nearly as easy to get ahold of. Released by Konami and one of the earliest brainchildren of Hideo Kojima, Snatcher was first released only in Japanese for some weird computer format I have no idea what its about, and like, the MSX. No average person has these. HOWEVER, it was released with an updated translation and other goods for the Sega CD in America later on, and while yeah, you probably don't have a Sega CD either, its easy to emulate.

With that said, this game is really, really amazing, and even more so if you can let yourself go into its unconventional and rarely seen genre; the visual novel. Entirely plot based, film noir-esque, but playable in an investigative menu based 'choose your own adventure' format, Snatcher tells the tale of a stark future where body snatching, doppleganger androids known as Snatchers are kidnapping people worldwide, and Gillian Seed, the protagonist, is a new arrival to JUNKER, an anti Snatcher task force to get to the bottom of shit.

It sounds a lot of Blade Runner and is affectionately inspired by it, but Kojima's early, unspoiled creativity really shines here, as the plot is REALLY REALLY interesting and compelling, the voice acting is incontestably great (which is really saying something since people love to complain about voice acting nowadays). I haven't played its spiritual brother, Policenauts yet, but I will when I get the chance.

If you want to see some old school Kojima goodness, look no further, seriously. Also, check out Gillian's partner;

look familiar?

I was just thinking if the aim of the topic sort of is "games you should play, why haven't you yet" and the games in question are more or less impossible to get your hands on...

Well that's probably a fairly good reason why one hasn't played them yet and even though one should it's just not going to happen.

It is far more accessible (and absolutely free) for some people to download a Sega CD and emulate Snatcher than it is to drop 300+ on a current gen system and then another 50-60 on the game.

There's always technical snafu's with emulating, but not across the board. I can reasonably assume that most people will be able to buy or emulate the games I feature, if not one than the other. The topic marches on!
