My problem is with these cultural malfunctions and a cold, heartless society that destroys countless lives, daily.

i lol'd

stop the presses everyone, the japanese are destroying countless lives and using anime as their tool of destruction!

Anime Recommendations:
Berserk - Most brutal ending (of the anime, manga is still going I believe) I have ever seen ever.
Death Note - At least the first season. After it was kinda meh.
Soul Eater - Gorgeous art style. Left a few loose ends that it really could've capitalized on but definitely worth watching.
Trigun - Overall amazing. Has a splendid western shootout feel.
Cowboy Bebop - Not much story, but still excellent. (theme song is always fun to hear as well)
Samurai Champloo - My absolute favorite anime. Jin and Mugen are excellent characters that go together so well. The art style with the bold outline is simply awesome, and fast samurai fights? All sorts of win. Watched through this 10 times now. Once with the english dub then the other nine subbed.
Paranoia Agent - Pretty sweet plot twist. Kind of slow overall, especially since it's 13 episodes long. Still a good psychological thriller.
Escaflowne - Gundam doesn't have shit on Escaflowne. Big dragon armor that is fueled off of the user's blood? Nice.
GunGrave - Nice story of betrayal. Got a little weird towards the end though.
School Rumble - Legitimately funny anime. Harima is so easy to relate to and you actually feel for the guy. A lot of things that happen are so unexpected. (third season now plz)
Afro Samurai - Takes Brutality up a notch. I believe only five episodes, so it's like a really brutal samurai movie. (which they have a movie as well!)
Yu Yu Hakusho
- You can stop after the second season though. Don't bother. First two were excellent though.

Wow, thanks, I checked it out, and your trailer made me download the whole thing, currently at episode 8, very interesting so far!

Not once did I accuse Japanese people's of holding to these things, only Japanese culture. That is not to say that other country's cultures are not full of problems (Canada has riots over hockey games, and America has Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann). That is also not to say that the some horribly offensive sexism and negative stereotypes of different people's is not apparent in other mediums produced by cultures from all around the world, such as the horrendous over-sexualized reinvention of the Starfire character by DC Comics.

All of your arguments are subjective, and I find it amusing for you to bring up sarah palin and hockey riots in canada: This is a problem only depending on whom you happen to be. Otherwise, for the most part your post is offensive and not based on any real solid fact. That being said, opinions are near useless here.

SE Lain.
Alright listen up this is what you gotta do:

1. Watch Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi
2. Watch Gurren Lagann

Let's stay on topic, guys. Anime recommendations only!

With that said, I love .hack//sign and Cowboy Bebop. .hack is a nice drama - it's slow, but I love the story, characters, atmosphere, and especially the music. Cowboy Bebop is just awesome on every level - over the top, fun, and action packed.
Alright then, Watch serial experiments lain. It really is that good, and will open your eyes for the most part.

Kara no Kyoukai. All of the movies. It is... Amazing.
Also , I would advise MS Gundam, for the sheer campiness and Char.
And to finish my recommendations, kick back and watch Higuarashi. It is worth every second to finish the series.
A couple more awesome anime:

FLCL is probably my favorite anime ever. It's a love it or hate it kind of thing, but if you love it it almost inevitably ends up as a favorite. There's no middle ground!

Revolutionary Girl Utena is so complex that people have written essays on it--it's a deconstruction of shoujo and arguably the most symbolically dense anime ever made (it also has surfing elephants!) Haibane Renmei is a story of winged girls living quiet lives in a walled town that becomes a profound mediation on life and death. Now and Then, Here and There is an emotionally slaying story of a young idealist cast into a war-torn parallel world and forced to save his friends from death and destruction. Honey and Clover is a show about college that actually changes depending on what stage in life you are at when you watch it. It's pretty impressive!

There's a ton of other great stuff--Kara no Kyoukai, Kaiba, Evangelion, Giant Robo, Dennou Coil, etc.--but the above are probably some of the best. Monster is supposedly amazing too, as is Legend of the Galactic Heroes, but I haven't completed either so I can't say much about them other than that they are probably worth your time.

If you're looking for more awesome stuff, the following link basically covers almost every great show made over the past decade or so:

FLCL is indeed hilarious.
Lol another anime topic.

Well, now that the autumn anime season is underway, Fate/Zero is definitely the anime to watch this season! The prequel to Fate/Stay Night, and it's animated by a notable company, ufotable, whose animations and visuals are tons better than Studio Deen, the one behind Stay Night and UBW.

Here's the trailer for Fate/Zero:

I would say Shana III (Final Season) too, but so far, it's not as impressive :(

I love .hack//sign.

I love its story too, but I think to get the full experience, you oughta play the games as well, otherwise you won't understand a thing about this whole story...

School Rumble- (third season now plz)

In case you didn't know, Natook, the anime season of School Rumble is already over, and that the 3rd season is in 2-episode OVA format. Don't bother though, 'cause the end of School Rumble is a disappointment. (Yeah, 3rd season marks the ending). And this "3rd season" already aired like 3 years ago.

FLCL is indeed hilarious.

After finishing with Stein's Gate (epic epic EPIC), I checked out one episode of FLCL, and... oh my god that is so whacky and over the top, I just loved it, let's see what the other episodes are like.

Here are my current must watches.

* Fate/zero (it's still airing and you want to get in on the ground floor of this action)

* Puella Magi Madoka Magica (don't ask. just watch it. you'll thank me.)

* Steins;Gate: An out-of-work mad scientist accidentally invents a microwave that can send text messages into the past. Also he's voiced by Mamoru Miyano, the same guy who voices Light from Death Note.

* Kara no Kyoukai: Gorgeous art, gorgeous music, gorgeous cinematography, and a delightfully intriguing supernatural mystery with elements of horror.

I assure you I'm no where NEAR as STUPID as one might think.

Seems none of you, as far as I can tell, have ever heard of/watched Speed Grapher. It's a wonderful series. But I don't watch subs unless I get so much into the series that I can't sit and wait for Dubbed releases. It's dubbed pretty well.

Also to the one who says they never watch dubs. That's because it's near impossible to recreate the exact tone and such in English, and if they tried it'd be even worse.

I've heard the novels are pretty great, but also that the first episode is apparently 50 minutes of Magi table-circling action? To it's credit, though, I am currently marathoning through Heaven's Feel so that I'll be able to follow this with everyone else. The people who did Kara no Kyoukai animating Fate/stay night, political thriller mode sounds too neat to pass up!

Seconded.

Well, I've been watching fate/zero without playing through heaven's feel though so i guess it's all cool for me ^_^

Casually, that is one of the few animes that caught my attention this season* among all the usual ridiculous garbage. But the problem is that I don't know anything about the Fate/Saty Night universe. Would you still recommend someone like me to watch it?

*Others being 'Last Exile:FtSW' or 'Persona4' but it's the same problem with those.

I used to like animes like Dragon Ball and Saint Seiya (Animes that I still love just for nostalgias' sake) but I'd be hard pressed to watch an anime even remotely like that today. In fact, most genres bore the crap out of me, be either mechas the size of the universe or whatever magical girl happens to be in turn... And don't even get me started on animes that try too hard to be "deep" because I hate those the most. I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me what's so awesome about freakin' Evangelion.

Ah, just ranting a little here. Sorry. =/
Just finished Heaven's Feel. Holy shit.

Alright, Fate/zero is now on my watch list. Although I'm not sure whether any of it will be able to equal

Shirou fistfighting Kirei under the shadow of Avenger or Sakura going insane or Shirou stabbing Saber in the heart or or or or or

Then again this is the creator of Madoka Magica and Saya no Uta we are talking about so I guess I can put absolutely nothing past him. We shall see!

Not really sure. Fate/zero is a prequel to Fate/stay night, so it spoils a couple of the serious twists at the very start. There's also a lot of exposition and terminology to take in (this being the Nasuverse after all) and so having some familiarity with the material is probably a plus. Also it becomes clear pretty early in Fate/stay night that the Holy Grail War depicted in Fate/zero did not end well and so it is most likely more of a tragedy than anything else!

I'd probably suggest reading the visual novel first (although it certainly isn't for everybody!) Alternatively you could read the Let's Play, which comes with music and everything:

http://fsn.seorinwastaken.com/archive/

Or you could just watch Fate/zero instead--it's produced by ufotable (who helmed the excellent Kara no Kyoukai adaption) so there's a good chance it will be in the upper tier of Nasu adaptions rather than in the gutter (the Fate/stay night and Tsukihime adaptions). Again, though, you might find the talking and seriousness a little alienating.

I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me what's so awesome about freakin' Evangelion.

It's a pretty sympathetic portrait of an average kid with depression fighting against impossible odds. It's also a vicious critique of self-absorption as well as the very audience who are likely watching the show. It's also a study in miscommunication and how much it can sometimes hurt to connect with people. I wouldn't say that it's the best show, as some people have made it out to be, but when Evangelion is good it's pretty damn good. Also Asuka's fight with the MP Evas in End of Evangelion is probably the best death scene I've seen in any anime ever, so there is that!

Best is to at least watch Fate/Stay Night anime first so you'll get to understand what the people are saying in Fate/Zero. Watching Fate/Zero first may kinda spoil your fun if you watch Fate/Stay Night later.

Alternatively, you can play the visual novel first, but that is kinda time consuming though more detailed, unless you have a lot of time.

@yamata: All I can say is, Fate/Zero's setting is a lot darker than the setting of Fate/Stay Night ;)

Considering how dark Fate/stay night gets in the latter routes of the visual novel, I don't know if I am going to be able to survive the experience.

Is it wrong that I am looking forward to this? Kinoku Nasu vs. Gen Urobochi GO GO GO

Nasu casts EXPOSITION3! Urobochi casts ENTROPY!

No wonder he sounds so OTT/gets on my nerves

I've only seen a first few episodes of S;G and to be honest I haven't been hooked yet. It's cool that the show is quite sciency and heavily references an internet legend but the bland, sometimes obnoxious (hello Rintarou/Mayuri) characters take away from the whole experience. I'm hoping it picks up later on.

It definitely does YM. I was first annoyed by the main character as well and thought the first episodes could've been more straight forward, but if you can endure upto halfway, it'll definitely be worth it.

Also, there's several good animes mentioned in this topic that I'd like to vouch for as well, but I'll get to that later. What comes to Fate/Zero if it's anything like Fate / Stay Night, I'll stay far away from it.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica interests me though, even though it looks like something I wouldn't be too keen of, but it sounds like there's more to it than meets the eye. I'll probably check it out soon.
