THE WORLD ENDS WITH YOU

Nomura's artwork is fairly signature. I mean you can almost always tell Nomura had a hand in it when you see it (if nothing else, just count the number of zippers, but the way he uses lines and the proportions he uses are pretty obvious, too). So I don't think "generic" is the word you're looking for. Uninteresting, unmemorable, uninspired, maybe--but that's a matter of taste. I've never been as down on him as most people seem to be, but that's probably just because I don't mind people looking like a cross between Mickey Mouse and Gackt.
Personally I've enjoyed it a lot. It stands out from other games I've played, toys with a lot of really cool concepts in interesting and amusing ways and never feels like it's pandering. I know it's not cool to give Nomura credit, but the art style fits the game pretty perfectly (a lot better than it fit Kingdom Hearts, for example), and the use of graffitti and tattoo inspired artwork gives the whole thing a consistent and engaging visual style.
My only real complaint is that the hero is once again an angsty loner. And that the girls' pants and skirts are either worn way too low or there is way too much definition given to the abdomenal muscles. Feels a little squicky.

but I like the soundtrack and gameplay.
Yeah, i find the soundtrack to be really good as well. Square enix always compose some great music for the games.

This is basically Tetsuya Nomura vomiting all over a DS cartridge. I think this is what he's been wanting to make for years, maybe now that's he's expressed his "hip culture" fetish to its fullest extent he'll stop making all his shitty ideas seep into Final Fantasy games. (Yeah right.)
But yeah, the battle system is fun. The rest of the game's systems/mechanics are pretty interesting. If you ignore the terrible music and the NomuraTrash dripping down your DS screens (DEEP "LEAVE ME ALONE/I DON'T UNDERSTAND PEOPLE" TEENAGE CHARACTERS) it's a very fun game.
