A Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman discovers that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong.

I loved it.

The movie was almost too cool for its own good but I think Refn pulled it off. He showed a great understanding of mood and tone. I loved the super stylized directing and the music was unique it had kind of an 80s feel to it. The opening scene was a brilliant piece of film making, really dark and stylish. The violence was reminiscent of Tarantino in that it was ultra graphic but darkly comedic which made it work. A lot of action type movies these days use convoluted plot twists and make things unnecessarily complicated. The plot was straight forward and executed well.

With an inferior actor I could see the lead character being really hollow and stiff but Gosling was great at conveying emotion with little dialogue and subtle expression. Supporting cast was good, Albert Brooks was a good choice over a typical gangster type actor because he automatically gets some sympathy and has a built in comic relief aspect that makes his evil violent acts go down a little easier. Cranston was good but a little under used and Pearlman was ok but maybe a little too over the top. I thought Mulligan was miscast, I just can't picture her being a waitress at a Denny's married to a gang banger but she did ok and had great chemistry with Gosling.

This type of movie isn't for everyone. I could understand if someone thought it was over stylized or that Gosling's character was too much of the cliche strong silent type. But I think most would derive some enjoyment out of it. It is just a really entertaining 100 minutes.

Overall I thought it was the best movies of the year so far. One of my faves now too.
I always liked the 1997 "Drive". Good fight scenes and choreography and lots of fun as well :D

Will check this one out though.

This movie was awesome; amazingly, amazingly tense almost from the getgo.

It was also so ridiculously, excessively violent as to make ME flinch, which almost never happens. It devolved into silly over the top violence at some points, but at some points it was just brutal stuff that was raw and hard and I didn't want to look at.

Overall, a good movie, although I thought the conclusion was kind of weak--it would have been really easy for the situation the characters were in to have realistically been resolved without violence, or at least with less violence. The final kill crazy kill fest did not seem really earned. Even violent criminals are capable of reasoning and protecting their interests; in fact some of them are quite good at it.

There is something deeply wrong/disturbing/creepy with Ryan Gosling's character. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I was oddly unsettled by him.

The way in which

Albert Brooks dispatches Bryan Cranston

was amazingly awesome and simultaneously really really chilling.

That font choice is horrible. (Is he driving to the Prom?)

@Max - Finally someone else who loves this movie. All my friends and most of my family(except my older brother) just don't like this movie for some reason. My cousin said it's quite good but annoyingly slow at times, which is understandable with some of the Driver and Carey Mulligan moments.

It fits in with the movie and the 80s vibe.
The theater I work at was showing this movie last week. So I sat in after hours and watched a test screening with my co-workers.

All I can say is that this movie was not at ALL what I expected it to be. I cringed a little when the violent scenes started up, but I overall enjoyed it. I do agree that the final resolution scene didn't even need to be violent, but whatever. Gotta keep it exciting I suppose.
Wasn't the Rock in some movie called Drive over the summer?
"Faster" I think it was called.
This was the concept poster for the film.

That's pretty bad ass. I prefer the new font though compared to that one. Wonder what made them change their minds?
Well As per the box office reviews the movie is liked by the audience very well. This is my all time favorite movie to watch and enjoy.

Yeah I definitely thought the movie would be more about getaway driving and the 80s and less about gruesomely fatalistic violence.

(I do actually mean "fatalistic" as opposed to "fatal" or "lethal".)
