13 GHOSTS = ONE GRATE GAME IDEA.

Does anyone remember that show “The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo”?

It was a polarizing series I know, but the premise of re-capturing 13 daemons that the hero realised onto the world, now that was good, that had potential.

I was thinking of making a game with a similar premise, only you know good; the hero is tricked into opening a box that unlashes 13 evil forces, each the embodiment of a human on a vice or fear, and has to re-seal the back into the box before they destroy the world. Think “Shadow of the Colossus” without climbing on giant monsters.

Because you don’t know where these things are when you start the game you’ll have to read newspapers and listen to news reports and the like for paranormal activity that might indicate a ghost. Then you can travel there and investigate things further to locate the daemon. You’ll also be given a pendent or artefact or something that reacts to the daemons presence to help narrow down your search.
It would probably be an adventure game or an adventure/RPG but without levels or random encounters.

I’m not sure of the area you have to find the ghost in yet, but it would have to be large enough to provide some variety but small enough that travailing all over the place isn’t questionable.

Some ideas:
Japan: Not likely though since Japan has been done to death and it’s not that small.
Fictional European country: because I could design the place however I wanted.
New York or any large metropolitan city: The most likely choice.
This would all be in modern-ish times to where transport and infomasion is readily available.

So what do you think?

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Like almost any idea it depends on your skill as a director and writer.

If it is set in modern times then newspapers are not a realistic source of information. And I've never understood why fictional locations always seem to be in Europe. Oh well. I'm not complaining; my own game in progress is set in a fictional country in Europe also.

I will say that a game with only 13 battles in it is not a great fit for the RPG genre. Your game may work better as a detective-style adventure game in which the bosses take the form of puzzles. Alternately, perhaps the demons could each take control of a large number of humans? Like if one demon represented greed, it could mind-control all the people nearby and overwhelm them with greed (or just mind-control the greedy ones) and make them attack you. Then you'd actually have dungeons and such.

Ah good old Card Captors, I almost forgot about that show.
Yeah right now this is the “Hay cool idea, how would I do it” phase, where I just spout random idlers and sees what makes sense. So actually any suggestion at the moment would be welcome so bring it on.

That’s exactly what I was thinking, only there might be battles there might not be, again concept phase. Like the newspapers and such, that depends on when I actually set the game. If it’s the present 20xx then you’d just bump all your information of the internet, if it’s set in the 1980’s then the paper would be more relevant. Or I could have it in 1996 and have both.
I remember that show yes. I remember 13 Ghosts the movie as well which starred the guy who would play Shaggy in the Scooby Doo live action movies.

Remember when I actually used to make games? Me neither.

I suddenly had a bizarre vision of Phoenix Wright bringing 13 ghosts into a court room and OBJECTIONING! the shit from them.

It's an Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny between Tokyo Is the Center of the Universe and the Big Applesauce.

One way or the other, it's one awesome Weirdness Magnet against another Weirdness Magnet and either choice will be awesome.

If it is set in modern times then newspapers are not a realistic source of information.
Newspapers are still relevant today.

EDIT: Also, I'm fairly sure that some of the words in the OP got fired through a cheese grater.
And I love this idea...the only problem with it is you mentioned Scooby-Doo...now...I have to hear Scooby-Doo every single fucking day because of my brother, SO DON'T GET ME STARTED ON...FUCKING...SCOOBY...DOO!!!

Does it really have to be 13 of them. Why not more, like 72. And they would probably be based on the demons in the Ars Goetia.

72...where do you think we are? A 3d Mario game? That would get boring, you would need loads of minigames in the game to keep the player interested, and I bet even then it wouldn't be enough! -_-

That was A REMAKE dude. Link is to the original, which I'd assumed this thread was referencing, not...*shudder*...scooby doo.

reminds me of that whole Pandora's Box myth/legend/thingy
The Ars Goetia has already been used in Shadow Hearts: Covenant as a Materia-like magic and grid system, but I suppose that an RPG where the main quest is to beat all the 72 demons could go somewhere...

I've seen the 13 Ghosts movie remake and some scenes of the 1960 movie. A survival horror game based on these would be perfect. The fact that the player knows right at the beginning that there are 13 murderous spirits to defeat/escape from would be very appealing, I believe. You'd always be eager to meet the next one and see what trials you'd have to overcome in order to survive the encounter.

As for Scooby-Poo, I dunno.
I had the same idea only with 47 instead of 13, and set it in Japan:

I'm not sure if making one based on the remake of Thirteen Ghosts would really work (I haven't seen the original, although I'm sure it's better). As I recall they can't actually fight any of the ghosts. Unless you're going to suggest a Thirteen Ghosts/Ghostbusters crossover.

Now there's an idea...
