BOSS BATTLE DESIGN CONTEST - KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

Posts

Ohhhh I'll DEFINITELY be giving this a go. I've been waiting for something like this to pop up for quite a while. I'm always up for some good 'ol Boss-makin' action.

/has started already.
Why I am updating what I am doing,I don't know, but, my idea failed. I was trying to make a "fighting" screen, where you press a key and can get Shadow to move, and then if you want, press the action key...for something, well, I knew what I needed to get the event working, I must of put them in a bad order, or did something wrong or even left something out, but everytime I went in to test it, I couldn't get Shadow move, but only to the center, and the right, that's it, and each time I tried, it took a LONG time for it just to move him! HOW DO YOU GUYS MAKE MENU SCREENS THAT DON'T GO TOO SLOW?!? IT'S INSANE! -_- I'm getting pissed. But I'm not giving up!

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Okay Pyrodoom, we don't need a play-by-play. You can post the level when you're done.
I wholly support this and I will nag kentona about it
pyrodoom, you should probably start with something easier. You don't seem experienced enough to make a custom menu or battle system from scratch for a boss battle contest. Just work with the default systems or existing VX/XP scripts.

I would participate if I had more time. My plate is pretty full.

A few questions:

Is there a limit to the complexity of the battle mechanics itself? If not, then would the judging include how easy and intuitive the unique mechanics are? Are we allowed to explain what stuff does? (Not concerning the boss itself, but the battle system)

Is it also allowed to have difficulty selection? I am not sure what you may be looking for as your definition of easy/hard may as well differ from mine.

Edit: Do you mind unfinished graphics in the submission?

Last but not least, should the battle mechanics allow customization (equipment and stuff), should it be set automatically, or do we allow the player to set it him/herself before beginning the boss battle?
In the context of "Knowledge is power", I think that it would be related to optimizing your party before the boss encounter itself, like selecting the right elemental equipment for preparation. Otherwise you might have to design an in-battle equipment menu.
This is a really cool idea. Sadly I am suck at database. My money's on Rhyme :>

Also where is Deckiller and why isn't he participating in this.

Edit: Actually I might enter if I can find the time. :>

Okay, I am open to the possibility that this is a silly question, considering that this sentence was found under a bolded heading which read "rules", but...

- Obviously, the boss should not be one you've already made for another game. Nor should the player party.

How much of a RULE is this? How hard/soft/firm is this restriction, and how much wiggle room is there? (Obviously I don't mean just straight-out using database from another game, I mean reimagining and so-forth.)

I think I would like to do this.
Oh man, I been meanin' to git some action as far as gameplay goes.

MISTER I AM SO INTO THIS~

I can't think of any reason to include a limit, as long as you explain it. A tutorial seems appropriate if you're doing something pretty unusual - you would probably include a tutorial in the real game at the first point where the player encountered that system also. If the system or the fight is too hard to figure out, that would likely be bad for your score.

Works for me.

No problem. Graphics will not be judged.

I was thinking people would typically just set equipment and such automatically and go straight into the battle. Without having a dungeon full of normal battles to get used to the effects of the different equipment options, it seems likely to result in what feels like the player having to read your mind, which is bad game design and will probably negatively affect the judging of your battle. But if it's an important part of the battle and you don't think the way you're doing it is bad game design, go for it.

Re-imagining doesn't bother me so much - you're using an existing basic concept, but doing the work and making new gameplay. I don't want to be like "You can't use a berserker with high HP and a blue mage that starts with no skills in your party, you had a berserker with high HP and a blue mage that started with no skills in your other game." Most berserkers have high HP, most blue mages start with no skills, those are basic class roles. Use your own judgement. If it feels like a new fight to you, then it's a new fight.

That said, my purpose with this rule was more than just to keep people from submitting work they'd already done. It was to get people to make battles outside their comfort zone, to get them not to do things the same way as they always do, to encourage personal innovation and experimentation. I don't just want to give out a fair prize, I also want to get people thinking about how to make battles.
By the way, the going rate for mapping contests is 10 MS achievement for all participants, and 20 MS achievement for the winner. I think that could apply to this contest as well.

Sounds like a solid makerscore reward.

As for where I am...well, let's just say I just had the worst weekend ever and am house sitting.

I'd go higher on the MS award for the winner, Kentona, but then again I'm biased by my desire to be that winner (and my voracious desire for imaginary points).

EDIT:

Are graphics and music really not going to be a factor in the judging? How bizarre.

This event sounds awesome. Unfortunately, my school work is keeping me busy at the moment so I won't be able to join, but I just wanted to say that it's a great idea!

Seconded! We really do need more contests oriented towards RPG battles.

Im in!!!

Question: Can i just make the game require the VX/XP RTP (havnt decided which i will use yet),
or do i have to make it standalone.
Do we need to have some kind of Prefix on the game submission when we load it onto the site? I mean so that there aren't a dozen "games" that are actually just a single boss fight? Like BossContest2011-OmEgAbLaStErSuPrEmE!!! or whatever the title would be?

Hoddmimir, just upload it to your locker rather than submitting it as a game.

Please make it standalone, Idida, since there will be lots of judges and not all of them will have the RTPs for every single engine. Try to keep the filesize down since there will be lots of entries. I recommend removing all the music, ambient background sounds, battlebacks, and enemies that you're not using...

Are the entries going to be anonymized for judging? That'd probably be a pretty wise choice, to keep this from becoming a popularity contest.
