CHRONO CROSS APPRECIATION/DEPRECATION/WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN THREAD

It's definitely not an unrelated game.
It has more unrelated parts than related. So, it's unrelated.
I think they tried to create a whole new experience while trying to keep it a part of the Trigger Universe, and failed at it for the most part.
It is a hell of a lot better as it's own game, than a part of the Trigger Universe.
It just doesn't do the original series justice enough to even be liked as part of the Trigger Universe, in my honest to God opinion.
Would you guys be happier if it was just another Final Fantasy series, carbon copying itself into oblivion?
I just don't see why so many people like it as part of the Chrono Trigger Universe, when it is so obviously more unrelated to the game, than anything in it that is actually related to it. People sure don't care much for Canon in a series these days.
But it is part of the Chrono Universe, regardless of what you or I have to say about it.
Besides, there are more connections than you think, but they're definitely subtle and under the surface.

I really like that Chrono Trigger took the approach of "Same Place, Different Time" and Chrono Cross took the approach "Same Time, Different Place".
Where could they possibly go next with that series? :)

I think Chrono Trigger is a definite masterpiece, especially retroactively, but I can understand why someone wouldn't think it's great.
Why is the definition of RPG vanilla a "masterpiece?" Would you still defend it against modern games, or are you saying this based entirely on the context of its release (in which case, your point is completely moot)?
That and can someone please explain to me exactly how the leveling system worked? I know there were no levels per se, but it seemed completely random when characters would get stat bonuses after fights. I cannot understand the logic of the stat bonus system with regards to building your characters up in battles.
To my knowledge, there were three ways to gain stats:
1) Gain a star, usually by defeating a boss. These are the big stat ups, everybody gets a big boost in stats. It also applies to characters who aren't in the battle but they need to get in a fight to get the stat boosts to apply to them.
2) Get HP boosts by killing enemies. These are what you get by killing mooks after getting a star level. HP boosts are insignificant (+1 HP iirc).
3) An extra boost by killing enemies. Kill enough enemies while everybody is getting their +1 HP and eventually everybody will get a stat gain that's a bit more than just HP but not as much as a star level. After this you generally stop gaining stats. I think this only applies to characters in your party, that whoever you never used won't get this stat boost unlike star level stat gains.
Generally get star levels. It's all you really need.

??? The fact that it has any related parts at all makes it related, dude.
Oh, so guessing Dragonball GT is related, even though it isn't canon due to not being made by the original creator and not in the Manga. Yet it tried to throw in related shit to make us believe it is part of the Dragonball Universe.
Cross is far from canon, and even though they threw in shit, doesn't make it part of the original series.

I tried my hand at Chrono Cross. I absolutely hated how enemies "broke the rules" by being able to cast a spell first action, whereas I had to build up my attack levels, or whatever, before I could cast anything. Also, I'm pretty sure that whatever party members I obtained did not transfer over to a New Game+. I could be wrong on that point, though.

No what I'm saying is that it's literally canon, countless interviews from the creators, books, etc say so. They even clarify that Cross is canon and Radical Dreamers isn't. It's the creators world, not yours. You don't 'get' to say something is canon/not canon because you don't like it. Are you on crack?

You didn't read my tumblr article on it? It's entirely my opinion, though. Keep in mind that you and I have different attitudes on game design, for me, games are more of an emotional thing to connect to than most anything else. Game mechanics and all that technical jazz don't have to be stellar for me to really put a game up as great. Yeah, I'd still defend it against modern games. I still do, considering I spend upwards of 60 dollars on brand new games, so it's not like I stopped playing in the PS1 age or whatnot.
But like I said, subjective.

And although I never got that far, I'm pretty sure the final boss in CC is related to a major character in Chrono Trigger
(Schala)
(In other news, I can't believe I'm using the word 'canon' seriously)
There's also a lot of stuff directly related to Trigger; El Nido is off the coast of Porre, Porre is a major power in the game, Sprigg being a Mystic, Belthasar and Robo make an appearance, Lucca is an important background character, Schala, the Chrono Trigger is an important item and plot point, so on and so forth.
While yeah I would have liked it to be a closer sequel, Cross is an important and definitely related link to Trigger. Anyone who says otherwise simply doesn't know enough about Cross beyond 'hey where's Chrono'. It's a pretty deep and even a little convoluted, especially compared to how simple Trigger was.
You can carry over characters from other playthroughs.

Adopted daughter. She found Kid as a baby with Schala's pendant. One of the endings in the PSN Chrono Trigger has an animation showing it.

it isn't canon due to not being made by the original creator
I'm guessing you don't read comic books?
Man why am I even commenting on a canon debate. Then again I haven't played Trigger, so it's interesting hearing some of these connections!
Well reason I thought it wasn't canon is because I could have swore that the person who created the original story for the series, wasn't part of the cross team.
That is why I never much liked it, because to me, if the original creator of a story doesn't join up, and some other person takes over the story, I feel it isn't canon.
Because you can't really have someone else take over a story, and just add whatever they want and it magically be a canon part of it. Reason why so many people hate Dragonball GT, is because the creator wasn't part of it.
I could be wrong, about the writer of the story not being part of it, and then if that's the case, it's obviously canon.

Hey I think I remember my lavos fangirl friend was telling me that Chronic Trigger caused anomalies that spawned the Chrono Cross parallel dimension to contain the changes or some shit? And of course Cross's Another world is caused by an in-game explain splinter event.
Anyway if its a parallel Trigger world, it would better explain cameos.
