MULTITASKING ON THE COMPUTER

I'm asking this just out of curiosity, but depending on what I read here, I may try and turn it into a research subject.
I want you guys to talk about how you multitask when you're on the computer.
I mean, how many things do you do at once?
How many windows do you open, and how many tabs on your browser?
How frequently do you switch between tasks?
Are there any websites you refresh often?
Does the excessive multitasking prevent you from focusing on what you need to do?
Do you get the feeling of wasted time?
Do you try to control yourself?
Do you feel any difficulty in keeping attention to a single thing (like writing a school paper) for prolonged periods?
I have a lot of trouble with this myself. Usually when I turn on the computer I open mirc, I open my browser with at least 3 tabs, and often I'll open some work thing on MS Word or RPG Maker. If I don't have enough things open, I get uneasy and I open MSN and sometimes Facebook chat. There are some sites I refresh quite often, like RMN.net and facebook. Sometimes I want to write an e-mail, and it takes me hours, because I keep switching tasks while I'm doing it. It has been worse before, recently I've been able to focus a lot more. I want to know what's it like for other people.

I do multitask but I don't believe I do it on the same level like you do. I tend to eat and use the computer at the same time while also listening to music in the background and surfing the net and reading articles. I also watch anime while eating but thats as far as multitasking goes for me.
If I happen to be doing more than 3 things at once or trying to do some educational work then I'll lack in terms of focus and concentration but I think I am able to divide my attention equally for all tasks.

1.I mean, how many things do you do at once? On the internet, no more then 2-3 uless I don't have some other stuff like I open a site on one of my tabs and it opens another. Then there are times where I have RPG maker open, loads of tabs on Internet Explorer/Google Chrome, and also possibly(and never again), have a SONY VEGAS MOVIE rendering at the same time...-_- and then there's the calculator, so I can do all that.
2.How many windows do you open, and how many tabs on your browser? Look at 1.
3.How frequently do you switch between tasks?Whenever I get what I want done, dine, I will switch, like at the end of this post I may open notepad for my ancient language I made up and go RPing on Fanfiction.Com, continue on my book and/or NaNoWriMo, or go to my RPG maker window and edit something I don't like.
4.Are there any websites you refresh often?Yes, all of them because they always freeze, but barely when anything else is open.
5.Does the excessive multitasking prevent you from focusing on what you need to do? No, or at least not all the time, right now I know I should be doing BrainChild, but I want to finish this post first.
5.Do you get the feeling of wasted time?Yes, I'd be watching a video, and I would be wanting it to end so I can go do something else, but I want to be watching the video as well, and it makes me feel like I'm wasting my time watching some video, and for other situations it's the same, RPG making can be wasteful, RPing can be wasteful, ECT.
6.Do you try to control yourself? Nope, I actually like it, multitasking for me seems to get something done quicker instead of waiting(NO.5 is a bad example of this situation ^_^)
Do you feel any difficulty in keeping attention to a single thing (like writing a school paper) for prolonged periods? Yeah, but I always get work done in a short amount of time either way, whether I'm multitasking with homework and sites, or just doing homework ^_^.

I mean, how many things do you do at once?
On average I:
1. Listen to music.
2. Have IRC open in the background. May or may not take part in chatter.
3. Have Trillian (AIM/MSN) open in the background. Usually don't have much in the way of chatter.
4. Have Firefox open, either in the fore- or background. May or may not be actively reading a page.
5. Passively downloading/uploading anime via BitTorrent.
I then have stuff added on to the list depending on the situation, such as having Media Player Classic open for watching my anime.
How many windows do you open, and how many tabs on your browser?
Windows Taskbar: 15~20 windows open on average. From right after when Windows has finished booting up.
Firefox: 103 tabs open right now. I usually average about 100 tabs and I always have Firefox open up with ~100 tabs whenever I reboot the computer and need to start it again. Just in case you're curious, Firefox is currently taking ~280MB of RAM and ~450MB of virtual memory.
IRC: Currently idling on 32 channels over 5 networks. 24 of the channels are from Rizon.
How frequently do you switch between tasks?
I Alt-Tab subconciously, so I wouldn't know (read: a whole damn lot).
Are there any websites you refresh often?
TokyoTosho, RMN, xkcd, and Manly Guys Doing Manly Things comes to me off the top of my mind. I also frequent Wikipedia and Dictionary.com for my referencing needs.
Does the excessive multitasking prevent you from focusing on what you need to do?
Not really. If I need to be doing something, I'm doing it.
Do you get the feeling of wasted time?
Nope.
Do you try to control yourself?
Control myself from what, exactly?
Do you feel any difficulty in keeping attention to a single thing (like writing a school paper) for prolonged periods?
Like the question about focusing, if I need to do something then I'm doing it until it's finished perfectly.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

If I'm playing a game or watching a movie or immersed in some other work of fiction, that is all I will be doing. I really only enjoy stuff like that when I'm totally immersed in it.
If I'm not, then chances are I have IRC, my MUD, RPG Maker, the rpgmaker.net forums, the Kingdom of Loathing chat, and instant messenger open while surfing various websites and doing whatever else I'm doing. If I'm not immersed in something, I see no reason not to talk to anyone who wants to talk to me and join in any conversation I find interesting and check out anything that's cool.
The idea of "preventing me from focusing on what I need to do" is not a relevant or meaningful question for me. My job is not more important than my happiness. It exists to help finance my happiness. If in the process it's keeping me from doing stuff I enjoy, then for me that makes it a crappy counterproductive job. Yes, it's still paying my bills so that I don't starve or freeze, but... any job can do that. It's not that hard to find a job that also lets me enjoy my life, and (for now) I've done so. Other people have different priorities in their lives, but to me, being able to do stuff I enjoy is important.
I never had to focus on any one thing for school either. Multitasking worked fine when doing work in both high school and college.

I mean, how many things do you do at once?
Just a couple of things at a time, like browsing the internet while using VX, Photoshop, or writing something. If I'm playing a game that runs in fullscreen, I'm totally focused on that if I'm enjoying it.
How many windows do you open, and how many tabs on your browser?
One window. I keep the number of my tabs pretty low since each one is pretty taxing on my laptop's RAM (especially with Chrome). When I have a lot of tabs up, it's when I middle click many things like forum posts.
How frequently do you switch between tasks?
As a frequent alt-tabber, I don't keep track

Does the excessive multitasking prevent you from focusing on what you need to do?
Not really--it's the procrastination that gets me.
Do you get the feeling of wasted time?
Only if a due date's coming up fast.
Do you try to control yourself?
Yes, by:
- doing classwork on campus instead of at home
- disconnecting from the Internet entirely
- using Google Calendar's tasks pane
Do you feel any difficulty in keeping attention to a single thing (like writing a school paper) for prolonged periods?
I used to focus on reading books a few years ago, and I'd finish them quickly. The internet has pretty much shot my attention span so badly that I frequently lose my place in a book (and small text makes this worse), or not want to pick up the book at all. Instant gratification's a bitch...
It's easier for me to focus on a task if it has a deadline, such as a paper that's due the next day.
1- Open 5 tabs ) Crusade forums, SWF Forums, Rpgmaker, Facebook and a extra one to search things)
2- Rpg Maker or Game Maker 7
3- Photoshop (To edit images and add fancy light effects) or paint (to create basic 3D Shapes)
4- Msn
5- Some Music

I do it, I'm not good at it, I find it stressful, and I get snippy/irritable when I am trying to split my attention between too many things.
I actually feel moderately *more* comfortable focusing on one thing at a time.
having two monitors is great for multitasking; and i want to get a third soon. i usually have irc open on one monitor and a browser (or whatever i'm working on) on the second. also i very often watch a video or something on one monitor while working on the other.
I mean, how many things do you do at once?
A lot. Usually three or four things at a time. IRC, internet browsing, music and then whatever project I'm working on (writing or graphics mostly).
How many windows do you open, and how many tabs on your browser?
I always have a bunch of folders open in my taskbar, usually as a reminder of the stuff I'm trying to get done. Light right now I have my folder for my writing stuff and my graphics stuff open, as well as a "books" folder because I wanted to get some reading done today.
I usually have two browser windows with a few tabs in each—one is usually a background "music" window with a tab for last fm (jazz or classic rock radio and a tab with rainymood.com. The other will have between 1 and 10 tabs, often various forums, wikipedia articles and facebook. It happens a lot that I'll be posting a reply in a forum and get sidetracked by irc which ends up being sidetracked on wikipedia etc etc and then I return to the forum reply and totally forget my point and end up not posting at all.
How frequently do you switch between tasks?
Too much. I'll do something on one thing and then do something else. I rarely focus on one thing for extended periods. When I do I make sure to close irc. Also I can get a lot of work done graphically when I'm watching a movie or tv show at the same time, it's how I do most of my spriting these days.
Are there any websites you refresh often?
Facebook and plenty of forums—probably gonna be RMN from now on.
Does the excessive multitasking prevent you from focusing on what you need to do?
Oh yeah.
Do you get the feeling of wasted time?
Yeah. I'll look at the clock and wonder where half the day went.
Do you try to control yourself?
Sometimes, not always. I'll usually give myself a major goal every day (in terms of sprite this much or write this many words, etc), and I can usually get it done even among getting sidetracked.
Do you feel any difficulty in keeping attention to a single thing (like writing a school paper) for prolonged periods?
Yes, absolutely. It has to do with the ease of the internet and knowledge. If I'm watching a tv show and they reference something I'll find myself pausing it to read about it on the internet (especially if I see an actor I recognize and can't QUITE place where I recognize him from). And then, naturally, I've spend two hours on wikipedia and wonder where the time went.

I mean, how many things do you do at once?
Roughly 4-5 things on good days. Internet, games, music, making something, tv show going on left side of the screen, browser on the right, etc. On slow days it'll be a combination of music/games, or music/internet.
How many windows do you open, and how many tabs on your browser?
I usually average around 3-4 windows, and around 10 tabs on my browser.
How frequently do you switch between tasks?
Anywhere between 5 minutes to an hour. So somewhat frequent but not spazzing out. Thanks to massive amount of ram and processing power, I can run high end games in the background and still feel no difference. Instant Alt-Tabbing is so sweet. Never gets old.
Are there any websites you refresh often?
RMN and Facebook, sometimes Stumble. However, I recently deactivated my facebook account and I legitimately feel amazing. I used to feel a complete lack of time and now that I took facebook out the equation, I feel more connected to my surroundings and my stress has actually decreased a lot. I always knew I hated facebook, but then finally thought "hey, why don't you leave if you hate it so much?" so I did. Everyone do it.
Does the excessive multitasking prevent you from focusing on what you need to do?
Not really. I'm fairly good at switching between things. Think of it as cooking with all the burners on the stove. You're still accomplishing all at once, but you're switching between them.
Do you get the feeling of wasted time?
See: previous mini-facebook rant. Other than that... not really. Even if I didn't really do anything productive, sometimes just relaxing and not really doing anything is a good way to spend time.
Do you try to control yourself?
Only the deactivation of facebook really. The rest I'm pretty good with.
Do you feel any difficulty in keeping attention to a single thing (like writing a school paper) for prolonged periods? Not from too much going on. Only time I have legitimate trouble is when I am going on hilariously low amounts of sleep. So I usually go sleep for a few hours, then come back and crank out the paper.
tl;dr facebook is a useless timesink and full of negativity, people should get off

author=calunioNot many! I try not to go beyond 2-3, simply because I know my focus will fragment and I'll be unable to get things done properly. Can't stand the feeling! I used to be one of those "go on IRC every day" types, but these days just thinking about it makes me feel tired. I keep YIM open 24/7, as it's how I talk to my girlfriend and I enjoy her company, while MSN is usually only open if I'm feeling lonely/chatty or want to chat with Archeia/have business to talk about with other people.
how many things do you do at once?
Beyond that, the combination is usually IM window + internet task or IM window + gam mak; things like that. I really like to "pair" what I do, and get agitated if I'm talking to more than 2 people while trying to do something.
author=calunioAh-hahaha reading some of the responses here, my mind is absolutely blown. A lot of my friends talk about "a lot of tabs" and in one case this means 100+(!); in my case "a lot of tabs" is anything over 10, if that. Right now I have 5, two of which are silly pics I've now closed because I was reminded they're still up. I think by now I've made a habit of just closing tabs as I finish with them/bookmarking pages to save for later.
How many windows do you open, and how many tabs on your browser?
How many windows I have open depends on what I'm doing. Usually 1, maybe 2 IM windows + whatever my other "task" was. I keep Firefox running in the background in case I want to check on something/look up stuff/have access to certain site-based resources, but if I'm doing something not involving the internet, it's usually minimized or just there for playing music.
author=calunioThis is tough for me to gauge. If I'm doing something on the internet, my attention is all over the place - I click one link and end up in a rabbit hole of other things. However if I don't have Firefox open, I usually just focus on one task + talking to someone and switch if something comes up/I get bored or finish.
How frequently do you switch between tasks?
author=calunioOnly RMN and VX.net, the latter a lot less frequently as of this year. I'm not really active in any other communities, despite having accounts in plenty of other places. "Communal activity" is something I've always found exhausting despite the fact I like doing it.
Are there any websites you refresh often?
author=calunioNot really; if I'm feeling "aimless" or procrastinating on something, I'll FIND ways not to focus, even if it's dumb stuff like picking a scab or shuffling papers. The problem lies with me not being focused in the first place, rather than whether or not I'm multitasking. Doing too much at once often gives me significant anxiety - I feel like I'm being overwhelmed with STUFF and don't like it one bit.
Does the excessive multitasking prevent you from focusing on what you need to do?
author=calunioOnly if whatever I'm doing doesn't go well. Then I get in a sour mood and think about all the other things I could have done instead. I think I get upset about it because I usually devote a lot of focus to specific tasks, so if that one thing doesn't pan out well I tend to feel like it was a waste.
Do you get the feeling of wasted time?
author=calunioYeah. I have a lot of hang-ups about productivity, so the thought of "wasting time and not getting anything finished" really motivates me to try avoiding it as much as I can.
Do you try to control yourself?
author=calunioAgain, only if I have the internet open. And I have trouble focusing for non-multitasking reasons. If I'm not interested in something, it will be a fight against myself to actually get it done! Let alone done in a timely manner.
Do you feel any difficulty in keeping attention to a single thing (like writing a school paper) for prolonged periods?
I usually have the opposite problem, where I focus on one thing to the exclusion of others. I feel guilty if I feel like I'm ignoring the people I'm talking to, but I feel frustrated if I can't sit down and focus on what I want to do, if it's something like work. If I'm just "vegging out" or taking a break, my attention is scattered all over the place and I am okay with that... but that's kind of the point of taking breaks.
Ah-hahaha typing all of this up just reminds me what an anxious person I am. OTL Edit: I am also incredibly slow. In the time I spent thinking about responding and stuff, two people replied.

This is a very interesting topic.
I mean, how many things do you do at once?
Well, maybe like 2 or 3 things at once.
How many windows do you open, and how many tabs on your browser?
I think usually, I open about 6-8 windows or so (most of them are folders anyway) and 7-8 tabs at once. Not forgetting the fact that I sometimes open more than one browser (2 at the most; mostly Chrome and Opera, and sometimes Firefox). I almost never open IE.
How frequently do you switch between tasks?
Hmm...when I kind of lose interest in a certain task and want to take a break from it? :)
Are there any websites you refresh often?
Probably Facebook, but of course I don't do that all the time, unless I'm really, really bored.
Does the excessive multitasking prevent you from focusing on what you need to do?
I don't do excessive multitasking. I do multitask, but not excessive.
Do you get the feeling of wasted time?
Occasionally, yes, but there are also times when I find time spent on the computer meaningful.
Do you try to control yourself?
Yes, of course.
Do you feel any difficulty in keeping attention to a single thing (like writing a school paper) for prolonged periods?
This, however, is a no. While I do get indulged in computer stuff quite often, when I do put my mind on something else other than computer, I make sure i finish it. Though I have to admit, I do take some sneaky breaks once in a while...

Also, I have noticed two things from this topic:
1. There is an overwhelming presence of Facebook.
2. Courtesy of PentagonBuddy, there is only one indirect case of anyone rivaling my Firefox tab count so far.
1. There is an overwhelming presence of Facebook.
this shouldn't be unexpected.
i mean maybe a year or two ago facebook wouldn't be as prevalent but today and being anti-facebook made sense sort of back then. but it's undeniably a major part of modern culture. it's massive. and i'm not one of those people who spend hours on it at a time—that blows my mind and I can't imagine that. i'll usually check it in the morning quick when I wake up and again before bed, and I have it set to send any direct messages to my phone (or chrome app). that's enough really, and it's not too distracting.
so many people—pretty much mostly everybody—have it and use it that it's a good way to stay in contact with people. some friends of mine who i barely know i've become a lot closer to because of facebook. there are FACEBOOK PEOPLE that i find absolutely repulsive but it's great for what it is.
and since the subject relates to Natook's post: yeah i get deleting it if it's taking up too much time. i used to hate it too (like I said, because of the PEOPLE on it moreso than the site itself, but they're easily enough avoided).
"facebook me" is such a common phrase and it's such a universal thing. people used to compare it to myspace, but it's nothing like it because of the mobile applications. now that facebook is pretty much on everybody's phone it's impossible to avoid—so why bother. it's just the way communication is going so embrace it.
How an offhand observation spawned a mini-rant I will never know.
My phone doesn't even know what apps are (let alone Facebook) since it's a Motorola RAZR, way before the advent ofiPhonessmartphones. Even turned down an offer from my dad to use an iPhone he wasn't using since I wasn't interested in much beyond simple phoning capabilities (plus, I fragging hate touchscreens).

I've had this exact problem since I was in 1st grade. I even remember my teacher calling me out on it; I had attempted writing a book of facts from A-Z and had finished three entries before giving up.
