FORUM MODS CAN BAN YOU FROM PLAYING GAMES? THANKS EA
Posts
So I heard from Shinan that if you get banned from the EA forums, you also get locked out of being able to play some of the latest EA games (that rely on having an EA account to activate/play it).
From RPS: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/11/14/ea-forum-bans-are-still-affecting-games/
I find this oddly ridiculous and hilarious at the same time.
Another case: http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/battlefield-3/1449225-banned-forum-crazycanuck-now-i-cant-play-bf3.html
So...apparently if you get a forum ban, you can also be prevented from playing their games. Wow.
This whole "gaming-as-a-service" thing has been rather offputting to me for years, and this latest example isn't helping. (Yeah yeah, apparently games have been a "service" for years, at least in theory, but only recently has it ever been put into practice).
On a related note, I hear that MW3 is getting torn to bits by the masses:
"While Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is receiving mostly high praise from the gaming press, the game is getting ripped apart by Metacritic users who've brought down its user score to an "unfavorable" 2.8 out of 10 rating."

UPDATE: http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-3 The score is now a dismal 1.8 lol @ the internet.
PS - On a completely unrelated note, an RMN ban will result in you unable to play any RPG Maker game ever again.
That above statement was false, obviously. But I guess you people are gullible...?

author=kentonaNo. No it will not, and malicious lies such as that can, and most likely will convince the more gullible mass newer rmntopian base into that false belief. Kentonimus Prime, you should know better.

I personally dislike the entire "all games must be connected to the net" model, as it seems to become more and more prevalent. Personally, let me go back to the days when games were like starcraft and Railroad Tycoon, where online play was a additional feature, not the "PRIMARY" requirement. Shame on you, Main stream, shame on you.
HA that is pretty funny, this is what I hate when game companies are releasing the same game with new weapons and map packs.
Brilliant move EA. This will surely secure Origin as a competitive product compared to all those other digital distribution services! Oh and show that a paid product is better than just pirating it. Surely this will improve your standing in the PC gaming world!
Fuck you EA. If ME3 PC is only available by Origin then I guess I'll have to pass on it.

LOL I've never seen such a gap between user scores and critic scores as I have with Modern Warfare 3.
Is that 1.8 on MW3 due to a legitimately shitty game? Or is it due to some backlash not directly related to the game?
Forgive me if the answer should be obvious, I don't have the game and considering I've heard nothing but good things about it (to the point of overhype?) I'm left wondering what that rating really means.

If it is due to a legitimately shitty game, then the review industry has fully and entirely terminal cancer, because predictably all reviews are 9/10. I know that review scores are padded, but I don't think they're padded anywhere near that much.
I think it's more likely some kind of gaming the system by anti-fanboys of one stripe or another.
It's probably a game that's around 7/10, with game magazine reviews padding it two points higher for ad revenue reasons, and with anti-fanboys dumping it five to six points out of vitriolic spite.
Man metacritic is a worthless site.

Yeah me too honestly. I didn't buy the game, but I have played and seen the game being played fairly often, and uh, it's certainly not unplayably bad by any means...???
This is one good reason why you do not fully trust ratings and reviews. Bottom line: watch trailers, look at screenshots etc and judge for yourself by playing the games that you have interest in.

This is the best advice on the planet and everyone should consider taking this route.

It's this, more or less. The critics' reviews are definitely inflated, judging but what I have heard and seen so far (and 7/10 seems accurate to me), and when this story broke, there were 476 reviews with an average score of 2.8 - and from what I heard, THAT was actually rather poignant backlash against "more of the same" from MW3. There were some heartfelt and accurate user reviews in there. And then the story broke. And then the game's director tweeted that "Dudes, help us out! The user score is tanking!" (which he later deleted). And all of the sudden there were 3500 user reviews and a score of 1.8. so THAT second wave was definitely out of vitriolic spite + trolling.
Also, what is this Origin stuff? I haven't bought a game that was not a DS game (or bargain bin game) in years.
The game definitely doesn't deserve anything under a 6-7 but it's pretty much the same old game being milked. The gamespot user reviews seem fairly accurate but I've only seem videos and haven't played the game as of yet.
Origin is EA's digital distribution service like Steam. You log onto your Origin account, browse their game catalog, buy one, download it, and run it through Origin. Without Origin you can't run the game and now that getting banned on EA's forums means getting banned from your Origin account it means you can't access the games you purchased with it.
In short it's one of the fears people have with Steam coming to life with Origin and more proof GOG has the best digital distribution system (buying a game lets you download the installer for a DRM free game. I have all my GOG game installer on my HD and I don't have to log on to install or play them but if my HD died I could go and redownload them).

I think the 1.8 is because of 4Chan or the Internet in general hating the most money making game. In the same way Justin Bieber will still make a billion dollars and still be hated by everyone. The same way Transofmrers will be hated yet make a ton of money at the box office and DVD sales. The same way the wrestler John Cena will be hated yet still sell $20 million dollars in T-shirts alone per year.
Internet hates things common people love.

author=ShortStarNot in this case. The user ratings for other big name releases are more in line with the critics metascore. For example, http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/battlefield-3 the user score is 7.5, Skyrim http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim 8.5, etc..

Even Sonic Generations http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/sonic-generations is 8.6, and it's fucking Sonic! Everybody loves to hate on Sonic!
There is something more going on than just "the internets hates popular things lol" in MW3's case.

Gamersgate does this too. Though their game selection is slightly more recent. (and not for all games because... well... their game selection is slightly more recent)
