Hey guys, let's talk about cool indie villains! You don't have to follow my format exactly, but an image and link would be badass. We've had topics like this before I'm pretty sure, but a quick search didn't pull anything recent up. So, let's gogogo!

Remember to mark spoilers appropriately, and that not all examples have to be from RPGs.

***

Augustus (Last Scenario)
"Well, that was a stupid move. But then, you never were very bright, were you?"

Augustus is a major villain for the first half of Last Scenario and a true magnificent bastard. His motives are based in his resentment toward others who achieve power due to birth or marriage while he is a self-made man; he is incredibly American in this sense. He uses the power and contacts that he has formed to begin usurping more political power, but eventually his own scheming comes full circle.

He is interesting as an RPG villain because he is involved with the party and the plot as a whole, but is also surprisingly distant; you see a lot of him, but it's a "meanwhile, at the castle..." situation. You never fight him, only his subordinates, and you are not the one to kill him. He is both a frustrating and incredible villain.
Dangit Craze you already stole the best. Augustus owns so hard in Last Scenario after he kicks the bucket the game just starts to go downhill. Castor isn't nearly as interesting as Augustus.

As villains Exit Fate's cast wasn't too interesting. Most were meh'ish, except Demon Sick and Trevor. And that's because one scene where they chase you Daniel is running so fucking hard and S&T are just basically float/flying behind him laughing their heads off. It just looks so goofy.

The Fucking Fire from Station 37 is pretty cool. It's such an asshole, you should play it to see how much of a jerk it is! Even just play the first level to get an experience.
Alright so maybe the fire isn't who I'm talking about

From here I'm hitting blanks. I haven't found many villains from indie games to be cool/interesting/etc., not even Balrog from Cave Story. If the thread flounders maybe I'll post some not-popular-games with cool villains. Or maybe if I remember/find one.

I don't know if that's a character from something or you actually mean Sailerius from RMN.

I don't watch enough animes (??)

Gonna have to shout out to The Doctor from Cave Story here, actually.

Dude comes from the stock of classic goofy mad scientist archetypes, but he has such an intimidating presence the few times he's on screen, and causes enough horrible things to happen right in front of you, that he was the first villain in a long, long time I was really anxious to beat up, because he had pissed off me, as a player.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Man, looking through my RPG Maker library, most of these games either don't have any characterization for their villains, don't have villains at all, are fan games, or I never finished the game.

Oh, wait, here's one. A good one, too.

Alter AILA (the original, as I haven't played the later ones) is one game where I really appreciated the villains: they were the party members you didn't choose to join. Because of that, they, obviously, had as much characterization, motivation and depth as any of your party members. Because that's who they were.

The game gives you a chance to meet everyone, then gives you a choice near the beginning of one of three groups to join, and then lets you switch sides once later if you want. Of the two groups you don't join, one is forced by the situation to be opposed to you and the other is mortally opposed to you at your core. But every character in the game is likable and legitimately very sympathetic (except for Red the raging douchebag) and it is actually pretty painful to fight them. They are fighting for what they believe in, and they're not wrong - they're just incompatible with your chosen method of survival. And if you'd merely hesitated for a moment earlier in the game, you would literally be fighting alongside them instead of killing them... and helping to kill the people you're fighting alongside right now.
Right, who would forget Shadar?

Well, he's not really my favorite for me, though he is definitely a great villain. My favorite indie villain actually comes from the game that I'm currently translating, but since it's not complete yet, it won't make much sense to post that villain just yet. And it would actually be a major spoiler to post that villain anyway.

Unfortunately, of all indie RPGs I've played so far, the villains (except the ones in Last Scenario, Exit Fate and of course, the game mentioned above) are either pretty generic, not particularly interesting, not enough depth or just the big, bad bosses. Few of them actually catch my attention.

Miliard D'courerd - Las memorias de Molian (Molian's Memoirs)

-Spoilers ahead-
Miliard (Guy at the top) is an aristocrat, son of Demian D'courerd (Old man in the middle), a mercenary contractor. But after the murder of the latter, Miliard seeks the assistance of Molian (Long-haired dude), one of his father's best men and personal protegee, to help him find his father's killer and avenge his death.

The game doesn't make a particular attempt at hiding that Miliard is potentially the the bad guy, even Molian suspects him from the start, but what makes it all interesting is to witness how they interact throughout the game. At first Miliard is very supportive, and Molian complains with his orders to clear out his suspicions and find out more about the truth. Later he gets more confident and starts to assert his superiority over Molian, who he sees as a mere criminal. Later, after he sees his scheme to take over his father's state falling apart, he slips and becomes a raging maniac whose last desire is to take with him the one person his father cared more for than his own son...

This game is one of the best the Spanish rm scene has to offer, and hopefully it will get translated to English one day, but as long as it remains in Spanish I'm sure you're not going to run looking for a download, and besides, the game is currently going trough a major overhaul and the story may change drastically, so nevermind the spoilers, really. =P

I have an answer to this topic, by the way, just too lazy to furnish an image and link. I know, I suck.

Dr. Fetus (From Super Meat Boy!)

Granted, this is a villain in a platformer, which means his storyline and motivation is about as well-developed as a fat turtle, but his personality - he's a dick - is amazingly well enforced throughout the game. When you beat a level, he punches your girlfriend. When you beat a world, he reacts like a baby, punches you in the face, and then runs off with your girlfriend again. His ferocity is unmatched. You can't help but love him.

A super-simple villain with super-simple motivations, and yet he remains amazingly memorable. I dig it.

(P.S. I had a link to the website, but they just finished a "draw the developers nude" contest and... well, you can google Super Meat Boy if you want)

I can't seem to come up with any indie villain atm. Pretty much any villain is fine for me as long it is not a cliché villain of darkness who is either the hero's father, brother or just related to him through weird plot shit and wants to destroy the universe for no apparent reason.
As for the ones who want to take the world over, well, makes more sense but still blah.
Taking over a country/world works better in political RPGs IMO.
What about villain's from games that literally aren't even out yet, I have a villain that I would like to introduce that I have to use this thread for...

I don't really like RPG villains. They're usually some really lameass anime guy who wants to destroy the world. Easy to make fun of, but really not interesting.
Doho but sephiroth has a long sword so powerful no one else can wield and he becomes a god Dohohoho fapfapfap

See, that's why I liked Kefka. Yea, he was cliche and wanted to destroy the world and became a god and all that, but at least he didn't half-ass some lame story about his mom, he was just like "Man maybe it'd be fun to commit genocide today" and then he did it.

Yeah. Except that this thread isn't about 'Commercial' villains and it's not limited only to 'Rpg' ones either, so... xP
