EXAMPLES OF GOOD AND BAD MAPPING IN RPG MAKER 2003?

Hey, guys...

Since I've never actually made an RPG in RPG Maker 2003, I think I'll try. But, before I try, I'd like some advice/screenshots to help avoid bad mapping. I don't want people saying "MY FREAKING GOD DAMN EYES!" at my maps, so...

Edit:Stupid spelling error. Don't blame me, I posted it on the 3DS Internet Browser...

I would visit the screenshot topics we have over in Game Discussion & Development, they always have good reference material for what makes good and bad maps.

Beyond that, download the myriad of games we have available here and play them for reference. Looking at what other people have done is a good way to learn new methods and get new ideas.
I'm not bragging (honest!), but if you check out my upcoming game: Amulet of Fate here on rpgmaker.net. I haven't really gotten a single bad comment from anybody about my screenshots or how I map. There were some itty nitpick comments, but those are typically person-centric and personal preferences. So I'd suggest to look at those for some decent mapping. So really, I'm only posting this because of not receiving a single negative comment about them. Otherwise, I'd have no ground to stand on with this without that proof. But good luck with your rm2k3 game, ultimately make it how you want it to be. Your fans will follow you. Don't try to get discouraged by other games or criticism, do what YOU want and release what you are most comfortable with, not what others say and you'll do just fine.

Let's try to suggest games with maps that we did not make - there are plenty on the site after all ;) But it's good to be proud of your work, Darkflamewolf - your mapping is certainly not bad good great, and sometimes outstanding.

On second thought, brag about your use of mac and blue - it's textbook and I'd say superior to mine :D

Liberty and Corfaisus do great work with the 2k3 RTP (as do a few others whose names escape me).
Shame on you, DK! You forgot to mention Kentona!

Check out Hero's Realm - it's a game on site with very good (if simple) RTP mapping and is complete, too. There are a lot of games on the site with good mapping. What kind of graphics were you looking at?

The graphic pack that comes with RPG Makers is called RTP (Run Time Package) in case you were wondering what the hell we were talking about.

*We should have the ability to add graphic tags to games - RTP, Mack, Rips, Mixture, Custom, other.*
Now please don't take this the wrong way, always do your best, but yeah. Don't over stress your self on trying to become "The Best Mapper Ever" I have noticed a lot of games where in my opinion the maps were fine, real nice. However, they were obsessed for some reason with trying to make it better when they really didn't need to. I see a lot of projects never get completed for that very reason. Now that being said, don't make crap maps on purpose, do your best. Just don't make that your soul focus. I would like to think that story holds a slight edge over mapping.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

It's easy to show you examples of good mapping, but harder to show you examples of how to take bad mapping and make it good.

Oh hey, look, a mapping tutorial was just submitted today. Check it out.
Well if you need an example of bad RTP mapping, try Aaron's Revenge. It's not on this site because it's a pretty terrible game and nobody probably knows about it, so:

An example of good RTP mapping is obviously Hero's Realm.

Also another example of bad mapping is Yellow: Protector of the Sun. Although at the moment I don't know where to find it. The game itself isn't so bad, it's got some good humor and very random scenes. But the mapping was pretty terrible.
Thanks to everyone who responded to this thread. Now I know some tips for mapping. If the entire community is this nice, then this'll be a nice place.
