WAR ON POLITICS
Posts
Seriously!? the "Are you a libertarian" thread got closed because some user didn't like it? Awww come on guys... anyways, forget about it, I'm just here to ask about what's the stance of members here on the whole Political threads... should they be allowed? is this something anyone would be interested in discussing about or should RMN just forget about these political stuff and just stick to games?
I think that all sorts of topics should be allowed in the General discussion area, such as politics, religion and so on... and there should be enough freedom to post links / images / videos on them to back up our points when discussing them. I'm not going to object if this is something that gets censored from now on. Just my two cents XD

I agree with that, first because we're a bunch of people here who all live in this world and are affected by it, so it's just natural some would like to talk about it and share, second because I, personally, find these topics very interesting, exchange of ideas, every one one coming from different backgrouds, with different experiences, learning to know each other just a tiny bit , third because any activity , particularly on the creative side, is fed of thode events and everthing going on around us, but equally fed by the general attitude of the community it evolves, for a great part,in, its openmindedness and friendliness or otherwise. I'd add that some of us have a lot to learn from and bring to the others on all those subjects.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

They really only result in animosity. Teaching and learning aren't things that happen when discussing politics and religion.
I don't approve banning such topics from being discussed, but locking them when they get stupid and people start flaming each-other is fine. A thread about game design probably would have been locked at a much lower threshold.

I agree with LockeZ. In my experience, such topics usually do turn ugly, though it is always nice to give people the benefit of the doubt and try to discuss things reasonably first.

Yeah, but why do they turn ugly? because some people just can't behave! :P

What sheer nonsense.
So we, as human beings, should simply avoid talking about the issues that affect us? Complete bullshit. If you're scared of the serious topics and want to keep to the abstract game design theory discussions where you're at your best, then do so. There are kiddie tables and adult tables at family get-togethers. There's no reason the same can't apply here.
This is a site full of artists. One of our greatest intangible assets is our critical thought process and analytical abilities. Serious topics, the real world topics that require research, insight and debate, are valuable to all of our individual development.

Stop being a baby, dude. This community only has to gain when we stop talking about video games all the time. This is the real world, dude. Bottlenecking discussion into nice little 'everybody say nice things and get along' is nonsense, and discouraging discussion about anything but games and making games because of the possibility that someone might get butthurt is also inane.
I have learned a great deal simply from reading posts, topics, and discussion about hard hitting real life shit, and the notion of trying to censor it or discourage it is saddening. If you can't handle discussions about real stuff, go to Gaia Online or something, and stay there.
Animosity is to be expected. Other than explicit provoking and name-calling, no reason to close threads about it.
People, including me, including you, go into political discussions with a barrier up. We have our own personal understanding of the world and how it works. That level of understanding can very greatly based on age, life experience, social circles, career, class, etc. If someone challenges that understanding, it challenges that barrier. The actual objective truth seems to pale in comparison to that pride. Thus, teaching and learning don't happen on the spot.
However, I believe that discussion is actually productive, because peoples minds DO change. No one will ever admit it, but they do. You can chip away at someone's world view over time. Especially if that person is 15 years old. They will likely have a lot to learn as they experience the world.

Did you guys read the whole 4 sentences that Lockez wrote?
I don't really see why anyone would disagree about the part in bold to be honest.

Sure. But the Libertarian thread never got that far. In fact, it was very civil for a politics thread :o
Anyway, glad to see it reopened. I hope this sort of freedom to converse on major issues can be continued in the future.

While I appreciate the vote of confidence, I am not an ultra-liberal American hegemonist. I am a socially liberal fiscally conservative believer in the rule of law and peace through strength. It's a fairly common set of values.
Principals of basic human freedom and liberty will always win the intellectual debate. I'm not afraid of that. The reason we often don't is because most of the time, we don't control (manipulate) the language, and thus, we lose the marketing war as it is much easier to sway the whimsical hearts of people by appealing to their emotions, something the authoritarian ultra-left does extremely well.
It was wrong of me to close that topic prematurely, and I understand that the inclusion and moderation of these threads is a split matter. I'm going to cut out the rambling and keep this post simple: once we have something concrete, we'll post it in the rules sticky.
