IGNORING IGNORANCE: UM, WHAT.
Posts
The Ignore feature has been on forums since "Sign My Guestbook" became obsolete. It only skewers your own perspective, and usually the type of person to put it to use isn't around for very long anyway (childish/immature).
There is a problem with the placement though. When I click Craze's name because I want to see what projects he's involved in, I don't want to scroll down too many pixels and accidently block the son'bitch.
edit : What is it with me and starting new pages? Maybe if I ignore someone, it'll place me elsewhere.....

author=chanaauthor=King ArthurNot at all....!
As I see it, this topic is nothing but over-exaggeration, fear-mongering, and needless incitation of drama.
The idea of an ignore feature upsets me, sincerely, and seems so contradictory with the one of community.
If I'm going to ignore someone, I'm going to ignore them regardless of whether the forums have such a function. I simply cannot fathom why anyone is making a huge deal out of this.
I ask again: What exactly is the problem?

Now this I can agree that it is a problem. The Ignore option should be in a location that is both accessible and not prone to erroneous clicking.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I'm confused, why are there no posts at all in this topic?
The difference is : when a person is ignored but not technically, i.e. not through the feature, that person sees he's ignored and deals with it one way or another, as for the ignoring person, he sees that first one's avatar, post, will eventually read his post, then, and only in this instance, decides to ignore it, all this is dealing with human relationships, but having a feature that systematically, litterally erases some one's existence (posts) from the forums is quite something else.

A message or list or something telling the person being ignored that they're being ignored would seriously be super useful and would drastically cut down on stupidity.
The basic idea of an ignore feature has potential problems, but is so widespread in online communication that I think everyone is used to them. It's not a feature I appreciate having, but if other people want it then whatever.

What difference is there to the one being ignored whether I ignore them via the Ignore function or not? The one ignored isn't going to get a reply either way.
as for the ignoring person, he sees that first one's avatar, post, will eventually read his post, then, and only in this instance, decides to ignore it
Or I could just skip over the entire post, not reading it, upon seeing the avatar or some other form of similar identification.

None of the posts are being erased. You won't see my posts if you chose to block them, but others who haven't blocked me can still read them.
Enough over-exaggeration. Enough fear-mongering. None of the flimsy points being brought up hold any water in regards to taking the Ignore function out.

I don't think anyone is implying that an ignore command is going to cause impending doom or that these are code red alpha level threats to the integrity of our community, just that it's kind of weird and occasionally inconvenient, and they don't really see the good side.

But our view of things are so different on this, that it's actually, apparently useless to discuss.
He knows he's being ignored.
It's pretty obvious you're being ignored when you don't receive a reply after so many posts, bro.
"upon seeing the avatar or some other form of similar identification."
Doesn't change the fact I won't read the post, bro.
For the one who ignores, yes.
I have every right to "erase" posts from view, bro.
author=KingArthurso you can just see someone's avatar and think 'im gonna ignore this tosser's post man, can't stand this guy!' and then just skip the post even if it affects what people have posted later on?

mate that's bs i bet you at least read it before thinking you're gonna ignore the comment/not reciprocate.

This isn't a question of whether it's bullshit or not, the point is that I can do that with or without an Ignore function. What is so difficult to understand about this very simple concept?

ok, bro, no use starting a war on a difference of opinion, bro, take it easy, bro.
West side story, bro!

It is you who seems to have a difficulty understanding what's the problem here, KA; Everybody else seems to be on the same page.
I guess we all have seen all kinds of misunderstandings arising from the implementation of features like this. Someone mentioned facebook, I've seen it fairly often on dA too, and I guess it's all over the internet by now on this day and age of lazy/insufficient moderation. But as much as I love drama sometimes, we don't need that kind of drama here. It's useless and will further distract us from our objectives.
Maybe someone suggested it to Ankylo, or maybe he thought it would be useful; And I appreciate that he dedicates so much of his time to this site in exchange of nothing... But I'm sorry, I just don't see any good coming out of this in the long run. - Just my two cents.

I guess I'm the only one who sees the hypocrisy in bringing up a problem that never existed in the first place, then.
Here's my rough take on this whole deal: We can all choose to ignore each other whether we have an Ignore function or not: It doesn't take a "Ignore <Person>" button to ignore someone. Why is this suddenly a community-splitting problem that merits a topic when there have been absolutely no issues pertaining to the matter at hand? Why is everyone riled up about a feature that is entirely optional and that, in effect, changes absolutely nothing?
Personally, I don't see the ~controversy~ behind having an ignore function. 90% of forums have one. I mean, me myself, I'll probably never use it, but if someone does choose to use it, I'm sure it'll be for a good reason. I doubt people will just click ignore whenever they get into a disagreement with someone.

Well you know what I think would be best? having a block user function such as in Facebook, in which if say Kentona blocks Craze, Kentona nor Craze can see each others post nor they can do private messages / add as a friend. :P
And if such function can't be implemented, do something fun like "like / dislike" on each post, and make a little button that says the name of the users who dislike that post, so people can have an idea... alright, I know I'm like trying to turn this place into Facebook-feel-alike, but you can't deny there are many little features like that on FB that make online activity understanding so much easier. :D
EDIT:
Well, maybe not say who likes / dislikes the post, to avoid fights, but yeah, not a bad idea.
EDIT 2:
Okay... I have another suggestion... be able to block someone's avatar. I just saw one that made me throw up a little bit in my mouth... really, I'm just being honest here. :x
I think there should be an option in the site that allows me to click "hide this user's avatar" without having to hide everyone's avatar (which I really don't want). Just my thoughts now that we're talking about the ignoring function here.

This isn't a social networking site, it's a game developers site. Turning it into facebook should be the last thing that happens. Putting so much focus on the forums is close enough.
I have no strong opinion about the ignore feature. I just don't care and I won't be using it.
KingArthur does have a point, delivered with almost obscene aggression xD, but not everyone acts the same way. Some people are incapable of the self discipline required to manually ignore a person. You can't really say it's a non-issue because of how you think.
The other extreme is that this site, for some users who start to mass ignore, will become their own personal RMN where they only discuss things with their friends. I doubt it would ever come to that, but the possibility is there when it doesn't need to be. Some people want a free and opensocietycommunity and are prepared to discuss things before they happen.
Everyone so far has mentioned how this would affect forum discussions, but what about gamepages? If you ignore someone and they don't know it, they might have posted some nice comments or useful feedback on your page and you'd never know. That's probably the worst thing that could happen with this feature. Unless this doesn't apply to gamepages?
*edit: Let's not forget about events and contests.
I would like to hear the reason ignore was implemented.

Your avatar is obnoxious. *ignores* XD
jk man
No, but really man...
lol?
No, but in all seriousness... I think that the ignore function should be to prevent PM harrassment and making posts not visible in the forums, anything that has to do with game pages and such will just break the system.
