The world is doomed... by the Mysterummy!

Hello players!
Once again I'm back with an old rpgmaker 2003 game from the past, Legend of the Mysterummy, but this time the game isn't really old since it was done by AnnTenna (also author of a very cool and complete Phantasy Star fangame made with rpgmaker!) in 2020, and unfortunately it exists only as a small demo that includes a reduced cast and limited exploration. I even tried to find a more recent version (technically this was translated from russian SO there may be an original version, not available in english of course!), and I was able to find the itch.io site for this game, unfortunately the version you will find there is exactly the same that you have on rpgmaker.net, so no complete game, EVEN IF it's still possible to reach an ending. Actually there are many possible different endings! But let's start this story from the beginning...

What? Sailor Moon is in this game? And judging from her words Samuel "Sammy" Tsukino is here too!!!

We start the game playing as Trenz, a boy whose destiny was to receive the Mysterummy. Oh yes, we immediately start with our... hero... getting this item from his parents that leave him alone and disappear. What's this item? Good question, apparently this is a totally useless thing (not a weapon/armor/amulet) that every monster on the land wants and looks like that it will be really bad if it falls in the wrong hands. BUT Trenz DOES NOT WANT to spend his life holding that thing, so he will try to get rid of it...

And this is where the game begins: we, as Trenz, will have to decide our next steps: will we explore daddy's basement? Will we travel the world and try to find a place where he can hide or dispose of the cursed thing, or will we bring it inside Sinister Castle, a clearly evil place, in order to send all the evil monsters that crave for the Mysterummy to face Lord Sinister von Evildoer? Uhm. I'd rather stay at home (like Trenz's parents did!), to be honest...

Battling monsters and beasts is something I expected from this game! Battles are pretty frequent... but only inside few dangerous locations!

Legend of the Mysterummy can be defined as an open world rpg: the game has a day-and-night cycle where maps change depending on the time of the day, shops are in fact closed at night and the various characters change their locations depending on the time of the day. Pity that the only way to make the time pass quickly is resting, but it's ok, I mean this is a demo after all.

Now, you can explore your village and the nearby lands to find subquest, allies, loot and items, like the magical flying broom (that still NOT AS GOOD as an airship since you cannot fly over mountains or the ocean). This demo also includes four (out of 7 of the complete game) playable characters, like the stubborn village guard Harry (that looks like Trenz's color swapped armored clone!) or the timid Kate, a healer and houskeeper, and they will influence the progress of the story and some of the events, so having them or not in the party can effectively change some parts. Moreover their attacks in battles are voiced! Nice, and pretty uncommon thing!

Uhm... maybe coming here was not a good idea after all!

Since I mentioned the battles, let's see how combat works: as usual we have normal attacks and special attacks that cost mana points, each character can also equip different weapons and armors, and while many can be bought, the best items are found in dungeons. Now the game has just three dungeons with random encounters, and they're progressively difficult, the last one (that's pretty challenging and long) has also a boss battle I wasn't able to win... YET! Anyway I already found a couple of endings even if they were not so good for the world! I should probably replay the game from the beginning someday. The good thing is that you can save anytime, anywhere!
Besides combat there are also few puzzles and minigames, like a sort of "jumping maze" where falling means to end inside a more traditional maze with loot but also LOTS of annoying random battles (the rate is pretty high, luckily outside the dungeons you will be almost totally safe!).

Legend of the Mysterummy is visually a pretty game: there are few RTPs, lots of edits, some rips and even custom made assets by AnnTenna, and the result is pretty good even if some differences of style and colouring are evident (for example look at the pictures here: Sailor Moon's faceset, Kate's battler, etc). Mapping is for the most part pretty good (there are some very bizarre maps btw), even if the Sinister Castle with its huge empty rooms and frequent encounters is a place that many players will surely hate. Music isn't original but it's good and I liked the voiced attacks that I mentioned before!

Fly around the world riding a magical broom! But no Quidditch included!

Final Verdict
Legend of the Mysterummy is a pretty good adventure game, and despite the limitetions for being a demo I'm pretty sure it's possible to get a nice ending... well maybe, since I only got bad ones, and no, I'm not referring to the game overs with Trenz being defeated! In any case there are some parts that could have been explanded with some more choices, for example about the boy stranded in the forbidden plains or other parts that could have been explanded. On the other hand I still haven't 100% explored the game since I had to live with the consequences of some choices done right at the beginning of the game, so I've probably to restart and do another playthrough (also to recruit the last playable character of the demo!).
In the end this is still a pretty good game even if in its demo status, I'm not a big fan of the random encounter battles or the big dungeons with overly large rooms (only one, to be honest!) but all the rest was good! Recommended if you like rm2k3 classic games!
