Release strategy revealed!

Hi guys! Long time no type.

I'm here today to announce my plan for releasing Rhukaat II. I've decided to release the game in increments - meaning that since the game is divided into 5 acts, I'll release a version of the game once each act is done. Each release will span the very beginning of the game up until the end of whatever the most recently finished act is. I'm hoping that save games will follow a plug-and-play model in terms of version updating since nothing else will change from version to version with regards to core mechanics, but I'm not sure.

My reasoning for this model of release is that since progress long-term has been slow, I'd rather have releases more often to keep interest in the final product up, rather than stretch it over a longer period of time and get less done. Plus, I think this would be a good motivator for me to actually hunker down and work more seriously on it.

I'd love to hear any feedback that you guys have on this, and as always, I appreciate the support. Thanks for reading!

Status Update - Soundtrack & Rebalancing

Hello followers,

Progress on Rhukaat II has been a bit slow for the past couple of months. Real life decided to make its presence known; I'm sure most of you can relate. However, I'm finally getting back into it so I'd like to let everyone know what I've been up to with regards to the game.

First, I've finished the entire soundtrack for the game. I have a very concrete plan of how I want the game to progress and what I'll be designing, and so I decided that it would be easier to have the entire soundtrack ready to go so that I don't have to stunt production any more than I already have. On that note, I may decide to release a remastered version of the soundtrack in its entirety - feel free to share your thoughts if that would be something you think you may be interested in.

Second, I've been in the process of completely reorganizing and rebalancing the vast majority of the game's equippable items - weapons, armor, and accessories. Potion-type items and quest-related items have not been changed. Many weapons, armors and accessories have had their parameters changed, some have been removed altogether, and many new ones have been added. This is due to the fact that I felt the game needed overall rebalancing, especially since I had made tweaks to the party characters' stats, and also finally established a clear plan for what the course of the game will be. This overall process of rebalancing is not done yet, but progress has been very fast and I'm confident that I'll be totally finished with it very soon.

Because of all of this background work, progress on the actual game has been a bit light. However, once I finish what I'm currently working on with regards to the database and such, I can finally resume work on the game. For a picture of where I am, the game itself will be split into five acts... I'm currently about halfway to three-quarters done with act two.

As always, I appreciate everyone's support and interest in this project, even if it's fleeting. I hope to have some more positive news in the near future.

Rhukaat II - Demo 2013 Released!

Rhukaat II: Demo 2013 has been released!

Demo 2013 is the latest, most up-to-date version of Rhukaat II; this is the absolute closest to what the final product will look and play like when the game is finished, barring things like very minor tweaks and bug fixes. As such, this is probably the final demo that I will release for Rhukaat II. Demo 2013 is available for download in the downloads section of the Rhukaat II page.

I am extremely grateful for the support I've gotten thus far, and I hope you all continue to watch for progress in the future. Thanks for reading and I hope you have fun with the new demo! :D

What's new in Demo 2013?
  • A completely new tileset, using a mix of tiles by Mack and Celianna.
  • Several completely redesigned maps.
  • A 100% new, all-original MIDI soundtrack composed by me, Shaboba.
  • Stat/balance tweaks for player characters, monsters, bosses, skills and items.
  • Many bugfixes.
  • Subtly increased difficulty overall.
  • 2-3 hours of gameplay.

Brief Hiatus

So, production on Rhukaat II has gone on a hiatus because real-world priorities are taking up most of my attention for the time being. Also, working on the game has become more work than fun and I feel like I need a little break to recharge my batteries, so to speak. However, this will not be one of those never-ending hiatuses, as I totally intend to resume work on this game when time allows. I care about it too much and have worked too long on it to let it become yet another unfinished project. Anyway, as always, thanks for your support and I hope you keep watching for new progress.

Okay, so the issue has been resolved and a new - fully functioning - download is now available for Updated Demo 2. There is no installer this time; just extract the folder anywhere to your computer and play. Again, sorry for the inconvenience, but now the matter is resolved.

The Current State of Rhukaat II and What The Future Holds

Hi all,

I know my presence here has been scarce over the past several months or so, but for anyone who is still paying attention to Rhukaat II, I have updates.

First off, I want to say that Rhukaat II is still very much in production. The game is between 40%-50% done, I'd say... closer to 40% than 50%. The game's length right now is around four hours. But it's plugging right along. Things like everyday life and my very short attention span keep me from giving Rhukaat II the attention it probably deserves. However, the bottom line is that I have not lost interest, I fully intend to finish this game and it is by no means on any kind of backburner. Granted, I can virtually guarantee that progress will be on the slow side - which is why I haven't and probably never will set a specific release date - but there has been and will continue to be concrete progress nonetheless.

Second, and I realize it may be a bit soon to think about this, but when I finish Rhukaat II, I've been floating the idea of releasing a modified "Hard Mode" version of the game, since I've been hearing from testers that it's a bit on the easy side but making it overall harder would be a big task this far in development and I really don't want to do that. So, I figure a good solution would be to release a separate version of the game with the overall difficulty raised significantly. I'd love to get people's thoughts on this.

Third, I may possibly decide to release a new demo since, frankly, the current public demo is pretty obsolete now as far as gameplay is concerned. If I did release a new demo it would be about 3-and-a-half to 4 hours long, and it would consist of pretty much the whole game so far. Feedback on that idea would be much appreciated.

Finally, I could actually use some more beta testers, so if anyone is interested don't hesitate to get in contact with me and we'll talk about it.

I appreciate the fact that people are still interested in this game - there's nothing quite so disheartening as when you work so hard on something and nobody is paying attention. But anyway, that's all. I just wanted to provide those updates, and hopefully get some feedback in return. Have a nice day.

Miscellaneous

Rhukaat II is officially back in production!

So I managed to recover Rhukaat II entirely, and this means I will be able to resume work on it! I do realize that the current demo DL link is broken; I plan to fix this in due time - like, within the next couple of days probably. Anyway, I just wanted to give that update for anyone who's still paying attention. I will not be releasing anymore demos for Rhukaat II, nor will I make public any more news regarding its production... I would like to work on this game in private and independently, away from the community. I will release it here when I finish it; however, I have no idea when this will be. But now that I can work on it again, hopefully some serious progress will be made.
