Sacred Reviews: Yummy Breakfast

Intro

I'll admit reaching 300 words on "Yummy Breakfast" might be a bit of a challenge. This short, comedic, adventure game about eating breakfast was developed by Healy using RPG Maker 2003 and takes around 5 to 8 minutes to complete. And in that time frame the game only managed to leave me conflicted on how to feel about it as an overall package, but hopefully writing this review will let me come to a final conclusion on this one.

Story
Summary

You play as Susan whose just starting off her day with a cup of tea like the Spiffing Brit. So she better have made a good old cup of Yorkshire Tea if she knows what's good for her. At any rate the natural follow up to tea is yummy pancakes. Unfortunately this doesn't satisfy Susan's hunger so she continues to eat until we learn the horrible truth at the heart of this game.

Ending Spoiler

Comedy

The comedic aspect of this game is supposed to come from the big reveal at the end of the game. Though if this reveal is funny is a bit up in the air. I sort of guessed where the story was going before it happened so the shock value just wasn't there. And I'm not in the best mood for the twist that is provided with the ending of "Yummy Breakfast".

Greatest Strength/Weakness

Oddly enough the final joke at the end of this game is both it's greatest strength and it's greatest weakness. After all, if the ending scene doesn't get you to laugh then this project just devolves into a short visual novel where very little actually happens. So much so that it makes the game feel kind of pointless since it means you just spent several minutes helping a character eat. At least if she was a virtual pet like a Chao this would have more meaning.

After all, I spent hours raising one of my chao up to max stats for Sonic Adventure. Though I could never get it to turn into an adult for some reason.

Gameplay

The game consists of being told to interact with certain objects and doing so in order to advance the story. That's really all there is to it. There isn't any fancy puzzles to slow you down by making you spend time and energy on finding the right solution. Nor are there any enemies to deal with. You simply move around and interact with the specified object. whether this be a fridge or a chicken.

Graphics and Sound

The game uses a combination of RTP assets and custom assets that are both original and purchased. This has resulted in a game that does feel a bit unique, but the limited number of rooms to explore means this project is a bit shy of being eye candy in terms of visuals. And on the music side of things the game does alright but the tracks aren't that memorable in my opinion.

Conclusion

"Yummy Breakfast" is an odd one to rate. After all, your score is going to vary a lot depending on how funny you find the big reveal to be. If you find the ending reveal to be boring then this game as a whole will be a boring affair to get through. And if you enjoy the big reveal at the end then the game's narrative probably seems better than it is.
