Progress Report

Post-Demo Translation Progress

Hello again, in yet another year!

Last time, the demo of the first few translated chapters of the game has been released... You did play the demo, right...? Anyway, this is about what's happening with the full translaton.

In short - I decided to change my pace to be a bit slower, as to not self-combust, but the progress has remained pretty stable regardless. By the end of 2023, I managed to release the full Polish director's cut-kinda version, made the demo for English-speakers and translated all the general, non-story and side content in the game. This January, I managed to finish the translation of the second act and hopefully - I'll be able to finish up the rest in the coming few months and start to fully implement it in the game. It's still a bit optimistic, but I think the translation is on the right path for release later this year.

And that's it for now! Thanks for keeping up with the game! Below is a little sneak peek from the rest of the translated Chapter 5(the demo ends right when it starts).

Announcement

Sunset Rain English Demo is now available!

Released one day earlier than planned, because Mysteries just cannot wait to be solved!

Hello!

I am very happy to announce that the demo of the Sunset Rain's English translation has been(finally) released! This demo contains the first 4 chapters of the game(and a bit of the 5th chapter), which should take a handful of hours to complete.

You can find the demo in the Downloads section, alongside the completed original Polish version(for those, who can understand it).

I hope you all will enjoy this demo and that it will give you a good taste of the full version, which should release in 2024! Let me know what you think, after playing - I'd love to hear your impressions!

Demo Release Date Announcement

Hey, everyone!

I guess, the title says it all. The demo for the English version of SUNSET RAIN, called "A brief visit to the Gates of Heaven" is almost complete on my part and should be ready for release on the 15th of December! Of course, provided nothing goes catastrophically wrong, but I sincerely hope, it won't...

Anyway, the demo will have the first four chapters of the game and some extras. It should give you a few hours of gameplay(or reading with puzzles, I guess). Hopefully, you should also be able to transfer the save game between the demo and the full version in the future(I will be testing that part, RM can be finicky with stuff like this...).

Well... that's all. As said - the demo will release almost two weeks from now. I hope, you all will be willing to try it!

Progress Report

The GRAND Translation Progress

Hey, everyone!

It's been a while, but that was because I had a lot on my plate, in regards to the game. Last month I have released the Director's Cut/improved version of Sunset Rain for the Polish-speaking audience and that version is the basis, on which the English translation is based on.

I didn't have much time to celebrate, though, as almost immediately - I started working on implementing the translation into the game and in these 3 weeks - I've made a lot of progress(thanks to me being in the process of changing a job and having quite a lot of free time, because of it)!

In that time, I've managed to translate and implement almost all general, interactive non-story stuff in the game and the UI. This is big, because this game has A LOT of flavour text and small interactions, so it would be very annoying and time consuming to translate it as I go. This also means, that when I implement translated story stuff(like dialogues) into the game - a lot of work will be already done and I can focus fully on the essential part.

There is still a lot of work, for me, to be done - the game being partially a visual novel is not an exaggeration - but it should be going smoother now. Hell, I had so much momentum from all these other translations, that I went and already fully implemented one translated chapter!

Which brings us to the most important part - the translation demo! Well, with how things are going at the moment(and if nothing goes wrong) - I think, that its release this year is a given. I'm not sure, if I'll be able to do it in November(it is possible, though), but December is very, very likely. I still have 4 chapters left to do, for the content I've planned for the demo - which should take a couple of hours to beat - but I'm optimistic. It's 90% translated already, just needs to be implemented.

I'll let you all know, at least 1-2 weeks before release. Hopefully, this means the full translation should be done in early-mid 2024, but we'll see how it goes.

That's all for now. Thank you for your patience and I hope you're looking forward to the demo and the subsequent full English release! Below, you can find some screenshots from the translated game:

How Interrogations work in Sunset Rain

Hello!

Recently, I realized that, even if from my perspective - the work on translation is going at a steady pace - from an outside view, it may seem meandering (or simply - dead). So, I decided to maybe show you a bit of gameplay mechanics of this adventure/visual novel hybrid! Because, yes - there is gameplay. And to not bore you with stuff like exploration or puzzles - let’s start from the very middle: from suspect Interrogations!

Some days, you just won’t have an access to a courtroom. An empty bar will have to do. A true Warrior of Truth does not need much more, though!

In Sunset Rain, Interrogations are conclusive events to major arcs of the story. It is then, when all you’ve learned - from the investigating, talking to people and puzzle solving - will be put to a test. If you are familiar with trials in Ace Attorney series(or even something like Danganronpa), which was a big inspiration for this game - you should know what to expect, however - this game presents a bit of its own spin on the formula. I’ll guide you, partly, through the entire “process”, mostly ignoring fine details - as these should be left for your actual playthrough… It’ll still be a bit long-winded, so get comfortable!

PHASE 1 - CHOOSING A TOPIC

The Interrogation always opens with selecting an appropriate topic, regarding the case at hand. Generally, you will start with one or two topics available, but with progressing the Interrogation - more may be added. There are times, when you can tackle the topics in whichever order you want, so feel free to ask the suspect about what interests you or what you think is most important, at the moment.

Just one more thing, before you start grilling some poor sap - remember to Check your Evidence! Make sure you understand, what you have in your arsenal and how it may be useful, to the topic you are about to select.

PHASE 2 - TESTIMONY/QUESTIONING

This is where things get serious! After choosing a topic, your next step is to interrogate the witness/suspect… as you may expect. The goal is to go through the testimony, while looking out for possible contradictions. If you’re not sure - there are two things you can do. First, you can check your evidence, just like during the topic selection and decide if it may be connected to the current statement. If there are still doubts - you can ASK the suspect to elaborate on the current statement. This may(or may not) confirm your suspicions and give you a hint, to focus on.

ASKing will not be easy, however, since each time you do it - the suspect’s fragile patience will deteriorate, which is symbolized by their Tolerance Meter (or BTM). Nobody likes their arguments to be questioned, after all! Asking for elaboration is a powerful tool, in every interrogator’s arsenal - just be sure to use it wisely and not overdo it!

PHASE 3 - REFUTATION!

This is it! The moment of truth! You have found a contradiction in witness’ testimony! The only thing left to do, is to navigate to the statement you think is fishy and SHOW evidence, to disarm the suspect’s weak argument!

Just make sure it’s the right one, or the suspect will not appreciate it, which will drain your remaining Tolerance Meter, for this topic. As stated in the previous “Phase”, you can check your evidence at any time, while going through the testimony.

This may also be a good time to go through the type of evidence, every Problem Solver will encounter on their journey:

Normal Item - Items useful during your journey through the game, mostly related to many puzzles you will encounter. You won’t have to worry about these during Interrogations.

Evidence - “Hard Proof” used to pinpoint contradictions in the testimony, to the suspect. Sometimes, these may be updated with new context or information, during, or out of the Interrogation.

You can easily find them in your inventory, by {E} next to their name. (just pretend, there is {E}, not {D}, in the screenshots…)

Clues - Not “items” in a physical sense, but thoughts, hunches and loose pieces of info, which sometimes can be connected to actual evidence, to update it with new information. Connecting these always happens, before the Interrogation takes place, so there is no penalty for getting it wrong, just remember - some clues may never be useful or connect to anything, in any meaningful way.

You can discern Clues in your inventory, by {?} next to their name.

PHASE 4 - REFUTATION (FOR REAL THIS TIME)

So, you have found a weak point in witness’ testimony AND the exact evidence needed to break it. Congratulations! You can now enjoy your opponent scrambling, to salvage their feeble lies! Don’t relax too much, though - they may still fight back and put your proof into question. You will have to think on your feet and be ready to counter their new claims, to emerge victorious…

But, when you do - the topic is done for and you will be able to go for the suspect’s next line of defense. After exhausting all the available topics, an option to select a CONCLUSION will become available - where you will have a chance to finalize your argument and ultimately prove, whether the witness was really telling the truth, or not…

And… that’s it. It took some time to explain, for sure, but this was a general overview of how Interrogations work in Sunset Rain. Nuances were left out of course, but hopefully - you will all enjoy discovering them, while playing the game.

Thank you all for reading this and I hope this post made you a bit more familiar with the game, than any “general” translation progress post would do. There is still quite a way to go with the translation itself, but hopefully - I will be able to deliver some news about it soon, too.

Have a nice day!

Progress Report

Translation Progress

Hello!

It's been a while since anything was posted for this game... on this site, at least.

The last post was about the Polish full release of the game, where I also announced the English translation. Needless to say, this is what I've been working on for these last few months. That and many improvements to the game itself, which should make it much better, when the English-speaking audience will be able to finally play the game. This improvements include stuff like quality of life features, more content and new graphics, like additional pictures and new character portraits(don't laugh too much, please):

I have a lot of these planned improvements already done, but there are still some more to take care of. In the meantime - I am working on the translation itself. I have already translated most of the pictures with text, all the UI elements and general game terms, the entire prologue chapter and most of the 1st chapter. I am also in the process of cataloguing everything in spreadsheets to have content related for each chapter in one place. As with the game's new features, there is still much to be done here and the progress is frankly slow, but steady. There is a lot of text, you see - almost visual novel amount...

Anyway, I hope I will still be able to release the game in English, this year. It will still be free, so no worries there. It may just take a while... If you're interested in the game - thank you for your patience! And if you seek more info about the game itself, I post more regularly on the GAME'S TUMBLR BLOG, but not that much.

Have a nice day!

Announcement

Polish version is now available!

Hello!

I am glad to announce that SUNSET RAIN has been released… in Polish language, for now. What does it mean exactly:

For non-Polish speakers:
You have a “living” proof that the game is done and playable. All you need to wait for is a translation - the work on which will commence very soon and hopefully - will be done in early 2023 (it has quite many words, you see…). Thank you for your patience and I hope the game will be worth the wait.

Oh, you must be that “problem” guy.

For Polish speakers:

Możecie zagrać w grę już teraz!

Sunset Rain - Progress Report #2

Header art(before applying thousands of filters in GIMP) by: Pequod

Wow, it’s been literal months since the last progress report! Almost a year, actually... So, what’s changed during that time?

Quite a lot, to be honest. I’m happy to say, that the progress was tremendous and I have managed to complete all playable and story parts of the game, faster than I expected. I’ve also done almost all additional, quality of life improvements and features, so I will be able to start testing soon! A little slower process is replacing the art and music placeholders, but it is also coming along.

If all keeps going nicely, I presume the Polish version of the game should be available in the Autumn of 2022. After that - all hands on deck will be on translation and releasing the game in English, which hopefully will be done in the end of 2022/early 2023. I really hope to release it in a timely manner, but nevertheless thank you for your patience. Let’s just hope, everything will go according to plan.

Have a nice day! I’ll go back to work, in the meantime...

Sunset Rain - Progress Report #1

Greetings, whoever is looking at this page!

It’s been... around two months, I think, since the English announcement for Sunset Rain. As you can, probably, see – there wasn’t really any actual progress information posted about the game, aside from the trailer, assorted screenshots and some posts on Twitter... I guess, I should rectify it somehow.

First off – the game, content-wise, is coming around nicely, but a little slowly. I’ve been working on it since 2019 and have reached way over the half-way mark, recently. I’m confident in that the entire story and playable parts should be done in the first half of 2022 – more complicated art assets, music and testing is another story, but let’s hope for the best (and I can help out, at least, in two of these tasks).

These last few months, I’ve been pretty busy with two particular chapters, which ended up being the most „advanced” and complicated out of all the others – the planning, making assets, designing puzzles and maps took a lot of time and I’m still not done with a few of them. Thankfully, I may be able to start implementing logic and gameplay to these sections soon and then - things should start going much smoother from there.

So, yeah – that’s basically where the development is standing now. It’s going at a pretty steady pace and hopefully – I will be able to keep it up. That being said – even though the game is coming up fine – I’ve been having more and more problems with selecting right promotional material. I guess that’s a curse of making heavy story-driven games – it’s hard to give you some good snippets/screenshots, without accidentally spoiling the game (and boy, I’ve straddled that line sometimes). I guess, I should say – if you’re following the game, don’t be discouraged, if there won’t be any news about it, for a while. I still have some stuff left to show, but y’know – I will run out eventually (at least, up to the point, where I’ll get more art like character portraits, etc.). Rest assured, that everyone involved in this game is hard at work!

Thank you very much for reading and your interest in the game! I hope it will be to your liking, when it finally releases... The next progress report will, probably, be posted at the end of this year.

Have a nice day!
