All begins with the Essence
All returns to the Essence
Thousands of years ago, an ancient civilization, Salfor, protected a crystal. This crystal was formed by GOD himself. This crystal was a gateway to another world: the afterlife... which where people lived another life within. It was basically heaven. Nations from around the world wanted this crystal because not only did it hold the afterlife, it held the power of magic, and these other nations wanted it. Salfor hid the crystal away, only to be rediscovered thousands of years later by The Imperial Qaros, an empire who wanted nothing but power.

They knew of the legends of the crystal, how it's power can be extracted, but none succeeded. Two of the best scientists finally found a way of doing this. They were only in their teens when they found how to do this. They tried to fuse the power into soldiers, but the soldiers would just die. They tried different kinds of people, but no avail. They did research on this matter and found that the crystal needs great capacity, which children have. They would use children, but the children would lose their memories from the shock.

They would be warriors, and would allow Qaros to win.

Gameplay
Gameplay features your typical side view battle system with ATB. You are on a mission to destroy the crystal that Qaros possesses and stop them from turning children into magical warriors. There are many different weapons each character will have throughout the adventure. Xavier (formally Xander) is a blue mage who can learn spells from enemies. Jessen is a thief who can steal. Storm is a Dragoon who can jump and do dragon knight abilities. And Keira is a mage-gunner who can use magic.

Possible Questions

Q:Why are you remaking this game? Especially in RPG Maker 2003?
A: Well, I no longer have the original files to work on it for one. Second, The team that was helping me are all off doing more adultier things now. I was lucky to still have most of the graphics (some are outdated, but I'm pretty good at spriting/editing images) I really wanted to work on this game for some time now, but I'm no good at scripting and whatnot. If I had to choose any engine to use, it would have been RPG Maker MZ. But I'm okay with RM2k3. I know ways around the limitations.

Q:Why did you change the logo? The other one was so much nicer!
A: Pretty much the same as above. I don't have the original files for it. Alexander Smith (Closed_Worlds) created the original (I drew the logo, but he really put the work in for the font)

Q:Are you changing anything from the original?
A: Why, yes. But not too much. I recently replayed the demo and I enjoyed it quite a lot. There was a few things that felt off, but older me has been through experiences that could probably make some of these scenes a little better. Especially with all the type-o's.

Q:When can we expect a demo?
A: I... don't know. I have most of the maps redone already and a good chunk of events done. If I make a demo, it will probably end before you get to the Village of Relene, maybe sooner. I'm not sure yet. I'm pretty busy and this hasn't been the easiest for me.

Q: Is there anything I can do to help?
A: Sure! If you are interested in helping in anyway, do let me know. Any way to speed this up would be greatly appreciated. I've also composed a few pieces of music myself. I'm no pro, but if anyone out there would like to tidy them up, that'd be cool. I did lose a few pieces of music from the original FFEssence and composed new ones. I hope you all enjoy them!

I'm so happy you enjoyed the demo ^_^!

To me, it sounds like you really want more! Well, I'm still working on it, definitely. And maybe some of your questions will be answered in the next demo (whenever that may be)

If you're interested, the RMXP demo from a billion years ago, its available right here: https://mega.nz/file/oeB0QR7R#YgTiP6sHMMIalclPzH-zfMwJPc56KZvteuu4pnlcW_0

Or you can watch it by the only person who let's played it https://youtu.be/cz7GY_8bG_E (he sounds very sarcastic, w/e. It's helping me do this remake without playing through the game completely every time. Also some of his complaints are valid.)

Just note that that version of the game and the version I'm working on differ greatly. A lot of the beginning of the game doesn't even state the raid on Eldia (Xavier and his brother are from The Republic of Eldia. Their leader Lord Kristophe sent Xavier, Biggs and Wedge on a mission to destroy the crystal). Like an NPC mentions it in the Povs but thats just about it. Xavier doesn't know whether his brother has been infused with the crystal or not. He knows what happens when one does get infused with the crystal (all memories are lost, basically become magical tanks in a sense. He really just wants to destroy the crystal first to save more lives and then try to get his brother)

As for the boss animation, sure I'll take a looksie. I would greatly appreciate it!

If UPRC ever comes out with a real remaster of Blackmoon Prophecy, you should play it. I'd even help him with graphics and lining the graphics up right if he likes. It's a great FF4 inspired fan game.
Currently working on a goblin sprite!

How does it look? Any thoughts?

Looks pretty nice, but perhaps it's a bit too tall? I'm kid of used to goblins being more of human child-height at most and this one seems like adult human-sized. Still, there might be some deviations within your setting from a traditional FF things so I'll be of open mind.

Besides, I played the demo and noticed a few types in that opening kind of like thing where you show different locales and characters. Like others noticed, Xavier needs more flesh out in the intro; right now he's just kind of a vengeful spirit and nothing else.

Aside of that, I found the Crystal to be a peculiar... being, for the lack of a better word. It's a crystal alright, but it's sentient and my first thought to that was: "Oh, it's like fal'Cie from Lightning Saga! I wonder how the story will continue!" and then BAM! The demo ended. ;_;

However the most flabbergasting thing is that you're remaking the game in RPG Maker... 2003. You could put in a newer engine and yet you still chose RM2k3... Personally, I'm not too fond of that engine because there's very little control over damage formulas so effectively the balance is completely out of the window, but that's just my opinion. If you'll be able to somehow make the battles not too broken it'll be miracle. Perhaps you'll planning to go with UPRC way: weapon ranks which increase damage multipliers with higher ranks so weapons are not useless when compared to skills...?

Xavier is kind of a one track mind. He gets more fleshed out a little later. I'm making a few changes to characterization.

Making Xavier not want to kill the soldiers is one of them, mainly because they were once kids who forcefully had to go through an infusion. He knows it's not their fault they are who they are.
Also, there is actually a bunch of things going on with him and reasons why he's not too bothered to save his brother right now, or any of the children really.

It's best to destroy the crystal so no more future incidents can occur. Who knows? Maybe his brother is already infused, and once that happens, they become a different person. Wedge had insiders working within Qaros so they pretty much gave them all the details they needed. Maybe I do need to put more emphasis on that.

As for using RM2k3; I'm using it mainly because I have no scripting knowledge and I kind of like the limitations. I've been working with it since I was 11-12 so I know it very well. If I had to choose an engine, though, it'd be MZ. But the lack of FF-styled plugins puts me off. No rows, back attack, not even a FF/2k3 styled battle UI. I chose XP back in the day because Atoa (victor sant) offered to help me with it. But those team members are doing something else nowadays. I don't even think victor is even working with RM anymore. But you're right about the damage formulas. I'll have to look at Blackmoon Prophecy to see how URPC did his. I've had a small look through it along with Time and Again(I pretty much stole... Steal lol... but I understand how it works.)

And I guess Essence is a lot like the XIII Saga mainly because I started working on it around that time in 2008 (no one probably remembers the old old old Essence before closedworlds did his sprite magic). I am changing things up a bit to give it its own identity. I'm a lot older and wiser. I've been through hardships and heartbreaks. I think I can make this game a little more magical than it was.
The Goblin sprite looks great, but I do agree with Noel on the height.

Exactly. I think folks are compartmentalizing this small demo a little too much. It's just a single mission and there'll be an entire game to flesh out his character. If anything, Biggs and Wedge deserve the screentime they get on account of they're probably not long for this world (as their character tropes go). Build some player affection for them before they get rubbed out.
Exactly. You don't get to know much about Cecil, Terra or even Cloud during the first mission. It's to set up the world and the plot. I am also going with a "no real main character" thing like ff6, just with less characters. All these characters are affected by Qaros and wish to put a stop to it.
Yeah, yeah, I played the old demo last night. I can see why Xavier does what he does now. This demo is definitely an improvement from how the story was structured originally, so I'm definitely looking forward to what happens next. the 60fps from rm2k3 is gonna be killer for these cutscenes.
much much appreciated ♥.

I decided to try creating a boss death animation today. (make sure the video is running at 60fps, cause it's kind of choppy)
The first one that plays is for whelk from ff6 as an example, the next one that plays is for Guardian within the current demo. I don't know if you'll find it useful, but I thought I'd take a stab at it anyways. I'm gonna try and turn it into a template/tutorial over the next couple of days.

Yeah. It makes a lot more sense for how different Xavier and Xander are.

Cutscene wise, I want to improve on the train animation by using battle animation instead of pictures, tho. I haven't tried it yet so I'm interested in how it may come out.

Okay, not gonna lie. That looks absolutely bada*s. That might actually be something I'm interested in incorporating in the game. Job well done!
So, in the OG FFEssence for XP, the dragoon soldiers didn't jump. Well, I made them.

Is it perfect? No. But I think it works pretty well given the limitations.

I had to use 3 switches for the trigger and animation, and 3 monsters (visible and invisible) to make this work.
Impressive :o Add some sound effects to those animations and you have something neat happening.
Hi, sorry that I had struggle to login my email due to issue with my password
but anyways, I am excited for that project game

Yeah. I was just testing it out to see if it worked. I haven't experienced a bug yet so hopefully it'll be pretty good. It looks a little awkward but then again, gilgamesh and headhunters looked awkward too. Staying true to FF lmao

Tried making a scan/libra ability but I don't think its possible...

Great to have you here Shadow! Hope you enjoy the full project once I'm eventually done. Things are moving pretty fast!
Kinda off topic,

I just wanted to show everyone the first version of the battle theme I did a year ago when I was learning to make music and how ew it sounded. I lost that original file but of course I remade it (which is the one in the game)

Idk. Just wanted to share that. Take a listen to the other 2 songs too. They wont be used in Essence, but they're fun to listen to I suppose lmao.
I like the boss dragoon jump, it's a neat feature. I also like the current battle theme, I didn't realize it had to go through a few inerations before they one we're currently listening to now, it's really well done. looking forward to more.

Tried making a scan/libra ability but I don't think its possible...

Aten the late creator Final Fantasy Dreams made a scan/steal template on RMTutorials many years ago. it's definitely worth checking out. The only caveat to using this system is that; because rm2k3 is condition based and requires the player to attack in order for target enemies for certain conditions to take place - everytime you use scan/steal on the enemy, it will say "Miss"

But that's okay, because you're going to be using the message window to inform the players anyways if they successfully stealed or scanned; etc. If you're okay with this caveat, it's definitely worth checking out. It's fully functional and you can very easily modify it and copy and paste it into as many battles as you.

When I have some free time, I'll see if I can upload a video of it in action and the file for the system here.

EDIT: Here's a link to thread on the tutorial, download link is included

It's a steal and scan tutorial so you'll want to look at both. I know you already have a steal system, so you'll want to look at the other one. I'll try and upload an example of it in action, later on.
You can also activate something like Libra/Scan from a Skill menu by checking MP differences, which is probably ideal considering you're doing Final Fantasy.

Have a simple battle event with condition Xavier uses WhiteMagic Command. Use it to...
1. Store Xavier's current MP into Variable 1
2. Turn on a Switch

Have another battle event that activates with condition Switch is ON. Use it to...
1. Store Xavier's current MP into Variable 2
2. Do Variable Operation : Variable 1 - Variable 2
3. Condition Branch : Does Variable 1 = 0 MP. If so, do more branches for If Monster #1-8 is the current target and go to town.
4. Don't forget to turn the Switch to OFF

The purpose of using a Switch to separate the code is because uses Command activates BEFORE your character does his cast animation, whereas the Switch condition won't be checked until AFTER.
The ultimate caveat to this method is that you can NOT have any other skills cost the same MP. You also have to be wary of Gold Hairpins (1/2 MP equipment) making more expensive skills go into range of activating your event. You can mitigate this a little with skill subsets (WhiteMagic, BlackMagic) but otherwise you just have to plan accordingly.

Fun Fact
You can get rid of the MISS by having your skill add a State that does nothing, then include Change Monster Condition in your code to get rid of it so the player never even knows it was there.

I think I'll skip on Libra only because it just seems like a lot of work arounds and stuff. I mean, it's a FF thing, but I don't think its completely necessary. I can deal with not having it.

As for that fun fact thoooooooo. I like that. I never thought of that. I'll try it with Steal and see what happens.

As for the update on Essence, I'm done with pretty much everything up to the end of the Povs section. I am trying to rewrite Cyn to make him less of a Kefka ripoff, though. It kind of bothers me. Fun fact, though. In my original version of Essence, I did have plans to make Cyn a Kefka-in-spirit character, but female. Closedworlds changed it, though but I was fine with it. Nowadays, though, not so much.

Ah, sorry to hear that. I spent a few hours throwing together what it might look like but with FF5's Scan animation, it's super rough. The first Scan show's Guardians stats while at full health, the second scan, shows how the HP and MP has lowered after a few turns after tracking it's stats through variables.

Go with what you feel is best. the biggest problem with RM2k3 games these days is feature creep and I feel like it's one of the main reasons why we haven't seen more final fantasy fan games hit the finish line. But yeah, go with what you feel is best. Looking forward to more with this.

I meeann if you already made it, I guess I could use it XD It just sounded complicated to do. I'm decent with event scripting, but I'm definitely no pro. That looks absolutely amazing

I know you said you lost some items and music. I'm pretty certain I have all the original midis as well as my arrangements, many of which I'll admit went off course because I wasn't working in tandem with you. If you'd like, I can try again. I also have rips and the like you used in the past. I think I even have a copy of the original title screen.
