Version 2 of the game is up!

It's been a long time coming! I've finally released an update to this adorable little game of mine. Here is the changelog:

> Changed the game ini file to search for RGSS102E instead of 104E, to make the game stand-alone.

> Reworked level 6.

> Fixed some passability bugs where tina and other npcs could stand on solid tiles.

> Added a save point before the boss.

I'm preparing this game for a release on GameJolt, and the main thing I'm trying to iron out is whether it can be played on computers who don't have RMXP installed. If anyone else notices any problems in that regard, send me a message!

Featured Game!

Well this was certainly unexpected, but Tina of the Stars has become March 2013's featured game on RMN! I just wanted to say I am thankful of for everyone who has supported this game thus far, and I promise that I will offer even better games to this site in the future.

Thanks! *throws confetti*

Completed...?

After roughtly 3-4 years of inconsistent dabbling, I'm finally deeming Tina of the Stars to be a complete game.

Unfortunately, the game is a little shorter than what I originally planned, mainly due to difficulties in implementing post-game content. However, I feel that this project still stands on its own, and I am ready to move on.

I encourage everyone to give this game a go, as the stuff added in this latest build is a little different from previous versions. Here is the list of updates:

1) The maximum amount of lives in this game has been changed to six, and you start with six lives accordingly.

2) The probability of peacheak appearing to give you an extra life has been raised to accommodate.

3) All bonus games should grant you an extra life if you are deprived of at least one life.

4) Enemy positions have been adjusted slightly to prevent instances of dying where you stand still at the start of levels.

5) Fixed some game-breaking bugs at the boss fight

6) Info about gaining extra lives has been added to the tutorial

Thanks to all who have played this game and provided feedback. It's been a fruitful, albeit long development experience. This game was originally meant to be a short contest entry before I decided to go all in with it. The download should be up, now have fun!

Be sure to post your highscore into this page to be added to the highscore list!

Progress Report

Everyone needs an extra heart...

Just like to provide another update to this project. After considering some of the comments made to this game so far I would like to reveal the following gameplay changes:

  • The maximum amount of lives in this game has been increased to 6 from 3, with the HUD updated accordingly to match this change.

  • Enemies have been slightly re-positioned to avoid instances where the player gets insta-killed at the start of the level.

  • The "Peacheek" item, which is your means of gaining lives in this game, now has a 1/11 chance of appearing from a 1/3 chance, to compensate for the increase in possible lives.

  • You still start the game with three lives, however you still have a chance of finding the Peacheek item and increasing your lives as the game progresses.

From here on the next download I upload for this game should be the final game, including challenge mode. As I now have a lot more time to work on this I'll keep updating to show you guys my stuff.

Where to go from here...?

First off, I'd like to thank everyone who has taken the time to play and give in-depth feedback on this game. In spite of the fact that this game is intended to be short, it was actually one of my most challenging RPG Maker experience yet. I am glad that those who have played this game have found it enjoyable, even in spite of some game-breaking flaws it has had in the past.

As I look forward to bringing out a final version of this game, I would like to ask you, players and fellow developers, what you want to see.

1) Do you feel the game needs a Challenge Mode. I know I mentioned about it in the past, but I'm having some second thoughts. Does the game have any replay value for you? Is it "too hard" for a Challenge Mode?

2) What is your opinion on the game's difficulty? Too hard? Too easy? I have gotten quite a few mixed reactions on the game's difficulty. Ideally, I would want to have a young child be able to pick up and beat this game. What should I change? Do you think the game is "fair" with its current difficulty?

New Beta version 1.1 released

I have just uploaded the latest download to Tina of the stars. Here are some of the changes:

- The font of the timer was set to its default "Ariel" font as oppose to my custom "Manga Temple" font. This is because not enough people were installing the provided font file, causing a bug where the numbers of the timer were not displaying, so I just chose to leave it default.

- The placement of the enemies in levels 3, 4, 5 and 6 were changed, as to keep enemies far from the starting position of the player so that they won't die too soon.

- The first bonus game, where you are punching the target-shaped monsters, will now grant you an extra life at the end of the level if you are below 3 lives.

- Addressed some crashing issues with two of the scripts in this game. There may be some still out there, but for the most part I've fixed some of the common ones.

- Fixed a bug where the score panel would not display once you load your game from your save file.

- The "Would you like to save your progress" screen now plays music.

I apologize for any inconveniences that occurred with the last patch, but hopefully I've created a more enjoyable game for you all. Give it a try and tell me what you think! :)

Tina of the Stars Beta released!

It's been a long time since I worked on this project, but now I can safely say that a new playable version is up again!

This demo includes a roughly 80% complete version of the game. The normal game is complete, however challenge mode will be unavailable until next upload. Report any problems you find with this release on this game page.

Also, the highscore table page will be submitted shortly. Be the first to make it to the top 10 players of this game!

Best wishes,

Tina of the Stars Demo Preview - 06/22/12

As the NaGaDeMo event comes closer to it's end, I have recently found new motivation to get this game completed. As of now, I am working on some of the final gameplay tweaks to the first mode of the game (there are two modes: Normal Game and Challenge Game). If I ever get this 100% done in before the deadline, here is what you should expect in terms of changes from the last download:

-All levels of Normal Game playable
Including the boss fight. Credits roll and ending will also be implemented before the June 1st deadline

-You can defeat monsters by walking up to them, as oppose to pressing the space key
Playing this time and time again, I've reasoned that the default hit detection of RMXP was just too obnoxious to deal with. I have already tested this against the boss of this game, and it should improve the flow of the game tremendously.

-Adjustments to enemy behavior
Notice how the enemies in the game seem to just "derp" after you get all the stars? With this next release, I will adjust some movement behaviors to make sure the enemies don't lose all of their girth... Even though they can't do anything to you regardless at that point.

That is all. Thanks for tuning in!

Back in business?

Well guys, I finally got a new PC!

It's a Dell Studio XPS in case you are interested, and so far it friggin' rocks :D

Needless to say, I still need to transfer my files to this computer, so I can get this project back in full swing.

I actually did do some work on this over this short hiatus. However, the next release of this would be the full game. I admit to slacking off with this project, and I want to treat you guys with a complete experience.

So, this ends my hiatus. Hopefully school won't get in the way of this too much.

Miscellaneous

Postponed... But fear not!

Yep, sorry. As much as I thought I would get this FINISHED over my summer break, crap happens.

My PC has, for at least the past 5 months, been ridden with viruses. Such that at this point, I can't even go on the internet with it, no matter what browser I choose. The only way I'm typing this blog right now is because I'm using a spare computer belonging to my parents. >_>

Fortunately, however, this may not last for too long.

Hopefully within next week, I would be getting a new computer, one that is at least up to date and doesn't have a sound card that dies every 15 hours of use on the computer. I kind of needed to get a new one, as my current Windows XP OS'd system is well over 6 years old.

When I do, I'll also have some transferring that I need to do, so for now, I'm putting this project on a (hopefully) short hiatus, and I promise to bust my butt in getting something close to the final version as soon as this is done.

That is all, and I apologize for the inconvenience.
