Development Spotlight! (and some testimonials)

It's been about a month and a half since the release of the spring season and I'm absolutely thrilled at the reception the game has gotten, both here and elsewhere on the great wide internet. The fact that World's Dawn was put in the Development Spotlight by the good admins of this community is a huge honor and makes me feel better about the hundreds (thousands, let's be honest) of hours that went into this project over the years.

I am hard at work on the next season of the game, which I'm expecting to have ready around July or August. So for those of you who've played the current season and are awaiting more, rest easy! For those of you who haven't yet, maybe the following opinions will change your mind =)

-----------------------------------------------------------

Testimonials

"World's Dawn, a free game crafted by one-person development studio Wayward Prophet, captures all the best things about Harvest Moon but also weaves a much more interesting story around characters that have a lot of depth to them."
- Lena LeRay, IndieGames.com

"The episodic World's Dawn is one you should keep both eyes on if you've ever been swallowed up by Harvest Moon."
- Tom Sykes, PC Gamer

"If you like games that require you to manage a business in a small town, that allow you to play at your own pace, and that provide a fantastic way to spend an hour or so each day, I highly recommend taking a look at World’s Dawn, as it delivers the 'farmhouse role-playing game' fantastically."
- James Bartholomeou, Indie Love

"So, if you need something to keep you amused this week, consider World’s Dawn. It’s free, it should run on any PC, and it’ll give you a nice farming fix."
- Jenni Lada, Technology Tell

Pretty awesome stuff! Thanks again to everyone who's played or supported the game in any way thus far -- there's lots more on the way!

Feedback survey and future updates

Hello all!
I'm very happy with 1000+ downloads after just about one month. Thanks to everyone for your feedback and support thus far, but mostly just for your interest in the game. I really tried to do something different than the average RM project and it's great to see those efforts are appreciated around here.

Quick update on future plans:
Each season will be released as a separate chapter, with summer next, followed by autumn, and finally -- obviously -- winter. The plan is to complete the entire game by the end of this year, at which point you'll be able loop back around to spring and keep playing indefinitely. As with the Harvest Moon games I've looked to for inspiration, there's no real end or time limit to your farming. Sure, Sugar Blossom needs saving, but you can take your time doing it!

This means that you should definitely hang onto your save files located inside the "Diary" folder! I have tested this system for carrying over your data to new seasons, and everything seems to be working as it should. There's still the slightest of chances we'll run into a bug along the line, but you should be able to continue your current story as each new season is released.

Finally, I put together a very short (10-question) survey and am looking for as much feedback as I can gather. This will really help with the development of future seasons, so if you've played the game and don't mind spending a couple minutes filling it out, I'd really appreciate it.

Take the awesomely fun spring season survey!

Of course, you can always leave your thoughts here as well, or on the project website, studio Facebook page, or anywhere else you can find me around the interwebs.

Thanks again! And stay tuned for updates on the upcoming summer season!

Progress Report

Bug fixes and screenshot comparisons

It's been a little over a week since the release of the spring season and I'm happy with the response so far! Since then, players have helped me identify a handful of issues and bugs (nothing too major) that went unnoticed by myself and my testers. Most of those issues have been fixed and a new version of the season has been uploaded! For anyone who encountered these issues and have yet to complete the season, you should be able to copy your save file over from the old "Diary" folder to the new one.

If anyone finds anything else, or has further suggestions on how to improve the game moving forward, please let me know!

Which brings me to my second point, which is that I would absolutely love some more feedback on the game. The players I have heard from have been great, but if anyone else wants to help me out by writing up a quick review or even just a few sentences on what you like or don't like, I would truly appreciate it. I've already started work on the next chapter (to hopefully come out within a couple months) and could really use your help.

Finally, I was looking at the old demo that was released was back in 2010 and laughing about how much different (and worse) the game looked then. I have some fancy mouseover comparisons over at my blog but the screenshot below will give you some idea. World's Dawn has come a long way!

Spring season available!

After long years in development, I'm happy to say that the complete spring season of World's Dawn is ready to download!

The file is approximately 74 MB and contains several hours of gameplay. It's still not the finished game, but will certainly give you more than a basic idea of what to expect. Not much will change about the game mechanically besides further content being added for summer, fall, and winter.

Please try out the season and let me know what you think! Your feedback as a player is what keeps me going, and what makes the hundreds (probably thousands, honestly) of hours developing entirely worth it. I really tried to make something outside the box when it comes to RPG Maker projects and I hope those efforts are appreciated.

Thank you to everyone for your support and your passion! Let me know if you run into any issues or have any questions regarding the spring season. Otherwise... enjoy your new life in Sugar Blossom Village!

Progress Report

And we're back!

I honestly can't believe how fast time flies, and how long it's been since I've had anything to update on this project... I've been working on it sporadically for over 4 years now, on top of a bunch of other games and more personal projects. I have all kinds of excuses, but none of them are good enough and really not that interesting, either. Friends, family, and a career can really get in the way of RM development, frustratingly.

However, I never gave up on World's Dawn and I'm happy to the say the Spring Season is finally ready to play! It's the hand of select testers for a final round of tweaks, but my plan is to release the full season on Saturday, April 12.

The game has changed A LOT since I released the demo so long ago, and I think people will certainly be able to tell -- the graphics, gameplay, and presentation have all been completely overhauled. It's impossible to be accurate with a playtime prediction when it comes to this kind of nonlinear game, but most testers have reported completing the season somewhere in the vicinity of 8 hours.

Here's a couple new screenshots to tide you over until release (and to prove I'm not full of crap after all this time)!

I do want to sincerely thank everyone that's supported this project since I first posted it, and apologize for the inconsistent updates and false promised. I hope you'll still give the Spring Season a shot!

New trailer and imminent release!

Hey everyone! Once again I waited way too long to give you guys any updates, but that doesn't mean I haven't been hard at work.

I missed my self-set deadline of spring to release the spring season of the game... However, it is nearly complete and will be sent out to my testers soon. After a little bit of polish work it should be ready to play! The finished season will contain about 7-8 hours of gameplay.

In celebration of the imminent release (and to promote it, I suppose) I created a launch trailer that shows off final graphics and updated systems! Take a look below and let me know what you think.

Thanks for all your support, as always! Shouldn't be long now...

LockBall ready for download!

As promised, the LockBall side project is complete and ready to download!

Check it out on its own game page and give it a try! About 99% of the sport was designed using events, switches and variables, with the other tiny bit done with some helpful scripts.

LockBall is not (and isn't meant to be) a huge, complex game. My hope is that you'll have some fun with it for a few minutes at a time, and that it will get you psyched for the upcoming Spring season of World's Dawn. You can compete against 7 opponents with unique strengths and weaknesses, level up in 3 different skill categories, and even unlock extra content the more you play.

You can also view a special passcode that will allow you to carry your progress over into World's Dawn! Spend time getting better at LockBall now and reap the benefits later in the final game.

Finally, be sure to check out the new project website if you haven't already and let me know what you think:

Stay tuned for more updates in the near future and thanks for your support!

New website launched!

Here it is, a long awaited (and well-deserved) update!

First things first: I just launched a new website for World's Dawn to coincide with a whole big studio reinvention. You can check it out at worldsdawn.com!

The site has some of the same information you've already seen, but there's also a detailed beginner's guide that will introduce you to many of the characters, places, and gameplay features planned for the game. Check it out and let me know what you think! Feedback is always great for things like this. And if you're interested, check out the new waywardprophet.com for related projects and info.

If you haven't already seen them, there are new images posted, showcasing what the final graphical style for World's Dawn will look like. You can expect more info soon (I promise this time), but the 4-5 hour Spring Season is very close to completion. I don't think it would be a stretch to say that by the end of April, you'll be playing the game in some capacity.

The final update is a brand new spin-off project based on the sport of LockBall. It will be a fun, fast-paced game to spend a few minutes at a time on, and should be released in the next couple of days. If you play enough and level up your statistics, you'll even be able to carry your progress over into World's Dawn!

More updates will follow in the near future. Until then, check out all the new stuff at the site and get ready for the release of LockBall!

As always, thanks for all your support.

Miscellaneous

Bundle of new screenshots

I just posted a bunch of new screenshots showing off the newly-redesigned HUD and some new graphics. You'll also see some gameplay systems that may or may not feature in the current demo, including fishing, LockBall, and a Guitar Hero style rhythm mini-game from one of Sugar Blossom's annual festivals.

Take a look!

Progress is steady and I'm still hoping to hit my end-of-the-year release date. The game is basically playable all the way through (with technically "infinite" playtime) but there's a lot more to do in terms of making it actually enjoyable to play. Planting crops and waiting for them to grow is only fun for so long.

---------------------------------------

Also new is the Facebook page for World's Dawn and some of my other game projects:
http://www.facebook.com/waywardprophet

Upon the final release of the game, there will be hidden secrets and bonuses that you will only be able to find if you're a fan on Facebook. It only takes a second (clicking the "Like" button is all it takes) and there will be plenty of in-game incentive. Or if you are interested in the project and want to receive more regular updates/show your support, that's a simple way to do so.

Finally! If you haven't already watched the new gameplay trailer, I'd appreciate a view and a comment!

Thanks for reading...

New extended gameplay trailer!

I'm still chipping away at World's Dawn! My imminent graduation and all that implies has been taking up the majority of my time lately... However, my extra hours have all gone into this project and definitely hope to release the final game on schedule before the end of the year.

I put together an extended trailer to show off some of the updated graphics and gameplay systems. Let me know what you think!

Also I'm still looking for that elusive first review, so if you've played the demo I would really appreciate some quick feedback. Thanks!
