Currency? Who needs currency?

Currency in RPGs always confused me. I want a shield that costs 80 gold. I guess I'd better go kill 20 monsters that drop 4 gold each. It seems like a requirement for mindless grinding, which just isn't fun. It's downright filler material. And why do you need to reward players with gold when EXP works just as well?

I've made a movement away from currency in my latest RPG projects, and haven't looked back. For example, the game I've uploaded on this site, Seal of the Maidens, is totally gold-less.

But what about Equipment? :O
You find it! If you explore an area, you'll find equipment hidden all over. Plus quests and monster drops commonly reward equipment. Besides, how many RPGs have you played where by endgame you have way too much gold and the ultimate equipment is found in a chest? It's silly.

But what about Inns? :O
A player is low on health, but doesn't have the gold to afford an inn. You're going to demand the player to kill even more things before they get the option to heal? That's just moronic. Healing should be free.

tl;dr: currency in RPGs is pointless.

Cool idea not using currency, but...
Shouldn't there be at least points or something?
What about points you spend for developing your character gets you items aswell and points that let you use specials or something (instead of mp) could buy other stuff like weapons?
Or a trade system instead of completely searching for stuff?
I noticed that while playing the demo, and its a pretty good idea. I wouldn't say currency is completely useless, if you handle it correctly, but it is definitely minor enough that it can be done away with without much of a worry.
The inns thing definitely doesn't make any sense. The amount spent to rest is always trivial anyway. I also like pokecenters in pokemon games, where healing is free and always will be free.
It is an Interesting thought, a game with no currency. While a currency system does bring some undesirable side effects as you listed. It does add some depth to the game in the form of decision making. Such as do I want to upgrade a couple pieces of equipment or should I buy that uber spell? This will give the game more replay value potentially, because they can choose to spend their money different equipment, instead of being limited to what they find..

However there is a catch, the game must carefully control the flow of money the player receives. You don't want money just getting thrown at them, so they never have to make a decision with it. And likewise you don't want to make money so scarce that it becomes a grindfest, just to use the inn. Like you said in some games players will have an excess of worthless money at the end. Game creators can add large purchase novelty items to maybe make a reward for massing their coffers.

In the end games can benefit or be hurt by a currency system and its up too the creator to match his game with an appropriate system.

Currency isn't useless if you use it properly. A lot of games simply do not.

Exactly for example some of the final fantasy games did that properly like FFX others did not like FFXIII where as potions are to cheap and revival items are to expensive.
Fallen-Griever summed up my views. I strongly disagree with your last sentence, it's wrong depending how currency is used. Currency can be used to balance out power equipment and items preventing the actors becoming too strong or too weak in battles.

The point of currency is to be a enjoyable limit system where the player has to think carefully what to buy and what not to buy. Currency is also useful to giving the player small rewards being accomplishing small tasks.

I'd agree if grinding is required to heal and get good equipment, then it would be annoying for the player and pointless. But that's a problem with the developer unbalance calculations, not having currency.

Finding equipment in chests, so long you can balance it well, sounds a great idea! That's an interest reward to give the player The Inn goes down to personal taste really, some prefer paying for it while others don't. I have the same taste as you and prefer Inns not to cost currency. =)

Interesting choices, good luck!
