Something about oppress- is that Sniper Rifle!?

I know she is desperate for a drink, but the game starts with hallucination?

Much like Ocean's previous game, this one is also short in length (about 2 hours tops if you take your time), slightly rushed and is quite buggy - thought these issues are mostly *I think* due to time constraints. Despite all the setbacks however, I still think this is a neat little gem that have tons of potential (and worth playing!)

Graphics : 4/5

Much like his previous works, Rubi, Ocean used SOM graphics to populate his little town. While it does clash a little, his original sprites do maintain the overall consistency.

The sprites never show it, but apparently they are all armed

In addition, his mapping also looks pretty polished (and not uh, square-ish) - I admit I thought he made this in Rm2k3 when I first saw it. :(
You traitor

Story 3/5
================
My version of the story:

...Oh whuh..?.. I..I am sorry, I was too busy staring at your...b..b...beautiful, smile.

In seriousness though, it is pretty interesting. The story is focused more on Adalyn (character), and well, you kind of grow fond of her as the story progress - despite some of the cliches of the setting and plot. For me, in the end, I threw the whole mumbo jumbo world history through the window, but not the characters.

I mean, who can hate those b-

Gameplay : 3.5/5

Like I said, it's riddled with lags and... bugs - but honestly these strange bugs makes me laugh most of the time so yeah ... I... I dunno. It's time issue right!
(Rubi, Stop moonwalkingg).

Balance
When you begin the game, you start with a gun and a knife. Melee weapon have shorter range and weaker output but are usually faster (to charge!). Guns on the other hand are limited to the Ammos in the game. At first you will start with a weak weapon but as your cash grows, you will gain access to different guns

There is a whole boring history of gunsmithing of this game world somewhere, but this should sum it up

However, money in this game is rather limited. To make things worse, aside from guns, there are: Skills, Power Up and Bullets to buy. Bullets allows you to actually USE your guns (Unless you enjoy dual wielding a whip and hammer.... actually that's not too shabby for challenge), Power up is useful if you want more out of item drops (adds more value to pickups). Very useful since most of your bullets would be from pick ups - as well as health early in the game - otherwise you have to check barrels or go to the bar for it. (not worth it).
And then there is skill....

Not for the masochists

...that is rather game breaking in itself. It is basically MAGIC and requires charging to be used (just like the other attacks, main attack and sub attack). Specifically this guy. There are other skills as you can see, but... yeah. Healing. Coupled with Haste (item that speeds up Skill charge), and of course, PATIENCE, you can practically heal yourself as many times as you want. Though it is not necessary of course.

By the time you can buy the Sniper Rifle/ Shotgun/Whichever gun you like best + Melee (or go GUNKATAAA and wield two guns) + Heal. Also, did I mention that the enemies doesn't have any long range attacks? yes, they don't. You can basically try trapping them between an impassable terrain and hit them till they are gone. Then again, it ain't easy implementing enemy attacks/AI so... yeah, I guess it's kind of understandable.

Music 3/5
================
it is a matter of taste really, and I find the music enjoyable. The sounds however, is a bit lacking.

Yes, I make up my own gun noise while playing, why do you ask?

All the guns (well, I haven't tried all but..) have the same sound effect while being used. So sniper rifle sounds like another pistol, except those number there prove it WRONG.

In addition, I mentioned Charging yes? after you "Act" (i.e shooting, using melee weapons, magic, sub magic) there is a short (or long) charging phase in which you can't use that button. Now when the charging is MAXED, there is a short sound effect to let you know that the action is "Ready"

Now there is 4 action and there is 4 similar sound effect (with different pitch) for each WHICH is also similar to picking up items sound. So I ended up mashing buttons for nothing sometimes (is that the sniper rifle OR the Sub weapon?). Then again this let me realize that sometimes you can attack twice because of a bug, so hooray.

Others
================
1. The bullet for Shotgun and Rifle is... similar? I have a hard time differentiating them.
2. S button is... too unloved. I didn't even try the other skills because heal dominates A button.
3, Projectiles would be nice (enemies attack) - maybe in the improved version?

Closing 4/5
================
In conclusion, I think that this game is neat, and well deserve a shot (wait..). It have some drawbacks, but still manageable. If you have some time to spare or like me, desperate for gaems, then, why not try this? It's short, simple and... fun*

Now if only Ocean will get to work on Paradise Blue Deux : Zwei......
OCEAAAAAAAAAN

*result may vary

The almighty message box is here to keep it PG-13

No, seriously, stop hiding the screens box! I can't see the enemies thereeee

Thanks for the review! I might try that hammer + whip combination sometime. Quite a bit was due to lack of time, but I'll see what I can fix. I'm getting ideas and I'll probably go ask for other feedback as well.

Do you think I should have removed the Heal skill outright and perhaps had more opportunities to heal, or was it something that was fine enough as an option and that I should just make the other skills more useful to compare?

In my opinion, the skill is fine. After all the only other viable option to heal in battle is through item pickup - which is limited and there is no storeable healing items in the game. Sometimes you just had a stroke of bad luck and take loads of damage due to positioning (or being trapped). That's when healing spell shines.

In addition, I find health-regaining system (outside of battle) a bit slow (and troublesome). There are 2 ways to do this :
1. Find barrels with Alcohol in it
2. Go to bar and pay for it

The problem is that both does not heal you fully (barrel is 1 time use only) so you are stuck with conserving health EVERY mission or just keep talking and talking again to the bartender (gets old).
(Or perhaps I just miss the explanation on how to heal other than get drunk?)

That is why, I think Healing spell is a nice touch.

I admit the other skills are also nice. Stealth basically allows you to go through the field unharmed (never tried it though) and slow is always a nice choice (berserk makes you...stronger?). These are good and I can see myself using them.

Sadly they override heal.. so... yeah. (I am a poor player I guess, I got hit a lot).
Look at those b..b..boobs..

I mean, um.. b..b..breasts..

Er I mean, b..b..bust..

I mean.. wow.
Dear Ocean,

I find it increasingly difficult to play the game because Adalyn's wonderful racks assets guns keeps distracting me from maneuvering the game properly.

I kindly ask that you would look into this persistent bug.
