Intro
"Marie Goes to Space" is a short, surreal game developed by ChuJooRi over the course of about three hours using flash. As for why this short game was created it was apparently part of the RMN 2011 Summer Games contest. A contest held back in August of 2011 that gave developers a month to build a game around the theme of surrealism. Albeit the rewards for participating in this contest weren't that impressive regardless if you won the event or were just a participant. At any rate "Marie Goes to Space" didn't manage to do well enough to place nor was it the runner up. As for it's exact placement I couldn't say since only the top four games are even listed on the contest page that can be found here.
Story
Summary
In this game the player takes on the role or Marie whose suddenly realized that summer is almost over and this causes her to go on a rampage where she grows to the size of Godzilla and then proceeds to slap a bunch of buildings out of existence.
Of course her ability to break stuff without touching things only proves her mastery of martial arts and more specifically the uraate technique from "Tenjou Tenge".
At any rate after destroying a bunch of buildings Marie decides she can no longer live in this world and attempts to launch herself into space with a giant slingshot. An idea that reminds me of that time Mythbusters tested the idea immigrants were using a giant slingshot in order to enter the country. At any rate after launching this 3D monstrosity towards the heavens and being given a score for our efforts the game sends us back to the first screen about summer quickly coming to an end.
Gameplay
On the gameplay front this game is comprised of two short mini-games that require you to move the mouse and left click in order to do a specified task. In the case of the first mini-game you just click on a bunch of tall buildings in order to quickly poof them out of existence and in the second game you need to get the mouse as close to the bottom of the screen as possible before left clicking in order to get Marie as high up as possible with an apparent maximum score of 2,763 being possible. Though why this score even matters is beyond me considering the game doesn't have a high score table.
Graphics
Visually this game isn't the ugliest thing I've ever seen. After all, I found it a lot harder to look at "Forum Command: The Attack of RMN3" by GameOverGames Productions. At the same time the main character is kind of ugly and feels out of place in the 2D world she appears to inhabit.
Sound
On the sound front the game plays a few "monster" sounds during the building mini-game. I'm guessing this was meant to be a nod to Godzilla and the like. In fact, this just makes me wonder why the developer didn't use the iconic Godzilla roar at the start of that mini-game.
Conclusion
The only saving grace "Marie Goes to Space" has going for it is that it is remarkable short. In fact, it's possible to beat this entire game in under 15 seconds if you don't care about your final score on the launching mini-game. After all, the points for that mini-game are a lot like the points in "Whose Line Is It Anyway?". As such, I really don't think this game is worth anyone's time unless they are looking for a short game to review.
