Not really Eternal, and pretty much average...

Hello players!
Now I'm reviewing Eternal Destiny, a RPG Maker VX Ace VERY CLASSIC fantasy rpg game made by Rose_Guardian in 2011. This was also a remake of the older RPG Maker VX version, anyway I checked the new, last one first.
The story is quite simple: we start with a couple of heroes, Sengal the Prince of Korsin and his best friend, Balagan a warrior and stereotypical womanizer investigating an old shrine after the order of the Queen. Unsurprisingly we will play as Sengal in a mission to save the reign from various menaces including evil nobles and a sadistic demon with the help of some friends met along the way. As I said in the beginning, it's all very classic!
Here's our valiant prince, the hero of this adventure!
The gameplay is pretty much what we've seen before in other party-based rpg games: Sengal and his group will have to fight monsters and travel to towns and cities to restock and prepare to tougher battles and bosses. And here it where I had the first problem: while there is the possibility to choose between six difficulty settings raging from Very Easy to Very Hard the enemies faced are very often damage sponges. Characters have each their set role, Balagan hits hard with his axe while Sengal is the team healer. Again, nothing really new or exciting, of course, the game uses the classic rpgmaker system with side view battles and special abilities that require the expenditure of Mana.
Visually the game is ok, I mean the first dungeon was obviously made with more attention to the detail compared to other areas, like the towns in any case there is nothing really bad (average towns for an average fantasy rpg), the only thing that really left me puzzled is the lack of interaction with the surroundings.
This is the world map, the world we'll have to save! Uhm pretty average with those squared forests, I think!
Unfortunately aside for some ugly maps (like the forest that consist in a handful of bushes and small trees or the blocky towns, there are also some mapping errors, like the weapon shop in the second town that has no exit door. Yes. And that means being stuck!
But there are also some really good aspects, for example I really liked the custom made art for the various characters, just look at these pictures. They're nice! Really well done. I also liked the music and the use of a quest system that includes secondary quests and tracks their progress. It's not just pretty useful but also something you rarely see in a classic rpgmaker game.
Unfortunately there are some aspects, like writing, that are just average and could have been much better, not just because there are lots of spelling errors, but also the whole plot isn't anything more than running errands for the Queen!
This last version of the game is also not completed, because after the second town there is a sudden and unespected boss battle, and then the team is pushed a ship and sent across the ocean to… do something, but the adventure (that was pretty linear so far) ends here!
NOOOO! Please! The Grape Gel Monsters nooooooo!!! And the review isn't finished yet!!!
Sooo this game is a demo? But wasn't it listed as completed? Well, no because the newest RPG Maker VX Ace version released in 2015 (and the default download from this page) is just a demo, but the old PG Maker VX version IS instead complete!
I didn't play it fully, but from what I've seen so far the game follows the same story, with a white haired Sengal (he hasn't the red hair of the remake!) and his friend Balagan being joined by various characters while they defend the reign from the evil aunt and other menaces. The game is more or less the same: average map without much interactions (there are merchants in town but they don't have a single line of dialogue!), a linear plot and lots of battles.
While the graphical aspect is a little worse than in the updated version (aside for the facesets, that are nice here too!) I liked combat a little more (there are some cool things like transformations), it's a little more balanced, and at a certain point you will find vitamins! These provides permanent boosts at 200 and later a single boss will drop 300,000 (not to mention the gold you have collected so far!)
This older version is a bit more rough but complete and I did not remember bugs... maybe I've still to find them since I've still to finish it. In any case... it's average!
Ohhh Sengal you look a bit different here! But you are always the hero of the realm!
Final Verdict
Eternal Destiny is a difficult game to judge: it's the first game made by the developer, and it shows. The older complete version is a bit rough but is complete and playable, the demo of the newer version besides being incomplete has also some bugs and worse combat... but has more custom assets and some nice art. For this reason I'd probably suggest to check the older version (because it has an ending!), however in both cases the writing is full of clichès and pretty average... like all the rest of the game. But if you like classic rpgmaker rpg game you may have some fun. In the end "average" was the term I used most during this review, so it's a 3/5 for the older VX version and 2.5/5 for the newer VX ACE demo.
That's all!
