Jumps a little too short

Darkened Light: Call of Glenn is a commercial indie game created with IG Maker. IG Maker is sort of like the black sheep of the Enterbrain family, so it's always interesting to see what sort of games you can play on it. Will this game be worth your money? Let's find out.

The controls are basic:

Arrow Keys = Movement
X = Attack (can press twice for combo)
Z = Jump (Can press mid air to jump further)
A = Special (with sword)
S = Other Special (you don't start the game with one)

I'm not very familiar with the IG Maker default resources, but the graphics in this game look nice enough. It is sort of going for a dark Castlevania theme, and in some aspects it pulls it off. In the music department there's absolutely nothing. Enjoy playing levels with no background music or sound effects. At the very least you could have put in a place holder. No sound makes this game duller and that's something that this game doesn't need.

That enemy is just going stand there I guess?

The game is broken up into combat and platforming. The combat actions are nice and fluid. Though the enemies the game presents to the player aren't exactly well designed. That zombie in the picture up above won't move until you're very close. This may make the enemy sound easier to deal with, but it turns out that being so close to the enemy when your hitting the attack button can actually cause you more damage. There was some small plant in the second level that I thought was just part of the grass at first. For some reason you can't kill that enemy. The most annoying aspect of the combat system is the ridiculous respawn mechanic. You leave the screen just a tad and the enemy will be back there.

The game also has a lot of platforms in the air that you'll need to jump to. Longer jumps will require you to use the mid air jump ability. I thought the normal jump could have been a tad bit more stronger. Also, some of the platforms are awkwardly arranged. You'll have some strange enemy placement on platforms. And you'll have platforms that are right above the platform you need to jump to (meaning you have to use a normal jump to get to it.)

See the bats. The only solution here is to try to double jump to the other side.

By no means is this demo the worst game I have ever played. There's some good mechanic ideas behind a lot of this stuff. But I feel there's a lot of stuff lacking from a demo that's trying to entice me into purchasing a product. Based on this play through I wouldn't recommend buying this game.
