This page is a work in progress.
For the most part, this is a PARTIAL LIST of systems ALREADY IMPLEMENTED.

Ilandrian Industry

Ilandria is a land of Industry (and Industries!) and for those willing to work hard, there is much opportunity to pry up wealth out of the ground, the water, and the rock with hoe, shovel, pick and pole.

Every Ilandrian industry can be broken down into three rough stages. Those stages are harvesting, processing, and crafting. Harvesting is the act of gathering RAW MATERIALS from the environment.

While hunting animals or slaying monsters and using their component parts IS harvesting, it should not be confused with merely walking into people's houses and taking things, or delving into dungeons, slaying the inhabitants, and walking off with their loot. The former is considered theft, and the latter called adventuring, but either way these practices are frowned upon in Ilandria.

HARVESTING

Harvesting in Ilandria takes many forms. Resources are divided into two basic kinds: renewable and non-renewable resources. Renewable resources are, in the long term, infinite. They will always grow back. Non-renewable resources are finite and will never come back; even if they seem plentiful, they must be used wisely.

* Logging is the harvesting of wood. An individual involved in Logging is called a Lumberjack. Logging requires a Wood Axe. Wood is used, among other things: to make wooden crafts, wooden weapons, and wooden shields. As a component in melee weapons. As an essential component in the work of a Bowyer. As an essential component in the work of a Fletcher. To make Kindling which can be used as fuel for a fire or to make lie. And several other applications.

* Mining is the harvesting of ore, economic rocks, and gems. An individual who spends their time mining is called a miner. Mining requires a Pickaxe. Ore is used, among other things, for the blacksmithing of all manner of weapons, armor, and jewelry, as well as creating arrowheads for fletching. Economic rock includes coal, used as fuel for all smelting and smithing, rock salt, which can be ground into salt for use in alchemy or cooking, and many others!

* Gathering is the harvesting of plants of all kinds! Most people who spend their time gathering plants are farmers, but some are alchemists. Because CODENAME: THE GREATEST GAME THAT EVER WAS OR WILL BE is not a Harvest Moon game, I don't mean farming. I mean collecting random plants that grow in the wild or are come through by guile now that would be STEALING! Gathered plants are generally either edible (and usable in cooking), usable in alchemy, or both. Some have several additional uses, like Wild Cotton, which can also be spun into thread or threshed into pulp to use for paper making.

* Fishing is the catching of freshwater and saltwater fish. To fish you'll need a fishing pole. A man who fishes is a fisherman, but being a fisherman and lumberjacking are both part of being a ranger. Fish can be used as alchemy and once cleaned, can be eaten or cooked into recipes.

* Hunting is the art of killing things to use their parts for stuff! Hunting is like fishing except the fish don't fight back! Hunting is an essential aprt of ranging. Hunting is done through the battle system. Parts from animals can be used for all kinds of things, once the animals are butchered. Meat can be eaten raw or cooked into recipes, fat can be used in alchemy or rendered to make tallow, and pelts and hides can be tanned into leather for armor making. And that's just the tip of the iceberg!

PROCESSING

Processing is essentially the act of turning a RAW MATERIAL into a COMPONENT which can be used in the final industrial activity, crafting.

* Woodworking is done at a Carpenter's Bench and a person who spends a lot of time doing it is called a Carpenter. At a Carpenter's Bench, you can turn Firewood (the basic unit of harvested wood) into Kindling (for burning) or Wooden Blocks (for crafting). You can also turn Wooden Blocks into various wooden objects, including wooden weapons and shields!

* Smelting is done at a Foundry and a person who spends a lot of time doing it is called a Blacksmith. At a Foundry, you turn raw ore into ingots of pure metal using coal as fuel. Ingots, in turn, are used in all kinds of blacksmithing.

* Weaving is the processing of fibers like Raw Cotton. A weaver turns fibers into thread using a Spindle and turns thread into fabric using a loom. Thread is used in clothesmaking, armor-making, and bowmaking. Fabric is used in clothesmaking, and as a trade good.

* Cleaning is the act of processing non-mammalian animals like fish. The obvious example would be cleaning and gutting a fish to get at its meat, but other non-mammalian animals can be processed, like extracting venom from a snake carcass. Cleaning is done in your kitchen.

* Threshing is an activity done by farmers, bakers, and alchemists. Thresing is taking a plant like Wheat or Maize and grinding it down into a grain to use in baking, or grinding a fiber like Wild Cotton into a pulp to use in paper-making.

* Butchering is the MESSY act of dividing a dead land animal (a carcass) into its component parts: meat, fat, and pelt or hide. For very small animals like bats, butchering and tanning can be done in one step. Butchering is done in your kitchen or by a professional butcher.

* Rendering is the process of turning animal fat into purified tallow, while Burning will turn kindling into lye. Crushing produces Salt from Rock Salt. All three can be done at the Alchemist's Workshop which differs from the Alchemist's Lab.

* Tanning is done by a tanner, and turns animal hides into useable leather. Tanning is done at a tanning rack.

CRAFTING

Although you can sell RAW MATERIALS and PROCESSED COMPONENTS, you may make more money by Crafting, the final step of any industrial cycle. Crafting is a combinatorial process that combines components into a final product that can be equipped, used, or sold as a trade good.

* Cooking is something everyone can do. Turn ingredients and condiments into an edible meal using a recipe. Fish, meat, and vegetables can all be cooked and cooking includes baking as well. Cooking is completed at a cookfire. You can start a using firewood and some kindling, but remember that your fire may go out over time. Someone who makes their primary income from cooking is a cook.

* Bow-making is the creation of bows and crossbows. Someone who does this is called a bowyer and this activity is done at a bowyer's workshop.

* Fletching is the creation of arrows and bolts. Someone who does this is called a fletcher and this activity is done at a fletcher's workshop.

* Alchemy is not a proper part of Ilandrian industry. Alchemy is unpredictable MAGIC! However, mundane Chymical processes can be performed at an Alchemist's Workshop. Besides processing events like rendering and lye-making described above, this also includes crafting activities like soap-making and paper-making, which create trade goods.

* Blacksmithing is done by blacksmiths at forges using metal ingots, coal as fuel, and other materials. There are three kinds of blacksmithing: weaponsmithing which is self-explanatory, armorsmithing which while mostly self-explanatory also includes shield-making, and general blacksmithing. General blacksmithing is used to produce jewelry, ornamental trade goods, and intermediate components like arrowheads and iron studs.

* Spellcraft will not be discussed at this time.

* Enchanting will not be discussed at this time.

BUYING AND SELLING

Of course, Ilandrian industry does not end in the craftsman's workshop. You may well need to buy raw materials, and you will certainly need to sell your finished goods! Merchants tend to have large supplies of gold on-hand, and will happily purchase whatever you may have to sell, no matter how irrelevant it may seem to their business. That is the good news. The bad news is that they are shrewd bargainers. You will need lots of practice at bartering in order to make the prices you receive competitive.

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I have to honestly admit I rarely enjoy crafting in games, as the actual acts of gathering and crafting tend to be pretty boring, even in games like Monster Hunter where crafting is practically the entire game. Hugeness helps a lot though, and this game's crafting definitely looks huge! The fun part of crafting, to me, is the discovery.

I am hoping that the act of acquiring resources and recipes is made into a fun sort of thing that involves discovery, instead of just giving the player new bundles of stuff after a few certain major plot events. If it feels boring, it will all just be a time-consuming means to an end, that end being getting gold to buy stuff that helps with the real gameplay. If it feels like there is stuff to do in the crafting system, though, I will be much more likely to go out of my way to complete the goals it provides.

To be honest, the processes described on this page are the real gameplay.
