Sacred Reviews: Top Gear Mini-RPG

"Top Gear Mini-RPG" is a very brief game developed by Wolfe using RPG Maker 2000 and was one of the entries in RMN's 5th Anniversary event. An event that gave people five hours to create a game meant to be a bad adaptation of movie, TV show, or comic. Though oddly enough the only bad aspect of this adaptation is the lack of crazy events that "Top Gear" is known for.

Instead of doing something truly insane like play a game of football with a giant beach ball. You instead pick a host and drive to an active volcano. And since your always the last person to head out. Your always the last person to find the volcano, but this is a good thing since the game effectively implies the other two hosts died in a volcanic eruption before you arrived. So I guess that means your favorite host gets to become the only host.

And that's all there really is to this game as far as the story and gameplay is concerned. The game is pretty forward in admitting this though.

At least the drive isn't as long and as awful as Desert Bus!

The only other aspects of this game to note are a few custom assets in the form of sprites meant to represents the hosts, some face sets pulled from either low quality photos or degraded by being shrunk to fit the requirements of the engine and a somewhat off attempt at recreating the theme. Though, I only knows it the theme because I read Kylaila's review. After all, I haven't sat down and watched an episode of "Top Gear" in over a decade and only watched it if I was trying to waste time. So I really don't have the theme song memorized. To make matters worse this is based on the UK version of the show so it stars different hosts than the US version I actually caught on the air a few times. So I really can't comment on the quality of the interactions between the hosts.

As far as this project goes overall, I'd say it's worth a look if your looking for a very short game to review. After all, it takes less than five minutes to beat this game and games made as fast as this one have a weird sort of charm to them. Though I suppose it's the kind of charm that surrounds a hairless cat.
