Progress Report

Hiatus & Explanation

Hi everyone!

So, Lantern is on Hiatus, but in my eyes, it's 90% complete. The main issues would be:

1) Remaining art assets, namely the character art & animations
2) A high level of polish so I can call this a "finished" game

My problem is that I don't have much time to finish that polish at the moment. I was interrupted by contract work (much-needed) and admittedly got caught up with other projects.
My other problem with Lantern is that it's a great idea, but it's multiplayer-only, and since it's unlikely that it would ever attract the audience needed for a sustained multiplayer community, it's pretty hard to actually play unless you set something up with friends. In that regards, it's more of a novelty - a fun novelty, but not one that's easy to play when you want to.

If I have a free week and the inspiration, I will sit down and finish Lantern. Until then, if you and some friends want to kick back and shoot each other in a haunted house, be my guest :) the game should always be on my website. If you do, please let me know what you think! I promise I'll read your thoughts.

Progress Report

Progress update! Also a prototype is available!

Hey everybody!

It's been a crazy week or two, between visiting the ladyfriend, going to a wedding, and losing power repeatedly, but I've got some news: I put up a prototype! There's still a bunch of bugs, but if you want to run around and shoot stuff in a haunted house, you can!

In the upcoming two weeks I'm going to try and address bugs and implement the final features. Afterwards I'll try and host a coordinated play-test session, so people can help playtest, play actual multiplayer, and give me design feedback :)

Play LANTERN here!

Controls:
  • Left-click: Fire pistol
  • F: Turn flashlight on/off (maybe should be right-click as well?)
  • Tab + hold: Show scoreboard & server name

Notes:
  • This game is multiplayer-only, so it's only gonna feel like a game if someone else is currently playing too :P You can get a feel for the light/dark mechanics and shooting, though
  • It's a browser version using Unity Web Player, so if you haven't yet, you'll need the Unity Web Player plugin

Buglist:
  • Latency in browser build – optimization needed, probably for shadows (this game is very shadow-heavy)
  • Cannot properly exit back to main menu from game
  • If the player acting as the server disconnects, game does not shut down nicely
  • Game-over not yet implemented
  • House needs a little more room and a few more balance tweaks; specifically, there should always be some small amount of light visible, so players can tell if they’re actually moving.
  • Gun can fire through some objects.
  • Still using the Unity pill model for characters
