I was thinking more along the lines of Ghost in the Shell at the time. It is my take on a simple "Barrier Maze."
My initial design was a straight up maze that you had to navigate with network "creepers" chasing you, and I might still use that in some sections.
Here each node connects to one other, and the Uplink Point (pictured in upper left as the ring hovering over the node) is randomly placed at one of the end points. The player has to navigate the nodes and reach the uplink point before the terminal times out.
Some of my other methods for representing data and certain security aspects are pretty much straight out of Shadowrun.
