A powerful earthquake within a range of mountains near the border of two nations has unearthed an ancient mystery. A tower emerges from the destruction, seemingly untouched as the earth around it crumbled. The Academy, a powerful organization of the Northlands, wishes to know its secrets. A team has been selected to investigate this tower and unlock the secrets that lie within.

  • Two main characters to choose from! Either choose the spearman Gerald, or his sister Brenda, the paladin.

  • Explore the Ancient Tower's 30+ maze-like floors while fighting monsters and collecting treasure along the way.

  • Charge into battle or sneak past enemies that are visible on the map. Random enemies, not random encounters!

  • Engage in classic 2D turn based combat using powerful techniques and other abilities like alchemy.

  • Navigate past deadly traps such as ground spikes and falling floors.

  • Discover the secrets of the Tower with collectible items and secret areas to explore.

  • Help the expedition's camp flourish! Invest in modest shops so they grow from stalls, to tents to full buildings!

Playable Characters:

  • Gerald: An agile warrior that uses the spear as a weapon. He is a recently graduated student of the Academy that got assigned to this mission due to his exceptional performance. He uses ice skills as well as shouts to improve ally stats.

  • Brenda: A sturdy swordswoman skilled with the sword and shield style of combat. She is a year older than her brother Gerald. During the year since her graduation she has gone on many missions and completed them beyond the Academy's expectations. She wields her faith as both a shield to heal and defend her allies as well as a weapon to smite evil. She uses water skills to heal enemies and strike her foes.

  • Harvey: A blacksmith from the nation of Midland. He wields a warhammer and specializes in fire attacks and roars to lower enemy stats. He is from the Midland expedition and is assigned to help with the Northland expedition.

  • Reynard: A student of the Academy who specializes in History and Alchemy. He wields a whip as his weapon of choice while also using Alchemy to destroy his foes. He is assigned to this expedition due to his exceptional performance in exams and knowledge of history, both famous and obscure. He uses Alchemy to attack with a variety of elements.

It's less about nostalgia and more about creating a game with bare basics and proving it can be fun without extensive graphics and huge gameplay feature lists. Taking it back to the basics. Also I prefer old school 2D RPGs. Hence why I'm making one. Make what you enjoy. But that's alright if you don't like it harmonic, my game isn't really intended for people like you.

Also: I originally made this as a simple project for NaGaDeMo and an 8bit RPG seemed the perfect idea to churn out in 30 days. People liked the prototype I had going, so I decided to pursue it to a full game. :)

People who aren't going into a game for all its graphics and features, and people who don't have 'the nostalgia bone."
I'm interested in the game, but I find myself in the same mindset for the most part. God HELP the person who wants to make the next featured final fantasy fangame and get 100+ subs on this site.
I'll mentally nerd rage. :D

I'm 30 years old, and was basically raised by Chrono Trigger, FF4, and FF6. My "Nostalgia bone" is practically arthritic right now. However, I'm also a veteran of the commercial rpgmaker game world, and am well aware of how much the "look, my low budget game is NOSTALGIA" card has been played to death.
I'm 26 and I've worked on AAA games (God of War, Uncharted). So I don't really see the point of your post. Yes nostalgia is done a lot in games. However I'm doing this as a personal challenge to push the NES standards to their potential (not reflected in current screenshots). If you don't like this type of game, that's fine. You're entitled to your opinion. However, this isn't the place for you to vent your frustration about nostalgia being overused in indie games. Take that to a discussion topic on the forums. If you wish to discuss ways to improve the game (while sticking to the aesthetic) that's greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

You take criticism of your game and deflect it by saying that I'm "venting frustrations." You will probably fool some people, but to me it's a very transparent attempt to protect yourself from criticism of this game.

You say it's "nostalgia", I say it's low quality. When you post your game for the public, expect criticism. You don't have to accept it, but when you try and deflect it like that, it looks bad.
Actually, I haven't deflected any constructive criticism. I've thanked people for it and have proceeded to make changes. All you've said is, "I don't like this type of game." Which is fine, but it's not relevant to me. I have no interest in catering to someone of your tastes if the idea of an 8bit RPG doesn't seem to appeal to you. To put it simply, if you don't like cake, then get out of my bakery. :) (I love food metaphors).

Actually, an 8-bit RPG does very much appeal to me. Kentona and others have done a great job trying to recreate the magic of early Dragon Quest-style games. That's nostalgia.

You tried pegging me as someone who just doesn't care for stuff like this, and you're wrong. That's the point.

As I've been told a million times, and rightfully so, this is commercial and should be held to a much higher standard.
What would really help is for you to release a demo or perhaps use the blog to discuss the finer details of your game in order to portray a clearer picture for constructive feedback. At the moment three screenshots and a barebones description isn't really useful. No offense but it's does come across as "just" another ace game but with 8-bit graphics. Then again, it's still early days to come to that conclusion.

On the topic of nostalgia, you do have to take in account that retro rpg's are a hot favorite for indie developers. And making the choice of diving into that particular genre, you do have the risk of being drown out by every other game if there is nothing special about it. It is 2012 after all :P

Already released a demo in July for NaGaDeMo, but it doesn't reflect the current state of the game at all (it was a prototype at the time). Folks really enjoyed it however, so I plan on finishing it. I will release an updated version of the demo and include it when it is complete. As for now, I'm just looking for feedback on what I've shared. I have received some good feedback (and some not so good ;p ), so I'm going to wait until I've actually finished making the changes based on that feedback before I update this further.

As for being drowned out, not really something I'm concerned with. Some people enjoy my game, and others felt that the finished product would be worth buying, and encouraged me to sell it. So I will. My main priority here is to make a good game.
Oh well... graphics, retro style, whatever. That's your taste, or in this case since it's commercial, your personal bet to mass domination (?). If all is coherent enough it will be fine whatever you throw in there.

For these kind of games, more if they're story driven, we need to get our hands wet on a demo to know how the story is going to be told.

You make a game, make it interesting, make a deep story or a great gameplay (or both) and you'll get money if you have a good trailer and/or ads. Just make sure that your game is legally clean.

Asdee ef.
I gotta say Reynardfrost, you're dealing with all the hate and asinine bull-crap of people WAY better than i ever could.
The only way i can cope is to tell myself "they're just jealous and so they're starting crap with me" and it helps me move forward.

For every jerk, their is someone who likes what you're doing and won't be a nitpicking ass.

So i'm here to say, i love what you're doing, keep going with it.. and keep on ignoring the haters.. it's all they know how to do.

Not sure where any of the so-called "haters" are, MarkusT.

As far as I can tell, everyone simply pointed out an obvious rip in a commercial game (read: plagiarism) that could actually land ReynardFrost and possibly RMN in legal trouble. That being called out should be and has been appreciated by Reynard, though I don't think removing that screenshot/image was the best course of action; it resulted in the entire fiasco making a bad case for the game and Reynard than the rip already did.

Regarding the rest of the comments, it's all relatively calm banter about game devs making games "for nostalgia" and how that attitude might not necessarily be a good one to have as a game dev. Reynard and Harm obviously disagree in their views but neither really ragged on the other, though I do think Reynard making assumptions of Harm's character was a bad call on his part; one should always strive to debate against the points of discussion, not against one's character.

So... nice trolling and asskissing I guess, my good sir?

P.S. "There", not "their".

I'm not speaking of that.. i'm speaking of other things... i was avoiding being specific.
And there has to do with places not people, i was correct in my spelling.
All i know is if it was me, i would be freaking the hell out on people, he's been way calmer than i ever could be, and i salute him for that.
Only troll i have seen thus far is you for bothering to comment my comment and call me an ass-kisser.
haters are a people, too!
All i know, is i have similar projects i'm working on.. well similar graphically, i don't go with the high res stuff either.
I tend to go for lower res looking graphics myself, not for nostalgia's sake, but because it's a bit easier to work with, and takes less time than the higher res stuff.
I already tried doing higher res stuff, and it is not only VERY time consuming, but i'm bad about using black outlines and some people like to complain about silly stuff like that.
I like this game cause it kinda reminds me of.. maybe a better version of FF: Mystic Quest, that or maybe slightly similar to the original Phantasy Star series.

Also, this is not the first game i have seen using graphics kinda like this, i mean the same things can be said for pretty much every RM2K and 2K3 game that's ever been made.
Also, i can't see this game being sold because of anything that would be ripped and edited... but i could still see it being made and put out for people to enjoy. Again, i don't think i ever see these kind of statements when it comes to 2K and 2K3 games made.
Mostly because 2k and 2k3 were limited to 256 colours, where-as VXPA (lawl) aren't.

I don't mind either way as long as the graphics match well enough and the story/characters are good. It was just that in the case of a game being sold, there is an expectation of 'better than free'... and there are a LOT of awesome free games on the makers, so...

This is true.. no i can't see it being sold.. i mean i seen this one game that looked horrible on kickstarter.. it was an RPG.. i tried to get this guy to sell me on the idea of this game before i donated to him right, and so i was like "i could make something much better looking in RPG maker" wow.. i got torn up by the guy working on it...rather than him go "wait till you see it in motion" cause all he had was screen shots... he got mad..

So i can see why this game could not be sold.. i don't too many would buy it.. that's not to say no one would... but.. yeah.
I seen another game being made that is 8 bit looking and is going to be sold.. but it's a plat-former.... so i still think their is a place for 8 bit stuff.. an audience.. but.. maybe not a huge one.
Don't get me wrong, I think 8-bit games have a place in sales, they just need to be very polished in order to do so. Hell, if kentona could sell Hero's Realm legally, and did so, I'd be down to buy. Same with Paradise Blue - there are great 8-bit games out there that would be worth some money, it's just that the ones that are being sold are usually not as awesome as the free-to-play ones.
This one? I think with enough effort put into it it would be worth something. It has some charm to it, it just needs to be careful not to accidentally fall into copyright issues.
