You can use "are"...But maybe "aren't" would be better?
I don't know, both are alright to use, but given the situation maybe
"aren't" would be better...

It's less of an offer to sit down and more of a query as to whether he's going to stand instead, so I felt 'are' was the better of the two.

I guess it would also totally depend on the character. While one person might say "aren't you", another "are you", another "you gunna"... people don't talk good words all the time. :P
