Introduction

I'm Jeffrey Nordin and over the past year I made this game, The Logomancer. I've always wanted to make video games, so I finally decided to do it. I quit my job and moved to Seattle after completing the game in the hopes that it can be used as a resume to get me a job in game development. The Logomancer ended up being very a personal story and a lot of my own neuroses, insecurities, hopes, and philosophies are in the game. Write what you know, as they say.

The game should take around 10 hours to complete.

Game Overview and Plot Outline

The Logomancer is a JRPG without killing. Conflicts are resolved through argumentation, logical discourse and persuasive speech. Mastering the elements of rhetoric will allow you to make your point to even the most stubborn audience. The people you meet are your 'weapons' and the skills they teach your 'magic'. Why not befriend an old editor and learn about the power of Proofreading? Or assist a schizophasic blacksmith to learn how to Doublespeak?

In the world of the Logomancer, everyone is connected to a communal dreamworld known as the Mindscape. During sleep, everyone interacts together inside this strange mental world. The mind is a powerful tool in the world of dreams and the few exceptional individuals with the ability to build dreamworlds for others to participate in are called Logomancers.

Ardus Sheridan and his apprentice John Marrow are negotiators for the dream commodities company Powell-Mercer and have been sent to the seaside city of Ordolus in order to finalize a contract with the region's most recently discovered logomancer, Glenton Dahl. The story starts there as the duo reaches the city limits. What is the nature of the dreamworld that everyone is connected to? What is the true nature of logomancy? Is the emotion felt for a fictional character different from the emotion felt for a real person? Did the ancient peoples of Callosum like slow-roasted brisket? Play the game to find out the answers!

Using the classical elements of persuasion, social interactions become rhetorical battles. A 'boss fight' could just be trying to convince a store owner to give you a new suit free of charge. This means that stats like 'persuasion', 'confidence', and 'elocution' are much more important than 'strength', 'dexterity', or 'magic attack'. If you've ever wanted to play a Final Fantasy 6-styled JRPG wherein you could improve your characters' Perspicacity, then this game is probably for you.

Influences

The Logomancer draws inspiration from the following sources, so if any of these pique your interest, there's a good chance there's something for you in this game: The Lost Room, Inception, Dark Souls, Final Fantasy 6, Persona 4, House of Leaves, Silent Hill 2, and the music of two DTs - Dream Theater and Dark Tranquillity.

Okay here's probably a simple question: how do you get rid of the incoherent state? The one that decreases persuasion? Besides cooking, of course.
You can dispel debuffs with the corresponding buffs, so Bravado cancels incoherent, Tongue Twister cancels malaise, etc. It makes logical sense (I guess), but it's not something I've seen in other RPGs and the game doesn't tell you anywhere, so it's rather unclear.

A much easier method is to use fish fillets, which remove all negative states. You can get them from the southeast merchant in the bazaar; he's the only one who sells something that's actually useful!
Can someone explain to me the riddle in the water cave? I know there are some explanations at the previous pages but they don't help much.

I found myself enough information to explain the 0005 and the 0017 but I don't understand what the different parts of 1098 mean(which I need to build decode the other pic which is the key).

1098 seems to have totally different parts where some of the horizontal lines are longer(that thing which is 100, 200, 300, 400 seems different) and it seems 2 or more parts are at the same end of the diamond but?

What I found out is:
The symbol which means 10, 20, 30, 40 in a system with 4 different numbers is converted to 5, 10, 15, 20(depending on position) and the 1, 2, 3, 4 stay like this.

But I don't know what to do with the others(x00 and x000) because I can't understand the 1098 picture.

Edit: Wait I totally forgot at the test chest to add more than one at the same direction to see how they add up together. Need to test this first then I might be able to solve it.

This actually is a good and interesting riddle. I like riddles like this. Not too hard not too easy and all the info in one place.

Not the only one. Another merchant sells something which figures into an optional sidequest.

It's possible to decode the system without the 1098 figure, but it might help to know that that figure is actually a mistake.
Yeah you don't need to decode that figure. The passcode is all different digits so it's actually fairly simple.

That puzzle is a roadblock for a lot of people. You can see hints and answers on the previous page of comments, I believe.
Thanks I figured it out now. Main problem were the combined symbols(if for example you use "upwards" more than once at the test chest). I forgot to try these to see how the different things look together(longer horizontal lines).

Also I only knew (000)1 -> 1 and (00)10 -> 5 (from the test chest input) which I first thought was random and I had to guess the others but then I understood it with the Quinary already mentioned at one of the previous page of comments. Just used 100 -> 25, 1000 -> 125 and 10000 -> 625 then and with the directions they are placed I could calculate the solution.

I also now understand that I could just have used it as a 5 digit base-5 number and then converted it(like already explained in the comments) without having to "build" it.
Do I need to answer the question of that giant about the steps in the lighthouse?
I did not find the answer. It said something about "crowns" and there was another giant nearby and I answerd his question and then all the giants disappeared and I could not answer the other question anymore.

Also at the giant up the hill at the north east town the characters said we would need another giant to get up there but later I was just able to talk to him while standing next to the hill when he also was next to the hill.
One of the labels on the map contains the word "crowns", you have to press the interact button there and you'll get a hint about the steps.

If you could talk to the hill giant without building the staircase, I'm pretty sure that's a bug! What's supposed to happen is

you're supposed to solve the puzzle of how many steps the carpenter built and use that to answer his question, at which point he'll build a staircase to help you reach the last giant. Talking to that giant can then help you solve the guardians' puzzle, which advances the quest and which it seems you've already solved.
Okay. Already considered this first.
But I did not try because after the puzzle in the cave I thought this would be to easy - just randomly try to to press enter near the word "crown".

Now I'm at the next annoying puzzle in the haunted mansion in the 2nd part with the confusion room with Cynthia.

And I'll stop playing here. Just don't like these and it will take too much time to do this. I just don't like these kind of maps where you can walk in one direction endlessly. Can't remember the whole map and would need to draw a sketch which is a pain with maps that are set up like this and that big.

I guess there are more annoying puzzles later in the game? Thought the one in the cave already was the worst after reading the comments here. Too bad but I'll stop playing cause it seems it will continue like this.

The only one that was good and easy was the one with the hats. Liked this because it was all on one screen. Not much walking around for hours. And it was not too hard(solved in a few minutes). Since I want to progress the main story I don't want to puzzles to take too much time which is annoying cause I don't want to skip and miss stuff.

Still haven't even progressed the main quest ...

But the graphics and the idea with the combat without killing and the combat system and the items that cost nothing are nice.
@Luthan
You'll see a note where there are a bunch of codes. That's actually the symbols of the carpet, and you need to follow them in order (and also click the corresponding items that gives a bell-chime sound).

You don't really need to do the 'annoying' puzzles if you don't like to and just go straight for the Forgotten Plantation quest. However, if you're not just in a hurry to complete the game for the sake of completing a game, then you need to do the other quests in order to get the true ending.
I "need" to to all the quests and discover all hidden items. That's just my style of playing because I want to see all interesting dialogue and you never know if theres is somewhere some hidden optional item that affects the story later(like with differend endings where you need certain items).

Also I always try to do all possible side quests first before advancing the main quest because you never know when the main quest will send you somewhere you can't get back from to do other side quests. Already bad for me here because I got Cynthia late and it seems she did not automatically level to 3 while the others are 3 already from doing some side quests. Developers should take this into account. I think there are a lot of other people playing like this.

Also in the mansion first part there was some "left eye of greed" hidden behind a door and I think you could miss it(I first advanced without getting it and then reloaded and got it). I don't think you can get to that first part later in case you missed this? Permanently missable stuff is bad especially with items that seem unique like this. Not a problem with potions or basic armor(without special affects) you can buy at shops.

I might try later or in a few days. Just need a break. And often later it is easier If I already did a lot of side quests first and then doing the main quest and later only a few other new side quests to do(I advanced the ones with higher levels already a bit so I can finish them faster later) ...

It would help if someone could tell me if there is some stuff I can miss in the 2nd part of the mansion with the confusion room(like the left eye of greed in the first part where you could advance without it). Because then I really would have to check every room which takes a lot longer to make sure you did not miss a room at maps with such confusing setup.

The Left Eye of Greed is not permanently missable. It's a plot significant item, and none of the plot significant items can be missed. To the best of my knowledge, none of the items in the game are permanently missable, but I do not know this for certain.
Alright, I managed to complete the game (with the true end, of course)! But there's just one more thing I want to do in this game before I end it off on a high note...

Where is the Final Horizon?
Outside the armory. Check the boulder in the top-left corner there, too.

And don't worry, Luthan, nothing's missable. (There is the plot twist in Winthgraden Tower, but its effect is cosmetic and if you get it after clearing the area Ardus will still explain it to you. I'd classify it more as a replay bonus rather than a vital, missable item.) You can revisit the first area after completing that quest, and there's nothing in the other sections. I'm also pretty sure that's the last in-depth puzzle; there's sort of one in the true end path and I'd recommend checking the TV Tropes page or something for the solution because it's nigh-impossible if you haven't solved another puzzle you aren't given any hints for anywhere.
Oh well, the bonus boss was just too easy even without the ultimate skills...But it's been fun :)

Now, the only secrets I haven't checked yet or are not so sure of that I've read in TVtropes are:

1) Secret shop after beating Eventide and Final Horizon
2) Golden ending (I'll probably look into that another time)
3) The Composer's lessons (I didn't know the Composer gives lessons until now. So, how do I meet the Composer to get his lessons?)
4) Indentation in the boulder (not sure what is the indentation I'm supposed to be looking for ~ ~)

Otherwise, it's been a fun game. I just wish the game could have been more in depth. Initially, I thought there would be a new map when I entered New Cadence. But turns out that is the ending...
I thought there would be a new map when I entered New Cadence. But turns out that is the ending...

Ha, me too! Maybe in a future story...

When you say you beat the bonus boss, which one do you mean? Eve Angelus, I presume? There's another one. If you beat Eve Angelus you have what you need to get past the boulder.

And the "golden ending" mentioned on TV Tropes is just the true ending. If you beat the final boss you've seen it.

Oh, haha oops, I mistook Eve Angelus for Eventide the lady shopkeeper ~ ~. I actually beat the Final Horizon. So, erm...Where's Eve Angelus, then?

Hat puzzle.

I don't get it, though. I solved the hat puzzle, then got the Weather Totem. Then what do I do? Am I supposed to cast the rain to summon Eve? If so, how do I go about doing that?
