Sacred Reviews: The Story Generator

"The Story Generator" is less of a game and more of a resource for others to use that was created by OokamiKasumi using Renpy. The purpose of this resource is to take a few inputs from people such as setting, genre, writing style, and genders of the major characters and turn that into a simple, generic story a person can use as a basis for building their own game's narrative around. Though I did find the tool's ability to make stories within the same genre and selected focus on romance involving female leads, love interests, best friends, and villains rather lacking. This is because both times I setup a story along those lines they came out rather similar to one another. The only major changes were where their romantic moments took place and their professions for the most part. Though, I suppose that's probably because the game tends to present characters as pretty blank canvasses beyond a basic description that ties into their job such as bookbinder or magical girl that wears a mini-skirt. After all this is meant to be a resource to give people ideas to build upon.

So it probably shouldn't come as a surprise that the stories while drawing from a pool of options have to be drawing in text that fits within the confines of a few prewritten lines at the very least. So you end up with a resource that feels like your going through one of those fill in the blank stories where they ask for words of a certain type like verb, adjective, and so on.

As for how useful this tool is. I really can't say. After all, when I do tend to do anything that involves writing it's either writing out a video schedule that is near impossible to follow or jotting down a few lines of poetry every now and again. So I really can't say how useful this tool is as a writing prompt for those actually write stories. I know at least one person claimed it would be useful in the game's summary page, but if others have found it useful I couldn't say.

This thing is really good and useful! Thanks!
You did a great job! This thing is great source of writing ideas!

As far as the music and visual presentation goes. The music is nice, but is sometimes a bit of a rough fit to the setting and genre selected in my opinion. And on the presentation side of things the game is largely just a wall of text with a few images, but considering the stories here are built like mad libs that probably shouldn't come as a surprise. I suppose it's worth a quick look if you got a few minutes and might be a bit more helpful then some other writing prompts you can find online. Though, I'll admit some of those might be more fun in some cases since they tend to be a lot more random in terms of the ideas offered like writing a story about a cowboy that hasn't laughed in a long time teaming up with an Ogre that loves to read books in order to put a stop to an evil person on the leadership council of a small town.
