All aboard the Hell express!

Intro

Densha Soul is a pretty nice horror/puzzle game by mightydarkchocolate. The puzzles are quite well designed and interesting, the atmosphere is done very well, however the story has some logical flaws in it.

Presentation

The game takes place in a haunted train station (and on a train), and the environment is done very well. The train station is deserted (almost), there are ghosts lurking around, and the scenery sometimes changes slightly depending on the actions you take. The game doesn't use many real "jump scares", however there are some startling moments (such as when enemies appear suddenly, or when you're walking down a hall and words appear on the wall)

The suddenly appearing or changing things effectively creates the atmosphere in the game - it makes it feel like it's actually a normal place that was haunted, and I think the maker did this very well.

The story was alright, but I found some problems with it. The story revolves around the fact that the main character does not know that the train station is haunted, but every clue in the game that you find goes against this. There are scenery changes that she notices (for example windows and plates spontaneously breaking), the train you're boarding is #666, there are several very non-subtle clues in the dialog and sign text that it's not normal (calls it her last voyage, etc...), and the fact that you have to collect fake money scattered around the train station to pay them with.

The ghosts are supposed to be completely invisible to her, and I can accept that, but it seems that even with this being so you would have to be extremely unobservant to miss all the clues. Yet she still acts completely surprised when it's revealed that it's haunted.

There are frequent grammatical errors, however they do not impede comprehension, so I won't hold that against it.

Gameplay

The puzzles aren't very confusing at first (the game leads you pretty well), but they're still involved puzzles. The game is primarily exploring, finding things, and then putting the pieces together to solve whatever it is you need to do. The puzzles generally have multiple parts to them (for example or one, you need to obtain an item, use it to get another item, flip a switch, and then use the ventilation to dry your item)

The difficulty growth of the puzzles is well done. They start out quite straightforward, but at the end they are really quite difficult o figure out.

In many ways the hardest part of the puzzles is keeping everything in your mind that you find. You might find the beginning of several puzzles before you even finish one, and remembering what you must do and not mixing up the puzzles is somewhat difficult.

It may seem that at first, the enemies don't pose any threat, but that will change later on. The enemies in this game either kill you instantly or severely slow you (healable with Med-Kits) so that something else can kill you.

Summary

Overall, I liked the puzzles and the atmosphere in this game a lot. They're fitting and very well designed. The story, in my opinion, has some logical flaws. I would still recommend giving it a try, though! 4/5.
