Welcome HOME, dear puppeteer.

This world has been waiting some time for your arrival. The tables
of balance has been turned, and the fate of the world trusted
into a familiar face. The guardian of zone 0 himself, The Judge. Your job is to lead him on a new journey, masterful puppeteer.

This world is wrapped in an enigma, a shroud of confusion overlapped the
once peaceful zones. The true guardian of zone 0 himself has the very marrow
of his bones rattled with the feelings of Deja Vu. The day that he would become the marionette of the new world is coming, and upon your very arrival the world will undergo otherworldly changes.

Just what is going on in this world? Why has the switch been reset? Has The Judge forgotten everything that happened? Has the world been reversed to a state of pristine ignorance? Only you can find out, fateful puppeteer. You will travel the world, and meet the guardians you know so well. However, you will face enemies and foes unlike anything you've imagined. New allies will join your side, and new personalities will be explored. New places will be visited, a zone that defies the logic and reason of the world you know. Puzzles that expand beyond the game and into our world. You will become one with your puppet, and in your combined state you will bring the land to the closure it deserves. The fate, and the direction of that closure however, is up to the decisions you make. Choose wisely my friend, its up to you to save their HOME.

HOME is a non-canonical fangame created with the permission of Mortis Ghosts, the creator of OFF - the game from which HOME was inspired. You take control of The Judge in this project, and see the world through his eyes.

New characters and enemies are introduced in this story, with a combat system that's more threatening and challenging than OFF's style. HOME makes uses of the elements and status effect system and stretches is as far as possible. It's recommended you play Mortis Ghosts "OFF" before you touch this project, as this game and its entirety is connected and continued after OFF. Playing HOME without first playing OFF will not only lead to spoilers but will lead you to a path of confusion and detachment from the entire world.

The game features custom sprites, music, icons, sound effects, and battle animations. It uses as much fresh resources where and whenever possible.

In Memoriam

It is incredibly sad to have to break this news to those who may not know of it as yet, but the creator of this game, TheJudge, passed away recently.

As such we, the staff of RMN, are posting this blog informing all who knew him and enjoyed his games (both in the past and the future) of this tragedy.

Too soon we have lost another comrade to that final rest. May you remain forever in our hearts, Judge.

Rest in Peace

Hm, okay. And thanks for the library card hint, I had forgotten about that.

Zacharie's mask is NOT Valerie. Very huge misconception and Zacharie would never use his friends brother's face as a mask.
Ah, okay. It was a fan-theory I heard, is all.

I can't remove random encounters. I'm uncertain why that's brought up.
Well, you say that one of your motives/design philosophies is to focus more on the gameplay since OFF's was so wonky, yes? The random encounters were one of the biggest complaints I've seen from OFF players since random encounters are a universally terrible mechanic. The only saving grace was that they were so easy that you could just auto through all of them, but you seem to be changing that so now they're going to be even more time-consuming. If I were to "fix" some of the problems in OFF, that would probably be the first thing I'd change - but it would be a lot of work, yes. (Theoretically, you could make only a few, abstract sprites like in The Way or The Logomancer instead of making sprites for every monster, but it might not work with the way the areas are set up, regardless.)

If nothing else though, you should really, really remove the ones during the card puzzle in the library. They are absolutely infuriating.

As with elsen dialogue and such, It's not going to feel the same because it's not written by the same person.
Well yes, but that's the occupational hazard of writing fanfiction. It's difficult because your work will inevitably be compared to the original, and you may have to write in a different style from your own to maintain consistency, otherwise the audience may be jarred out of the experience. I mean it's not that divergent from the original elsen dialogue, and I am notoriously nitpicky, but it's something I noticed, is all.

Yea. Now that you think about it, after that point I removed encounters from all puzzle rooms because I realized no one liked monster encounter and puzzles. Only in very specific places do they really exist. (Zone 3 factories) but other than that the further into the game you go, the less puzzle maps have random encounters. I probably should remove them from the library floor considering how much walking you have to do in that area. AT first they existed because people were underleveled and I needed to kind of "force" exp onto the players. Now that I've balanced things out more this isn't really necessary. I guess if I though of it from the beginning I would've used sprite encounters similar to Mystic Quest, but I feel like they would just be out of place. Back to the butcher. I wanted a more of a "raw horror" aspect added. Generally elsen were the ones getting attacked and I wanted to add a burnt that was more devious than confused. I wanted the judge to see and witnesses horrible things. So far the effect has been great and someone loved the butcher enough to create an RP blog about him xD. The sprite having its head isn't that uncommon though. Pastel burnts had their heads pulled forward, and critical burnt still showed its mouth and eyes, its all about design choice. I wanted to make the postal service a bit more straightforward, so I'm sorry if it displeased you. The puzzles get more interesting as the game goes on and my knowledge and ideas grew. As for equipment being actual armor. Coats wasn't supposed to be an actual fur coat. The artist when I gave them the list of items drew it like that. It's more supposed to be like a coat of paint, but with ideas. That's why loyal coat was supposed to represent the aspect of loyalty coated over the character, but the idea is really lost in the sprite. The collar was just, eh. The batter had tunics, might as well give the cats collars. And auras I believe were add-on specific? Not sure. Color I replaced with sound. The batter's appearance is never supposed to really be logical, just eventful. It throws people off as no one expects the batter to be up there, but it seemed to have a negative effect on you. After Pablo fights a guardian, they're reverted back to their state that they're seen in the Room. The tall mister, big mister, and the small bird. Contradictory to the themes of OFF, I couldn't just have the player kill Dedan. That would be following in the exact plot of OFF. I needed to diverge.

To me it feels like you're analyzing things as if they're supposed to make sense. You're not allowing yourself to get absorbed in the world. You seem to have a clear defined cut idea of how the world of OFF is supposed to be, and anything that derives from such throws you off. I think RPG and games are fun and if HOME isn't really fun for you I don't want you to force yourself through it. I want to give in new aspects and new ideas and new concepts, I want people to feel a different world. It's going to diverge, its going to feel very different and it won't really feel like OFF at all by the point you reach Zone 4. I'm uncertain if you'll have any fun making your venture to that point with how I think you'll interpret these next coming scenes. I understand you're giving your criticism. I'm just worried you're playing through HOME just for the sake of it and not actually having any fun/have any intentions of having fun. I have taken your criticism, and fixed what bugs you've brought to my attention and I thank you for that, and removed the encounters from the Zone 2 location. I in fact just updated the download and all newer versions will be encounter free in that location.

*edit* Now that its morning time I apologize for any rudeness or angry tone within this message. ; o; I do appreciate your feedback and you're doing your job as a critic and player by giving your opinion.

*edit2*
I've taken your advice, and the Batter now comes in shortly behind The Judge, as The Judge takes cover behind some boxes on the right, with the batter coming in shortly after. This should make the event feel natural with the batter being "one step behind" The Judge. I changed the elsen dialogue in the postal service, that was simply an error on my part and I forgot to change his dialogue too. It is now changed. :3
Possible bug? Before you defeat Dedan, or enter his office, really, there's a notice saying that there's a hidden item... I tried everywhere to find it and it did not appear.

Battle animation doesn't exist? That's a new bug for sure. Let me check it out, sorry I've been busy with stuff all day and just now sitting down to check RPGmaker.net.

That's fine, I redownloaded the game a few hours ago when I saw that you made edits, I'm sure you've been hard at work and despite the flaws, I'm really liking this.

That's fine. Did you play any previous versions of HOME? Did you play version 0.5.0 and are just now updating? Versions 0.5.0 had a bug that crashed the game whenever you ran into an encounter if you loaded a save into 0.6.0. This was due to me changing the "item map" of the game, and items got mixed and tossed around, causing errors all over. It was for the better in terms of inventory and shop management. I just tested the battle and didn't get a single "battle animation doesn't exist." Before you battle, check and make sure any of the cats have "orbs" equipped. Any form of orb or any item that isn't claw/fang. That can happen from transferring saves. I'll try and make a fix that purely fixes the batters equipment though, if his equipment is causing the bug.
The version I was playing says that it is Beta 0.8.0, I downloaded it on 05/31.

Anyways, I tried again and it said "Event script referenced a battle animation that does not exist"

If you have an ORB in your weapon slot, its going to crash the game. Make sure you DON'T have an orb there. I think I know what's going on though, and I'm uploading a fix right now. Honestly there was no way for me to know that this would break save files if they had a specific starting point. Try downloading it again it again. I just made the game force change the batters equipment as I think when I made some changes to the item map they messed with the batters stats even though he wasn't "in" the party. I'm guessing characters starting equipment is "locked in" when you start a game, and the batter probably had invalid items in his weapon slot due to me forgetting that items are locked in on start, and not when a character is actually added to the party. Because, if I run a fresh new save and testplay that point, it doesn't crash for me. Anyways, the update just finished uploading and I hope this works.
I did not have the zodiac orbs in my weapons slot, thankfully. I had the month special items, though.
Anyways, I downloaded the new one, and it starts off (as in it starts the video, no home screen or New Game/Load Game options) with a skewed scene of Japhet lecturing the Elsens (it's panned to the top right of the map), with The Judge appearing behind the cluster of Elsens, then The Judge's dialogue of needing to help The Batter. When the circle of spectres appear, The Judge is immediately outside of it and can enter battle with the spectres. I go into Battle Time with The Batter, The Judge, and Alpha. It's an auto battle (I selected engage over auto) that I have no control over and the Judge is immediately killed, as he has only 143 HP (my save has him at ~500-600). Thus, I have no clue whether I can control The Judge here or not. Anyways, they all get killed off pretty quickly and the entire thing repeats itself. This happens with or without the save files, the game does not appear to be utilizing them anyways. I even redownloaded it, alas... the same.
Edit: After a number of tries, I was able to control a single move by The Judge.

HahHAHA. God damn it, this is why I'm not supposed to try and fix my game at night without any sleep. I forgot to replace the starting position to the splash screen location. Let me fix that. I'm really not the most organized person, and things have been pretty stressful IRL so I'm scattered on time to fix things so I kind of rushed things lately with what spare time I had. When things in this household were relaxed the releases were much more stable. I really am terribly sorry. I promise I'm normally not this clumsy with my releases. I really should take a step back and relax and take things slower. My mental health isn't the best right now and I should probably take a break from the project for about a week, after I get a stable release out.

Do whatever you feel that you need. Anyways, this is a bit of a freak bug, but
after The Batter tosses you over the barricade in the library, I interacted with the button on the bookshelf, took a few steps, and entered a battle which promptly crashed due to a nonexistent battle animation. Interestingly, I tried again and I entered a battle before interacting with the bookshelf, and it was fine. After that, I entered the next area, entered a random battle, and encountered the same notification. There seems to be some correlation between the bookshelf and the random battles. I checked The Batters equipment when he is part of the party, and he only has a January equipped. Perhaps this has something to do with the Book I purchased from the Elsen merchant?

The Batter should have more than a January equipped. That's the bug that's crashing the game. Ugh, I forgot that version of the batter would ALSO be effected. Well, let me failsafe his equipment also. Save data can do weird things and can cause risky bugs such as this one. Though, having a few bugs here and there is better than making people start over, because I can fix these bugs with different failsafe methods.

Hey there, hate to be a nag (I'm aware I've been posting here... a lot... but I have a question about one of the puzzles...
the Zone 4 color puzzle... I I have the 6 computers w 6 different colors... each zone in The Nothingness has a different color, as does the actual zone (the terrain). I'm visiting the computers in the order I visited the zones (except 4... because there is no red computer.. I guess) for both the terrain and on the travel map...is that right? nothing is happening, and I read the books. And if it is for the terrain, the terrain changes colours...Zone 2 is blue on the map, pink outside, and blue in the library... I've tried different patterns and none seem to work.

Just played through the current build, loved it. This is the only OFF fangame I've played that I thought really felt like the original OFF. Music probably was my favorite part. Would it be possible to make a list like there is here to tell which music is played where?

After HOME is finished me and LightingWolf (lead composer) will be putting together an OST upload that will include remixes, and songs that didn't make it in the game. Along with that, a text document that will be like that soundtrack list.

Ok, makes sense you would do it when it's done. Just might I ask if it will include all the songs in the files along with the extra ones or include just some of them like the original OFF did?
