I don't want to be a good girl

Dear Red is a “Psycholocial Horror” game created by Sanggameboy for RPG Maker VX Ace. Dear Red is quite a short game, but has multiple endings. The choices you make are important and the game encourges to play through it multiple times to try to understand the story as much as possible.

Dear Red focuses most of its game play on story. So let’s discuss the premise of the game. You play as Red. Your mother was murdered when you were a young child. You find out who murdered your mother and embark on a mission to kill him.

(Red has one goal in this game.)

Dear Red gives the player a series of choices to make when playing the game. These choices determine the branch the game will take. Some branches are short and don’t reveal any information. If you want to uncover the story you will need to try to find the good branches to reveal the most information. I played the game several times myself trying to uncover why the man killed Red’s mother. The game is short enough and intersting enough to give the player a reason to want to try to find out as much as possible, which seems to be the point of this game.

(Choices effect the outcome.)

I thought the game could have been better delivered in some of the story with more choices and longer game play. Some better character development would have been nice to. I’m not sure who I’m really cheering for in this story. The mapping is competent enough and the artwork, especially for Red is really nicely done. I really like how Red is portrayed as a dark shadowy figure in all the conversations. This conveys a lot to the player about her inner demons. Overall I think the game is a tad too short and doesn’t tell us enough or build up any sort of tension. It’s an interesting play, but not much more. This is why I give this game a 3 / 5.
