Way too short

Peeking at Stars is an incredibly short, 10-minute(max) piece. This space-themed game is seemingly created to set a weird mood, having dark undertones. Make no mistake, it is worth a quick peak.

You start as an astronaut, exploring the vicinity and entering three different pathways, each with a separate psychological vibe. You become lost in despair, as ultimately, you and the space colony watches as Earth comes to an end.

I cannot be certain as to what the premise of the story is. But, what I can put together is that humans have left Earth to colonize the Moon, which is where you reside in. If this is purely metaphorical, then I assume it is meant to portray your life's failures.

However, there is very little actual content. There's no defined characters, and all the gameplay consists of is walking around. The story is not very apparent, either. It does not make clear whether the end of Earth was a literal interpretation or not; but, it's not a bad thing.

If there's one word I'd use to describe the music, it'd be 'ominous'. When the player receives a message, they're treated to an ambient, mysterious theme. The messages, on the other hand, sound like they try to be too edgy. Or in other words, falsely omnipotent.

Graphically, the custom pixel art is fantastic. This is likely the most rewarding aspect of my experience. Never has the destruction of civilization looked so beautiful. The developer has some talent, to be sure.

The quality is there, but not necessarily as a game. This is almost like grading a fork for its ability to be a pretzel. But, I refuse to accept that a game on this site cannot be scored. I am not the reviewer this site wants, I am the reviewer it deserves. And as a game, Peeking at Stars falls short. Final Score 4/10

Man, somebody finally gave the game a rating. Didn't see that one coming. I'm not even concerned about the 2 stars, I'm just happy that it actually has stars to begin with now.

I agree, the game is far too short. It was initially conceptualized as being much more character and story driven and a good deal longer, but I ended up sliding into depression and cut it short. I do intend to revisit the game at some point and retool it to what it originally set out to be though.

Thanks for the review.
