Sacred Reviews: Akage

Introduction
Akage was created using RPG Maker VX Ace and is meant to star a young female warrior who is on a quest of revenge against a bunch of bandits for burning down her house. And, that's all the story we really get for this game. Sadly, this game is plagued by problems that are frustrating for me on many different levels. So, I guess, I'll start with the bleeding elephant in the room first and talk about the design of the main character.
Design of the Main Character
The design of the lead character in this game is basically forcing me to discuss fan service and its use within video games or any form of entertainment in general for that matter. And, I'll be upfront in admitting that I think fan service has it's time and place and can be rather tasteful if done well, but the use of fan service has to be applied to actual characters.
Gameplay
While this game is an action RPG and features a real-time combat system. The limited amount of room to fight in this game basically makes it degenerate into a turn-based RPG. Since, you'll largely just stand in front of your opponent exchanging blows. The only way around this is to utilize magic, but this just means you'll have to constantly be running back and forth from your current location on the map to the most recent heal point. And, this process gets old rather quickly.
To make matters worse the controls are rather iffy. The game utilizes the A key as the primary attack key while the S key is utilized for casting spells. The D key is used to cycle between the spells you've acquired. The problem comes in from the usage of the Z key which is used to pick up items in this game. And you will need to pick up items in this game constantly. It's a practice that grows annoying rather fast, but its made even worse by the fact that your hand will naturally rest over the z key after a while since its the default action key in most RPG Maker games.
Another system that feels mixed at best is the mana stones enhancement system. The game never provides you with an opportunity to buy any of these stones. So, it's completely down to the luck of the draw to get anything of actual value, but none of the stones seem to be particularly useful beyond a small handful of stat points. If anything the system completely undermines itself by the fact that you can't remove these stones from an item after you've equipped them without losing them entirely. So, the game effectively prevents you from mixing and matching the various stones you've found to find the layout that offers you the most benefit.
And while the game does have one strong point in that it provides the player access to four different levels of difficulty ranging from easy to insane. This system also feels undermined by the lack of depth in the basic combat system. If anything raising the difficulty of this game just means the player will be forced to spend even more time backtracking to healing points found throughout the game in order to avoid being short on hp and mp recovering potions later.
Sound
Surprisingly the sound effects and music in this game do alright for themselves. And, that's all I really have to say about that.
Conclusion
The amount of negatives that burden this game make it a sight to behold, but only in the same way one might view Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. It's an example of fan service done in the worst way possible and it's gameplay reflects the quality of its artwork. It's a game that is best skipped over in favor of other games starring a female lead.

This is surprising harsh. I gave the game a go and it was decent. Sure, it's not breaking any barriers, but everything worked, there was only one spelling mistake, one or two awkward lines and yeah, the battle scripts weren't customised much (if at all).
But everything worked. Sure, the Main Character's portrait was... uh... yeah... but the rest of the graphics were well-done. Maps were good for running around in and the layout was interesting, making you have to double-back into areas that you already saw. Music was good - it was loud but it wasn't RTP and everything sounded decent.
It would have been nice to see the scripts customised more. Putting in your own spell components instead of using the default, and allowing for more mana drops so that you'd have more of a choice of what to equip and build your character up more to your style. Perhaps some stuff that allowed you to upgrade your sword swing speed and dodge ability would have been cool.
The control set-up was a bit annoying (for the record, Z is also Enter and Space, so either of those would have worked in conjunction. Since I use the right-side of the keyboard when playing RM games, I didn't like having to reach all the way back and forth to press the keys but it wasn't a major inconvenience, just really annoying. You can set up the keys differently in the script, but again, no real customising happened to that script. I highly recommend you do delve into it and edit a few bits and bobs to make work for your game instead of just being someone else's gameplay slapped into your work.)
Everything works, though. I didn't have an issue with being stuck in corners (and I aimed for it a bit just to see if I could be). It helped that you could open your menu and chug a potion while being attacked (one time I had 1 HP left and just managed to chug one down just as the enemy swing at me. I survived~). I do recommend upping the drop-rate of potions a little - even playing on Normal I had to use an Elixir at one point.
Also, customise your game more. Leaving default names shows no effort. Highly recommend you give your world a bit more flair. As it stands the game is okay, but it's not good or great and it could use more of your personality in it. You have some - your dialogue was charming in areas, I thought, though a little odd at times - so please use it.
It's a decent game though, despite its faults, and definitely doesn't deserve .5 in my opinion. Maybe a 2, but it's playable and not full of bugs, spelling errors, bad mapping, broken gameplay and horrible everything.

dodge ability would have been cool.
And, yet the main reason I panned this game so hard is because of this lack of a dodge ability. In my opinion you should be able to avoid attacks in an action RPG. In fact, I consider the ability to avoid attacks in a game like this a core mechanic and the absence of it instantly dropped this game down to instant fail.
I guess, you can argue that my opinion on the music and graphics are overly harsh, but their aspects of most games that I couldn't care about. I often times have a hard time even remembering if a game even had music unless it left some sort of impact on me or catches my fancy like "My Glasses are Addicted" from Mana Khemia.
@thesacredlobo, ya got it all WRONG.
From your review, I'd say you either did not even TRY to finish this game OR you simply do not enjoy this TYPE of game.
I love ABS games.
I played this to the end playing EVERY day till I finished it because I enjoyed it THAT much.
If you had taken your time you would have found many more STAT STONES. You simply have to run around each room and you automatically pick them up. YES, you can dodge the monsters attack, each monster has a certain way of attacking so you just need to learn how to get out of their way after firing your magic at them.
You can hide and attack. I learned that with the first boss I fought.
I also NEVER had to use the Z key. I picked up all the monster drops with the enter key. ALSO, if all monsters are in front of you, they can't hit you with their weapon or their magic until you pick up the dropped prize bag.....
Gees, sacred, if you're going to trash a game, at least learn how to play it right.
Hope I was not too harsh, but I really enjoyed this game and now others who might have tried it because they LIKE this kind of game, may pass it over.
As for story content, this kind of game does not NEED it.
The action, controls, monsters and mapping were all enjoyable.

You could always write a review of your own ^_^ I say, the more opinions on a game, the better!
Now I'm curious to play for myself to see how the ABS holds up.

Aw, wish I could.
I've talked about reviews on this site a few times.
I simply don't have the confidence to write one. :(
But you're right, I should at least try :)
It's a good thing I at least have a spellcheck system to correct that part of a review :)

I've beaten this game twice. Once on normal and once on easy in order to save on time for a Let's Play. A Let's Play which I've already submitted to this site.

It wasn't the number of stat stones I was complaining about, but that they don't offer that much of a stat increase to really have that much influence on play style and that you couldn't remove them from an item without losing them. As such I horded the bulk of my stones until I acquired the last weapon since I didn't want to waste any that fit my preferred method of combat.
And your defense of the dodging doesn't really help here since my complaint was about dodging attacks if you were fighting at melee range and not at a distance.
You can still argue that my unwillingness to use MP restoring items made this game harder then it needed to be, but I'd argue the game shouldn't force me to rely on magic so much if I have nice pointy sword.

Liberty already agreed with me that you can pick up items with the z key. You can also utilize the space bar and enter key as well since they all operate as the same button, but I tend to utilize the key commands that the game itself spells out instead of checking every button on the keyboard.
I'm also well aware that enemies can't hit you if they are behind an item, but conversely you can't hit them either. And my issue with this setup is that I find it highly irritating to need to stop and pick up every item.

Your are correct in saying a game like this doesn't need a deep story. My complaint though is that this game needs to have a deeper story and more engaging main character if it wants to justify throwing the main character in a combat bikini. Other wise the game just feels like its making a cheap appeal to my two best friends if you catch my drift.
@thesacredlobo,
"It wasn't the number of stat stones I was complaining about, but that they don't offer that much of a stat increase to really have that much influence on play style and that you couldn't remove them from an item without losing them. You did not need to hoard you stat stones. There were loads of them. I kept changing stones and had several left over because I knew how to find MOST of them.
I'm not a brilliant gamer. I just enjoy playing these games. Maybe you should not have played like a strategist or needing to make a video. You should have simply relaxed and played the game for enjoyment as most players do. Also, you can only apply just so many stones to a particular piece of equipment so ya, you wasted a crap load of stones.
"And your defense of the dodging doesn't really help here since my complaint was about dodging attacks if you were fighting at melee range and not at a distance."
Of course, if you're going to mash your "A" key weapon you may very well lose. A little strategy using the sword and magic combo goes a long way. Also, if you had learned to use your items better along with the escape key, you might have enjoyed the game a little more. Why collect so many stones and potions BUT NOT USE THEM??? Silly :)
"You can still argue that my unwillingness to use MP restoring items made this game harder then it needed to be, but I'd argue the game shouldn't force me to rely on magic so much if I have nice pointy sword."
As for the above, that's your choice and fault for picking a game that requires a combo of pointy sword and magic. Even in Legend of Zelda, Link used weapons, bombs and a variety of items.
Like I said, you chose the wrong kind of game to play for your enjoyment and since you did not enjoy it, you trashed it.
Maybe you could have chosen to simply admit you picked the wrong game for your purpose and decide not to do a review. Then you would not have had me, a Zelda nut, I mean just look at my name, to contend with :)

I'm well aware of the fact that you can pause the game and use potions in the middle of battle. It doesn't change the fact that I like to hoard healing items for boss battles. It also doesn't change the fact that I expect an action RPG to have a decent dodge system in place so I can avoid damage to some extent. Heck, even in Zelda games like Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask you can avoid attacks by doing rolls and side steps. Or you can utilize your shield to block most incoming attacks.

It also doesn't help your case that most enemies in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask can be effectively defeated with nothing more then your trusty blade and shield. Maybe the handhelds are different, but I've never felt all that strapped for arrows or bombs in either of those titles.
@thesacredlobo, boy now you're really stretching it.
How can you possibly compare Akage with Zelda games.
This one is made by an amateur using a simple engine.
Zelda games are made with a MUCH more powerful engine AND created
by a TEAM of PROFESSIONALS. Your comparison is TOTALLY off. :)
Basically, you picked a game not knowing if you would like it, then since you
did not like it, you trashed it with 1 1/2 stars downgrading the chance this
developer had for any kind of recognition :(
Admit it sacred, you goofed trying to get makerscore. That was a joke :)

The original Legend of Zelda was not only made on the 8bit system, it was made by a team of professional game makers. This game was made on a much less powerful engine (I think). And made by an amateur.
All I'm trying to get across to you is try to be a little more understanding of the effort that these developers put into a game before you trash it.
Maybe reviews should be used only for those who really know how to make games and will give constructive advice. The star rating is seen on the
Ya know what InfectionFiles, you're right. We all have a right to our opinion. I saw another game that was really excellent trashed and it brought down the overall Star Rating and it was because the reviewer simply did not like that kind of game. It's too bad RMN does not have a rating system so one person does not hurt the overall reviews and thereby the games chance for a little more good recognition.

Well, sir, you've already written a review in this thread.
You reviewed Sacredlobo's review.
It is as my English professor always said,
"Be careful when you review, lest ye be reviewed in turn."
If you can review a reviewer, you can review a game.

REALLY ?? :) that's your argument??
Your original comment was to compare Akage and Zelda in a favorable light. The fact that you take offense at me using the same game to point out Akage's failings is both bizarre and childish.

Why does the power of the system matter? I'm not judging the game as poor because of its lack of strong visuals or forgettable music. I'm judging the game for it's poor melee combat. And you haven't offered any meaningful defense other then to look at solutions that cover up the problem rather then address it.

All I'm trying to get across to you is try to be a little more understanding of the effort that these developers put into a game before you trash it.
I'm aware of how time consuming a project like this can be to some extent. I did muddle around with RPG Maker 2000 and 2003 back in the day and never managed to finish one project. I'll give anyone with the patience to waddle through that creative process a pat on the back, but it doesn't change my opinion about this game when it comes to the melee combat.

I also tire of you implying that I trashed this game because I have deep personal issues with the style of the game. I'm curious how that defense holds up in the face of my reviews for titles like Ayumi and Guardians.
gee, and here I thought we were done with this :)
I never said you "had deep personal issues" with this game.
SIMPLY that you did not like this type of game.
In fact, you might try reading the other review of this game and my post after it. Maybe you will see what I'm talking about. That person is a developer who makes very good games.
Again, I am just trying to say, if you are not going to make constructive comments on the mechanics of a game, then just post in the Summary. Don't give it half a star and make nothing but derogatory comments, thereby possibly making others think twice before playing a game they MIGHT enjoy.

My comparison is only that they are similar in the way they play. Meaning the character swings a sword and uses different things to get around and kill monsters. That is the only thing I was comparing. You used a game made by a professional group of developers with unlimited resources and a total amateur creating a game for fun. That's two totally different things.

I suppose I could say you simply don't know how to play this kind of game :)
In a game like this you find the best way to kill monsters and not die. If you do die, and I died many times :) you come back at your last save point and try again. I had NO PROBLEM with the melee fighting, I actually enjoyed it. Sounds kind of like you are unhappy the developer did not cater to your way of playing. If you don't like a game because you don't like the way it plays, then find another game you do enjoy. Don't trash it because you don't enjoy this type of game or the way it plays.
Reviews should be constructive, not malicious because you can't figure out how to beat it. I've quit MANY games and deleted them. In fact, I deleted about 3-4 games just this afternoon because I did not like how the game was made. But I did not write a derogatory review or post a bad comment because I did not like the way it was made.
If you are simply trashing a game with no constructive comments on how to help the developer to improve his game, then why comment at all. It's just mean spirited.

Reviews are meant to give actual opinions. Not only the good opinions to raise the games recognition.
Yeah, Linkis, these are reviews, they're opinions, everyone's allowed to have their own opinion, and he backed it up with a lot of points, so he's allowed to post this review.
Linkis, your attitude here actually harms the developers on here far more than sacred' most negative review ever could. When you dismiss the Zelda comparisons on the basis of them having "unlimited" resources (which is very far from the truth, but it's not the point here) you essentially cede superiority to the AAA without a fight. I'm haven't played too many games on here but I would already describe some of them as not just equal but superior to many "professional" games.
However, they're still (with few exceptions) virtually unknown outside of our community because of significant anti-RM / anti-freeware bias, and the practice of giving a free pass to sub-par projects because they're free/made for fun is a huge obstacle in overcoming it. Sometimes, you've got to separate wheat from chaff, and though I've also got some issues with sacred's review, it still appears far more appropriate than that four-star one.

@everyone who disagrees with me :) Read his reply to Liberty. He is wrong. The only way I was able to beat the game is because I was able to find and use the "dodge ability". And, his statement: "And, yet the main reason I panned this game so hard".
Yes, everyone does have a right to their opinion. If he had just given an opinion, I might not have objected so strongly. Think about when your looking for a game to try out. Would you think twice before spending your time playing a game with no stars? OR a game that has only 1/2 a star?
Maybe I should not even have "Reviewed the review". After playing the game and enjoying it so much, and knowing there are not many of this type of game on this site, I was upset not so much with the review but the 1/2 star which everyone sees on the main game page.
If I have offended anyone, I apologize. ALSO: if this conversation hurts anyone or RMN, thin I have no problem with a moderator deleting all my posts.
Thank you, over and out. :)
PS: @ NTC3, I ain't really sure what you are saying :) I know nothing about creating games. This is the pretty much the only site I know who that produces free games and I think you are talking about bias or those who disapprove of freeware. ???
dodge ability would have been cool.
"And, yet the main reason I panned this game so hard is because of this lack of a dodge ability. In my opinion you should be able to avoid attacks in an action RPG. In fact, I consider the ability to avoid attacks in a game like this a core mechanic and the absence of it instantly dropped this game down to instant fail."
"I guess, you can argue that my opinion on the music and graphics are overly harsh, but their aspects of most games that I couldn't care about."

The reason I wrote a review (or even commented on this review) is that I very much objected to the score given by this review. Very much. But that doesn't invalidate the point of view that was given.
To me, the score of the game has now reached the right score for it so I'm not fussed too much. It balances out, as you can see. If this review was rescored to be higher, then the score would balance out to more than 2.5 and that would annoy me because the game isn't a good game. It's a lazy game (with the exception of the maps and character art and even that is lazy if you consider the horrendous body that was given to the main character. My god, those butt flaps will haunt me forever, as will the misplaced belly button >.<; ).
Why is it lazy? Because the creator just slapped in a script and left it as that. I understand that you might not have played anything with this script in it before, Linkis, but I have - quite a few times - and most games that use it do not change it from the default, just like this game. It's very lazy and one of the reasons the game didn't score higher from me. But I don't think it deserved .5 stars because of it - because it wasn't unplayable and it wasn't badly mapped.
But, again, it was lazy. And that's why I'm fine with sacred leaving this as .5 - because I can see where he's coming from (and it balances the full score perfectly~)
