Could've Used Some Pointers From Pokemon

Ah, a "Lunch Break Sized RPG". brings back fond memories of the last one of those I played. It was called AdventureQuest. I hated it. But, I try to keep an open mind. So, I opened it up and was greeted with...
I like how its ripped off of a different game's title, and in order to distract me from this, used MS Paint to "invert the color". Gives me a good feeling!
So, as I start a new game, I get a nice little story that sounds like it was taken from "Cheesiest Adventure Stories Of All Time". Then I get to pick a character....
Ah. I like the subliminal messaging of "CHOOSE HERO". Would've been nice if it wasn't HE |game| RO though. I beat the entire game tanking as a Knight. Now, time to review....
STORY:
I highly doubt you're playing this game for story. But...
SPOILERSPOILERSPOILER
YOU FIGHT A DRAGON AND MARRY A PRINCESS! WEWT
ENDSPOILERENDSPOILERENDSPOILER
Course, you can always play the magician and get NES Graphic Girl/Girl marriage. Approved by the king. Haawt.
BATTLE SYSTEM:
I was actually kinda looking forward to this, being an NES game. No, I'm not grading it by newer standards, but THIS? This is a let down.
Okay, I get that the game is low graphical support and such, but really? Oh well, at least they'll show a little fight sce- oh wait.
Nope. Course not. drat. I would've enjoyed watching a small fight scene.
MUSIC & SOUNDICS:
Yes, I'm well aware "soundics" isn't a word. It just sounds like "lyrics" see? Anyways, I was let down by these. The sounds didn't connect with the graphics at ALL. It was Rm2k3 sounds with NES graphical styling. Not very well connected...
MAPPING:
Well, they all connected, as you saw from my pretty pictures. Nothing much to say here.
EVENT STYLING:
Now, as this game is pretty much event driven, you think they'd have great, awesome events. Personally, I felt like the events could have been created by a team of sugar high monkeys. Now, I know "IT B NES STAYLE DUNGEN CRAWLER!!!!1!eleven!!111!1" but, I clearly remember the "NES" not doing this:
I had no keys, and no way to leave. I got to restart! SWEET! Seriously though, its not that hard of a Conditional Branch. Took me about 5 minutes to make it.
Seriously guys. From a DCRPG, it shouldn't be that technical to create a "Go Back A Room" event. Most Dee See Ar Pee Gees let you do that.
OVERALL GRADING:
I give it a 2/5. Its a decent game, but some incredibly small tweaks could've made it a lot better.

wutz diz pokeymans shizzle?
going back through rooms though, there was alot more to it than just branches and I had little time to make the extra work required. There's, however, only one situation that could possible land you stuck in a room without keys (namely only gentlemen and merchants) and since it has happened to me once in 100 playthroughs (or something), I didn't actually bother.

Happened to me about 5 times. In 10ish playthroughs. First time it was with the merchants/gentlemen, second time it was with monsters that dropped coins/lives/swords, 3rd time merchants/coins, 4th time monsters with no keys, 5th time gentleman/monsters... Am I just unlucky?
HMMM. Well, given the circumstances of my rushed work and testing inability, chances are there might still be bugs left in the game.
What's really confusing, however, is the fact that the drops are always the same; if you do not have a key and open a chest/slay a monster, you get a key. This is, through all of mine and my friends playthroughs, a fact. Getting merchants/gentlemen three times in 10 playthroughs is just incredibly unlucky (they have each a 5% chance of spawning in a room, additionally, if I'm not mistaken, merchants may sell keys) but an explanation for the other problems you've encountered, I cannot even replicate myself to solve :S

Ah. Probably should've added that originally. Sorry, trying to remove that bloody "Desktop Defender 2010" right now. But, my biggest complaint is the "Open Door" thing. And I changed the title. The "Pokemon" thing was referring to the Pokemon dungeonish things which had the elevator and stairs. And keycards. You could always just go right back through an open door...
Wow, now my feelings are really hurt. My game was worse than this...
(Or maybe it wasn't, considering two different ppl rated)
Seriously, why are the graphics so bad? I have decent stuff on my 2k3. Btw, AdventureQuest is currently displaying on my ads as I type this. And yea, I hated it.

this review suffers from: "i don't actually have more than a sentence about any aspect of game making, so i'm going to add some oversized pictures to compensate for it."
Tried to avoid that, but I tried to use the pictures for "Visual Aid". Not "Compensating For Lack Of Game Making Aspects". I'm gonna try and fix that. Eventually.
One thing I find incredibly interesting however, is that I was the only one who seemed to not really like this game. Huh.
And if I acted like other people on this site coughbulmacoughcough I'd probably say that "AND THAT'S THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS!" But, I'm not. I did beat your game though, and it was rather fun. Now, back to searching for a FFT Tileset for my TBS game...
