Brainstorming about a future SPACE SEQUEL

Hello everyone! I know it's a bit early to do this, as I don't even have the post-contest version up (though it's coming soon!), but I can't seem to get the thought of a sequel out of my mind, so I thought I'd talk about it. Keep in mind that these are purely ideas at this point and nothing's been decided for sure.

-As for the engine, I can't decide if I should keep it in 2k3 or "jump ship" to Ace. I vastly prefer Ace's flexibility, and it would let me do a CTB system rather than a ATB system. I think that I could still use the 2000/2003 graphics with it (of course they'd need some tweaking to fit).

-I'm contemplating commissioning an artist for facesets for the sequel, especially if I go the Ace route. That way I can have a range of emotions for each character (and I won't be stretching the 2000 or 2k3 faces to fit with Ace if I go that direction) and they can look somewhat distinct from every other 2000/2k3 faceset-using game.

-The game would take place mostly on the SpaceTime-Cube Death-Maze. I'm considering the H.E.A.R.T. team getting captured and losing their gear and upgrades (so I could do all new stuff with Maelym and LR-388) and they have to work with a new fourth character to save the Space Prince and escape.

What do you think? Keep in mind that this isn't something I'm going to start on right away; I just wanted to get my thoughts down and see what everyone thinks ^_^

Ace lets you do way more to customize your game, so I'd say go with Ace. I'm a bit iffy on the policy of using 2k3's RTP outside of 2k3, so I'd check up on that before committing to using the RTP. If it's fine, then I'd be on board with using it.

The potential problem with commissioning an artist just for faces means that it has the possibility of clashing with the rest of the graphics. To be honest, I'd like to see more of your own art. Your facesets in Luxaren Allure had their own charm to them, and I'd like to see more. Of course, it's still your prerogative if you want to commission them instead.

The story concept seems fine. I'd like to see the return of the three antagonists from the first game to develop them more.

It's perfectly normal to start thinking of a sequel, especially considering the interest gained in nhubi's review, but I have to echo your thought that this isn't something you should worry about until you get at least one more project done.

I totally suggest Aceing it up. Download one of my old Demon Tower demos if you want the RTP all VX'd up!

As for commissions... eh. I get it. I think that where it's only a few face sets for the main cast you could get somebody on the site to do it for free maybe? It's not like you're an unproven parasite.

red: you can use it if you own legal 2k3.

If I did my own drawings for it, they'd look something like this (whipped this up just now):

I guess that's not terrible. I could go with that.

Thanks a lot, Craze! :DDDD I'll be thinking about facesets. Maybe asking for help is the best bet.

I'd do it for free, but I'm not as good as, say, Sooz or M-3-1.

Thanks for the thought, Red! Was my attempt at least decent, or should I ask around when the time comes?

It is decent, especially if you made it just now. If you made it just now, then I can't really nitpick too much except to ease up on the line thickness The biggest thing that stuck out to me is the huge line thickness. If you ease on on that, then it would look so much better.

Hang on a sec. I'm gonna try something...

maybe the "atmosphere" command on LR will do something in a sequel!??

Oh crap, I left that on her!? I didn't even notice XD I better fix that.

...Maybe in the future she can install an air-conditioning unit or something XD

So I did a thing:

Notice the lines in general are a lot smaller? This can help give a more defined shape to a character's face and make it a bit more pleasing to the eye. Also note the difference in line thickness. Compare the outside of the ears to the inside, for example. The difference in line thickness can do a lot to add depth to a character's portrait.

Sorry it took so long. I spent more time cleaning up that sketch than I care to admit, and in hindsight I should have just worked with your portrait instead of opting to draw an entirely new face. Hopefully, though, you understand what I'm saying.

EDIT: If an ACTUAL artist wants to step in and tell me how wrong I am, feel free and I'll just go sulk in the corner.

Wow Red is it me or is are you improving? I really like the proportions for that face, looks super cuuuuuute <3

Edit: Oh and as for making a 2k3 game in Ace: Cap, Jo and I used 2k3 rips and converted them to VXA for Our Desolate Planet and it's a pretty simple process. Ace is a lot more flexible with battles; people generally dislike 2k3's battle system. It's quite difficult to keep everything in pixels when using VXA, though. Even though the tiles are essentially 16x16, the characters still move as if they are 32x32 and the windows are still HD. Sometimes it creates quite a queer feeling of inconsistency, but if you're careful it can look good.

I'm fine with both Red's and your facesets, although I am a fan of Red's thin lines in this case, if you could employ that to your own style that would be beneficial.

So in short I'm excited for this news because... more space unity games, woohoo!

Glad you like it, unity! That didn't take me too long to do, so if you're interested, and if you're ready to work on it, I can try my hand at some art for your games. But honestly, if you can thin out your lines, I could really enjoy seeing your art!

That is really good to hear, Cash. I've been working on fundamentals of art for the last month and a half ever since I got my tablet. So much so that I've been slacking off on game mak itself. I've been studying anatomy and face structures more than trying to get any art done for my games. Hearing that from you really made the studying worth it!

My work here is done.

Seriously though I would play a sequel obviously and I think if you feel more comfortable doing that in Ace, then go for it. The contest restrictions dictate this game, not any future instalments. I actually quite like your face-set style, though yes the line thickness is distracting, but the overall look is distinctive and appealing.

In regard to the whole, lose upgrades and gear, it's a trope that works though I must admit one day I really would like to see a game where the character's level and skills match their descriptions. The number of battle hardened/mentor/older warrior/studied scholar types that get added to a party to give it some gravitas that always seem to start at level 1 is astounding. Honestly you have 99 levels to play with as a default and who generally gets above 20-25 in an average length game? There is so much wiggle room there for potential stories with a group of people who have earned their stripes and know what it is they are doing.

Sorry that was a trifle OT, I'll be looking forward to this when it does eventuate...after LA is finished though, right?

Hehe. I've got some options for art on this one, so I'll wait on making any final decisions for now. This is a far off project, after all.

Thanks! And yes, this is your fault, nhubi! I wouldn't even be thinking of a sequel if your review hadn't mentioned it XD

About the skills/levels, I plan to have Jean-Luc retain all the skills he had before, if that's any consolation, and everyone but the new girl will be at Level 20 at the start (oh, did I mention? There'll be a new character). I may try to find some way to make what you say work, I just feel like it would be freeing to have some of those gadgets and upgrades gone ^^;;

And yes, this won't even get started until Luxaren Allure is completely finished ^_^ I just wanted to get the ideas out there.
