You are Mason Lansdale, an American private detective investigating the disappearance of a 17 year old girl named Kyra Leighton. The case has taken you all the way to London, England, to investigate a private medical research think tank called Wingate Medical that has recently requested the records of Kyra and 4 other girls just like her who disappeared.

At first, Lansdale is concerned primarily with breaking into Wingate to find evidence that will make the case, but as the night goes on the situation quickly evolves into something far more sinister, and terrifying and your primary goal becomes survival.

In the end, the most potent and relevant weapon you have is your wits.

This IS in the horror genre, so you are not giving the game a fair chance if you don't play it alone, in total darkness, with your $300 head phones cranked all the way up, and of course, in full screen mode. As an interesting note, this is the only horror anything I've ever made that is, in fact, 100% NON-SUPERNATURAL. In other words, yes, this is more Resident Evil than Silent Hill.

How about that you guys?

Ruptured Souls is the winner of RMN's (unofficial, I guess) Halloween Game Making Contest!

How about that, you guys?

I think this is the first time that I've ever won any kind of contest, ever, at anything, in my life.

I'd say that it helps that there was only one contestant, but considering that contestant was the unspeakably talented Rei-, the creator of Elegy's Eve, which won the big money GW contest which must have had over a dozen contestants, I'm not going to sell myself short. The competition while limited in number was very stiff- more of a game DUEL, really- and honestly I'm very surprised I won.

Unfortunately, Ruptured Souls remains by far my least played game on RMN, by a factor of 1/2 (compared to Iron Gaia/Backstage's downloads) or 1/10th (compared to Mage Duel's). So let's fix that shall we? Come on, you fuckers, try Ruptured Souls! Sam liked it! He said he wanted to "hump me" and that I was "sexy". These are direct quotes.

If that's not a strong endorsement, I don't know what is.

That said I suppose the contest win means I should tell you where I'm at with this project. The answer is: general/mystery hiatus. This means that work is not progressing on this project, has not been since Halloween, and will not be until I don't know when. This isn't necessarily something to get worried about.

Usually when I start working on a project there is an early "sprinting period" of major interest when I make huge progress from a week to two months. Then nothing happens for a long, long time until I get my motivation back, my second wind.

This will remain a stealth project, i.e. expect to see unpromoted, unannounced releasesof it showing up out of nowhere, at random intervals.

Comparing it to my three other active projects, it is not a short term priority (Mage Duel), a long term priority (Starseed) or a longstanding obligation (Backstage 2). But that does not necessarily mean I will work on it less, with the way that I work.

You know what would help me keep working on this sucker though? More downloads. :P And if somebody could add a review to the site, that would be nifty as well.

You see, I quite like the site (I am posting this blog entry on it) and do not like to always have to go to the forums for feedback.

Anyway, thanks to Sam and Asalieri and everyone else who has given this largely overlooked game a shout out.

Sorry to say but this game is the best looking one I've seen from you Max. Why is it cancelled?

Best looking REALLY shouldn't be such a big fracking deal to people, but that's especially unkind to say on a day when I've just released a completely brand new game.

Anyway, there are two and a half (the third one is really crappy and only counts as half) reasons for Ruptured Souls being cancelled. (It being cancelled by the way is nothing resembling news.)

Reason A) I have limited time and energy to commit to game development, and other projects are higher priorities. Namely, Backstage 2.
Reason B) The wide-open "choose-your-own adventure" style gameplay, cinematically rendering the results of every possible player choice, was exactingly labor-intensive.
Reason C) It just didn't hold my interest.
