OFFICIAL FREE DEMO NOW LIVE!

Edward (Ned) Chetsworth & Kitt Hansby, former residents of a hollowed town named Moonvale, are making a sudden return. Their purpose - to find an ancient trinket, The Mortimar, in order to re-establish Ned's beloved library which has been run out of town by a sleek and sly competitor. Their task comes with great risk, however, as their treasure lies within the Whispering Woods, an enchanted forest with a dark, morbid history.

A diverse cast of characters come together to create a memorable story. Hours of pre-planning and story-board sessions were utilized to ensure the story of North to Hollow Grove is memorable with humor, emotion, and sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat excitement.

Break through crates, turn over stones, climb trees and traverse over rivers. The days of endlessly moving from point A to point B are over. A traditional side-view turn-based battle system will make every RPG enthusiast have great nostalgic memories as they fight their way through a wide-array of enemies and monsters.

RIEs, or Random Interactive Events, bring the world to life. Birds soar through the skies, randomly landing and dropping items. Each NPC is unique with their own story, their own patterns, and their own agenda. Rain falls, thunder shakes the skies, leaves flutter in the autumn sky. There is nothing static about the world of North to Hollow Grove.

We take pride in our questing system. An MMO inspired tracking system makes questing easy, fun, and rewarding. Hundreds of quests open new paths to story events, rare items, and much more. No grinding, no unnecessary time fillers.

It's time to brag to your friends! Each area is filled with dozens of achievements to obtain; from battling hordes of enemies to collecting fun items. Be sure not to leave any stone un-turned - it may be hiding a fun item.

Skilled artists illustrate the story in epic fashion. Professional artwork will elevate the game's polish to the likes of other Triple A titles of old such as Final Fantasy and Zelda.

We are working our hardest to hit our target of October 31st, 2016, however it will really depend on how successful our crowd-funding efforts are.

Our initial focus groups and surveys (conducted mostly in late 2014) told us that there is a large audience of gamers that would be very receptive of a gloomy type of RPG rather than a traditional medieval or futuristic type of RPG. The team also happens to have a mutual-liking for dark, quirky works of art so we figure, "Why not?"

Oh, the list could go on and on. In terms of people - Tim Burton, Christopher Nolan, Mary Harron, Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, Stephen King, Wes Craven, M. Night Shyamalan, Roman Polanski, and Sam Raimi to name a few. In terms of games - Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Golden Sun, Don't Starve, Resident Evil, World of Warcraft, Fable, The Elder Scrolls, and many more.

Currently, North to Hollow Grove is planned to be at least 20 hours long if one were to rush from point A to point B while neglecting all other content. We're hoping a more typical, average run through will take about 40 hours.

October 31st, 2015 (Halloween)! Members of RPG Maker Net will have exclusive access to the demo. We're really looking for some honest feedback from other respected and skilled developers.

Yes! A Kickstarter will be launched (hopefully) by December after collecting feedback from our demo and making any necessary adjustments. We would appreciate your help as well! Yes, you! Simply tell your gamer friends and family members about our game and send them a link to this page. It would mean a lot to us. We're all working very hard (un-paid) hours on this project and are hoping to raise funds to cover start-up costs, advertising costs, etc.

Nate - Lead Developer

Nate here! I received a BBA of Finance & Management at Western Michigan University. I've been involved in the "underground" gaming industry for over ten years developing code, designing character graphics, and consulting other amateur developers with regards to project management which has been a very rewarding experience. In my spare time I enjoy playing music (guitar & piano), watching tennis (go Nadal!) and reading.

Frank - Marketing & Promotion

There's James Bond, then there's Frank. Priding himself on having every cool gadget known to man, Frank isn't like most people. He's as cool as the other side of the pillow even in 100 degree temperature. He received a Bachelors Degree in Engineering from Western Michigan University and is the brains behind our advertising campaign.

Dylan - Lead Artist & Design

Dylan is a very talented artist currently living in the Philippines. See all those cool character designs and promotional work? That's all Dylan. He has been doing professional artwork for over five years and, notably, he is left handed.

Molly - Artist & Storyboard Lead

Molly isn't like most girls. She likes creepy things. Real creepy things. Drawing them brings her great joy! She's a perfect fit, right? Molly lives in the Netherlands and has her entire life. She received a Masters Degree from Utrecht School of Arts.

Developer Q&A - Abigail Larson

Art & Illustration
Website

Tell us a bit about yourself!
I'm an illustrator of all things macabre and strange - I love old horror b-movies, old books, and cryptozoology.

What is your most unusual talent?
All of my talents are fairly normal - I draw, sing, and write!

Favorites?
Monster movies, craft beer, Asian food, Tom Waits.

How old are you?
27.

Where are you from?
Richmond, Virginia.

What are some of your credentials?
I have a bachelor's degree in Communication Arts from VCU, with a concentration in drawing and illustration. I've worked for many companies and publishing houses creating artwork for everything from advertisements to fully illustrated books.

When did you start working on art?
I've always considered myself an artist - I never wanted to do anything else. I've been working professionally for about five years.

What has been your most memorable experience being an artist?
Having my first book published was really wonderful, as was my first solo gallery show - but each new project I get to work on is a new challenge that I enjoy more than the last.

What would be your dream career?
I'm doing it! But I guess being a rockstar would be kinda cool too.

Who/what are you biggest artistic influences?
I started out studying Arthur Rackham and John Bauer, but I'm also heavily influenced by Maurice Sendak, Harry Clark, Don Bluth, Hayao Miyazaki, Aubrey Beardsley, and Kay Nielsen (to name a few).

If you could be an animal, what would you be and why?
A bat! They can fly, and they're super cute.

Why are you a part of North to Hollow Grove?
You guys found me! But I'm a part of the team because I love the aesthetic, and I hope I can contribute something unique to the game.

Check back next Tuesday for another Q&A!

I did hop over to your kickstarters and looked at your video and just something to point out is you use very strong battle animations in game that don't really fit the mood you might want to work on that. Seeing your still aiming for a commercial shows a bit of persistence that you believe in the project so I'm looking forward to seeing the results.
Thanks for the feedback! We'll be going commercial whether we receive funding or not since, as you said, we truly do believe in our project. We're confident we can represent the RPG Making community well and hope we can gain all of your support. Our initial Kickstarter was pre-maturely launched to "test the waters" and although we did receive some great feedback from certain media outlets and crowd-funding sites we didn't have enough exposure at the time to meet our mark (not enough people knew about us! =D). What animations in particular are you referring to?

Thank you,

Nate

Did you know some people follow the person who made some of those drawings?
Abigail Larson. :) I been following her for 2 years.
Why don't you mention her and did you ask her for permission?
We do know Abigail! =) You can check out some of her amazing work at:

Hey guys,

The demo is now live! Link is in the description. The game is currently uploading to this website.

Happy Halloween!

Started playing the demo. Premise looks good but I do have a negative comment. The screens are so over burdened with stuff that the game runs as slowly as molasses in a Canadian winter.

May I ask what your computer specs are?

Hey guys

There was a bug with the game's font for certain operating systems. The font has now been included in the standard download. Please check http://www.northtohollowgrove.com/ if the issue persists. The font can be downloaded directly from there.

Happy gaming!

Don't mean to be a jerk, but your game sounds really pretentious.

I did play the demo for a short time, and I have to say that it was nothing special. The story isn't "epic", the world isn't "living and breathing", and the characters are certainly not "UNIQUE". They're not bad mind you, they're just average; and with all those self-praising, I felt cheated.

"Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth"
Just giving my two cents.

Thank you for the feedback! I'm sorry the game doesn't light a fire in you. I really appreciate the honest feedback. I encourage you to keep playing, however! You may have a change of heart if you were to play the full demo as it was designed to give a good feel regarding the game in its entirety. Regardless, thanks for trying the game out! Game on.

Random thoughts

the real tile screen is beautiful! why is there 2 ?)

the intro would benefit from a skip option (go to the point where you first control your character)

lots of nice features! like the girls voice acting! she has a great voice!

choices! dam these choices! :O

anyone else see lag when in the Halloween town? it goes from 40fps to 6-9

that's one laid back cat! all those mice just asking to be pounced on and the cat casually ignores them like he is garfield

:O you...you...burned down... :( that poor family :(

theres a secret grinding spot! i love it! :D

i wonder how steal works tho? it never says anything :3

he really cares about kat!

in the pub basement when Katerina turns on the power. does anyone else get a major freeze?

:O "the master" XD that was amazing! :3

General 1H 50M (shorter if you don't wander like i did)
Hmm...This was...a okay experience. i would upgrade it to good but the lag/fps drop which may be caused my either a memory leak or needing a fairly strong computer.
outside of that and a few bugs.

i did enjoy this game :3. the npcs wandering around the town gave it way more life then you usually see.
the extra little animations they do add so much too the experience. that outside getting stuck trying to figure out where to go next i was never bored.
which for me is fairly difficult.
i actually enjoyed talking to the npcs as there dialog was amusing or interesting.

the mostly non mandatory side quests were good.and nothing important in the demo was obnoxious to complete.
looking at a certain kill enemy achievement
i liked the battle up as well.
its simple. you don't have a lot of skills so theres no pointless ones you will rarely or never use.

Overall
suggest waiting until the demo gets updated. but that aside its worth playing.
i enjoyed it
