It's difficult trying to find color in a black-and-white world.
Must reality be dissolved to do so?

Story:
A fourth-grader (AKA: the character controlled by the player) lives in a society without creativity, in which your school grades are the sole factor which determine your success. But there is a house nearby her own that is known for containing some source of creativity: as it is the only part of the town with color. She is told to never enter.
One day, however, she does, and enters the world of another fourth-grader named Toby, who also lives in a world bereft of creativity. He is the only one who can see her, which makes him appear insane, if his aberrational personality and appearance weren't enough. After a certain amount of time, however, she disappears back to her own world, leaving him alone until she enters the house again. As a part of his mind, she witnesses the climbs and downfalls of his subconscious.

Gameplay: The game is about 1-2 hours long...I guess depending on how fast you read? And what ending you get? Let's go with 1.5 hours.

It is mostly composed of text and focuses heavily on story. There's no battles.

The reason it's horror is because of a few fairly disturbing moments, and there are a few jumpscares depending on what ending you get.

All the art is original! No pre-made graphics were used.

I believe there are 5 possible endings. The decisions make throughout the game don't really affect which one you get, but the last few decisions do make a difference.

Please enjoy! There's still a few errors, as I've been informed, and I'll try to fix them as soon as possible. Nothing too bad, but still. Sorry about that!

Here's the link to the tumblr page, for more art + etc!

EDIT:
Fixed a bunch of errors today!
Including:
-Certain dialogue/spelling
-Glitches/bugs
-The color cards now have an actual purpose
-NEW ENDING (find all the color cards to unlock it)
-Etc, stuff I forgot

EDIT EDIT:
Fun fact: HAHAHA UMM...OKAY, PROBLEM, i screwed up :(
There's even more problems than before!! Oh no!!
I'm super sorry if you were one of the 50 or so people who recently downloaded the game who have had to deal with all these errors. I put the regular download back up for now until I have to time to fix everything
Ahhhhhhhh

NEW: SPANISH TRANSLATION

Aww, thank you! I'm so glad you liked the game!

I, uh, tried to do an LP of the game (the footage messed up, sadly) and ran into a bug about 15 minutes in. I went in the pink house. There was a boy and a tv and no matter what I did, nothing happened. Couldn't leave and it lagged to hell, too. Interacting with everything did nothing, so... Yeah. >.<

Actually, I remember playing the game a while back and running into the same bug. WELP! XP

Oh, haha, that's not a bug! Hint.....try walking in front of the boy 3 times
Sorry about the lagging :(
I have a question: Is there a "True" ending?

I (SPOILERS!!!!) got the ending which has Blanca fleeing the Black & White World) and now I am wondering if there was a different better ending or a true ending. If so, how do I get it? By the way, the game was just awesome!

Hmmmm...I'd say the "true" ending is that ending!
And thanks so much!
By the way, are you the person who made the let's plays on youtube? I loved your videos! They were so cool to watch!
Well I don't know if I am the only person, but yes I made a Let's Play of the game^^ And thank you so much! I can only imagine being on your end but I imagine it to be awesome seeing people enjoy the stuff you yourself created^^
I will release the last part tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, then, since I know that I got the true ending and I will talk a bit mor about why I liked it^^
Ok, so I finished my Let's Play of your game (unecessary plug:)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfoRzMX6sKY

To sum up what I said in the end of the video: This game was really good. The pacing was great, every step forward we made in the game made sense, the story was emotional and the characters relatable. I also really liked the art. I am not sure if this was you first work, but if so, it is really impressive, espacially the storytelling in the game was well done.
So from me you get two thumbs up for this piece of art!

The bucks weren't that bad. Allthough not being killed by Toby in one of the hallway and the knife fight is worth looking into, that would be good to be fixed^^

Well once more thank you for this game and I can't wait for a possible new project in the future^^
Found a bug
it have spoilers so if you didnt complete the game dont look

in the part where guard let you go alone to school and then you can go to the house and red stuff happends if you go to school and then the next day go to the house you will go to the part where he is all grey and goes to school and when he goes to the classroom yo go out and enter again in the hall he have the colored hair and says "there is nothing to be afraid of" in the door and it continues like that day with the bully and stuff.

Oh man...I should really fix these
I'm so sorry guys, I've been really busy! But i'll try to have stuff fixed soon no worries
And thank you for notifying me about the bugs, it's really helpful!
I found some typos and glitches:

  • There are a few ellipses that have four periods instead of three. (The “..I'm sorry” in the kill-Toby branch also has two instead of three.)
  • If you tell Blanca's dad you need something the next morning, he'll say "you wont disappoint me"
  • Examining the house will say "But dad said not to go in" -- since it's used in place of a name, "dad" should be capitalized.
  • When you first visit the abandoned radio tower, Toby says "there's definately something up there"
  • If you go towards the school at the T-junction outside Toby's house, you can't go back. Intentional?
  • On the fourth day, after the house disappears, you can walk over the sink in Blanca's house.
  • Toby's black eye disappears when talking to Maria.
  • If you go to school after reading the "We will find you" notice, the next day the narration will still say it's new.
  • Toby will say “the front door's down there” in the lobby of his house even if he's not in the party. He'll also lose his black eye if he has it.
  • At the start of the… fifth visit to Toby's house, I think? The one after the castle. You can leave the first room without talking to Toby, but you can't go back afterward, leaving you unable to continue the plot.
  • On the second visit to Toby's school, Toby still narrates the description of the nurse and principal's offices as if he's still in the party.
  • And not exactly a bug, but I have no idea what to do in the kill → not friends → knife branch. I can't advance past the town hall, and I can't get past the kids. Is that just supposed to be the end?

As for the game itself…

The setting doesn't make a lot of sense. It seems like one of those dystopias that exists only to cause suffering for the protagonists, with no logic or consistency beyond that. Why can the other parents threaten Toby's mother for letting Toby distract their children but she can't threaten them back for allowing the children to be distracted in the first place? If they really care about efficiency so much, that should be a two-way street. The extremity of the situation makes it feel farcical, since I can't see how it can possibly correspond to anything in real life. The general narrative of not fitting in with society's norms makes sense, sure, but “everyone must conform to a joyless gray dystopia or die” seems over-the-top.

And I really don't understand what you were trying to do with the dialogue options. There aren't many real options – the interactions with Toby are always just “kick the puppy/don't kick the puppy”. I kept wanting to tell Toby “I like you but maybe you should stop talking to me in public because I seem to be causing more problems for you” but there was never any room to express that complicated sentiment. That makes sense after the reveal that this is all happening in the past, but also it seems like Blanca can change the past sort of in the ending? I was also confused with the school/father/etc. choices; I thought they influenced some kind of threat counter but that part seems to run along a scripted, unchangeable route? I don't really understand why going to school was ever an option, since it's never a legitimate choice – it's always either “Blanca hates it” or “Blanca commits suicide and you can't even back out”. It really annoys me when games act like they're giving you legitimate choices only to yell at you for not staying on the railroad like that – why give us a choice at all, then? It's clearly possible to make it to adulthood in this world without snapping, so why can't that be an option for Blanca?

I was also surprised by the reveal that this is set in America. In my experience, America is the polar opposite of this. At my school we constantly got PSAs about how you could be whatever you wanted and we should respect diversity etc. Even in the more conservative areas, American society seethes with anti-intellectualism and loves people who make it on their own without having to go through school or play by the rules. I could see other countries running the risk of becoming like this, but America? Not in a million years.

In general I don't think I really understood what the story was trying to say. Is it supposed to be social commentary or just a fantasy/horror story with the magic imagination powers? It felt like it was trying to do too many things at once.

I also never found out what the cards are for; I got four. Is the fact they're useless supposed to be the point? I also don't know who the white-haired person in the ending is.

Eeey thanks for the info on the glitches! I'll try to fix them as soon as possible :D

And yeah a lot of what you're saying is totally true! It's the first game I ever made so there's definitely a lot of stuff I would have done better or changed if I could write it again!

An important point I think I should bring up, though, is that the character being controlled isn't supposed to be the player. (Even though she's referred to with "you" pronouns) She's just a character that the player controls. I'm not trying to defend myself or anything, I just think it's important to clear up the confusion.

Also, that's sort of the reason I chose that country, because it's the polar opposite of the world being described in the game. What changes most is society, not rights. In the game, technically anyone can have whatever job they want, but they would be looked down upon for wavering from the norm.

And in my experience, art and any creative skill in general is increasingly seen as a "hobby" that is often looked down upon while academic skill is glorified. It'll never get to the point it is in the game, but it's definitely something that is increasing and that's sort of bothering me about society. I guess it sort of depends on the area, as well!

Not to mention a lot of the game is meant to be interpreted. I can't really say what it means because it's different for everyone, yknow? Plus that'd be cheating c:

Again, thank you for the commentary! It's really nice to hear what people think of the game!
This game is really interesting!
But....
What should I do when I have to hide in that small closet where there is a key, and I have to blog the door so Toby won't come inside and kill me?
What should I do when I have to hide in that small closet where there is a key, and I have to blog the door so Toby won't come inside and kill me?

Just keep standing there for a really long time. You should know when it's safe to move.

And in my experience, art and any creative skill in general is increasingly seen as a "hobby" that is often looked down upon while academic skill is glorified.

Huh, really? I think it does depend on the area. Where I come from there are a lot of art colleges and artistic pursuits are encouraged, even though our high schools' art programs aren't the best. It was probably worse a few decades ago, but liberal arts seems to be experiencing a resurgence now, at least in terms of academic favorability. I'm an engineer though, so I wouldn't know the details of what that world is like. :<
Too bad I couldn't understand the ending very well.
But good game!

Hey everyone, sorry for the wait!
I finally fixed the errors! There's also a NEW ENDING! Cool!
Read the update in the description for details!
So now that there's a new ending is there 6? 'Cause I only found 4 before that. I'm also still in search of the new ending even though I think I have all the cards, but I still have a few ideas of how to get it. Do you have to find all the blue cards or just one of them? I found three of them.
I also wanted to tell you that I found some weird glitches when I played the game over after I come back from the pink house. First, I was see through until I was able to get out of the pink house again, but when I came out again my character cycled between standing up depending on which way I went. I think that last one went off after I went to bed.
Lastly, after playing through the game a second time I realized I missed quite a bit from going to school twice when I should've went to the pink house. I thought I was being smart by going to school, but now I know it just interfered with the story. I think when we're supposed to go to the house you should put a barrier towards the school that says "I don't want to." or something so they don't miss out on the story. If you want to see what I'm talking about I did make let's plays of the game on youtube.
Thanks for the game! I really enjoy it!

Auugughhh I can't believe there are still errors!!
Was the transparency thing a major thing that affected the gameplay? (I watched most of your let's play, and I didn't see it? It was a very nice let's play btw, thanks for making it!)
I'll be making a tutorial-type thing of how to get the final ending, no worries!
I'm glad you enjoyed the game either way ^^
tfw you accidentally write "blue card" instead of "indigo card"
I'm a mess guys HAHA
There are 9 cards in total (the seven colors of the rainbow plus black and white)
