somehow i image the water on the left to be more of a hotspring. maybe that's ignorance to the territorial effects of lava

The left hand water is in fact a hot spring, fed by a geyser further up. Hot springs are rather common in volcanic regions. This particular volcano isn't a dead zone so much as an extreme and alien climate.
