Um...A joke/meme game that falls flat~

Title: Daker's Quest
Author: Hooliobro
Play Time: 25-30mins+ (didn't finish)

DAKER'S QUEST

This pretty much sums up what you're about to experience.

Okay, so Daker's Quest is a obvious joke game based on memes and youtube videos. The developer says he made it for friends(do people actually want to play this stuff?) and decided or rather talked into releasing it publicly.
Big mistake, I think. I really feel these types of games are better left behind closed doors as it probably contains inside jokes, memes and things that a very, VERY certain niche may find funny. Sadly, I am not one of these people and can't help but wonder why someone would spend their time making a game like this.
It isn't generally funny. I may have smirked once or twice but mostly it was head shaking and eye rolls like "really?"

Probably how the developer should feel, though I sincerely doubt that he has any aspirations in the RM communities or game making as a whole.

STORY/WRITING:
The story for Daker's Quest is about a singer who is disgraced on TV because the faulty playing of his piano player, Reva. He screws up while singing and flees in shame. Hoping that he can regain his confidence and maybe once again sing again and be respected.
So that's his story. The writing is sub-par. It's a joke game after all so really anything can happen. The world is fantasy based even though he is on TV? The jokes are a bit meh and aimed more towards silly/childish dumb viewers for laughs. Nothing is particularly funny. The developer tried but at least to me the jokes fall flat.
Such as the item shop not really selling any items but is an item shop:

After a small back and fourth you basically learn you can't buy anything here or even look for that matter. This even translates to the battle system where your "Inventory/Items" slot is "WHAT ITEMS?!"

Also things that hint Reva, the woman who screwed you is some kind of dark, evil being or undead of some kind:

This is found beneath her house and says some cryptic shit from a Dark Lord.

Like I said, I may have smirked or SAW the humor in something but it was just so meh:

Is the game a joke about a meme and a singer or about RPGs in general?

Seriously though, after playing as far as I got I had to wonder if this game is a hit on RPGs as a whole. It very much feels like the developer is poking fun at RPGs with a added storyline of John Daker and memes/youtube scum stuff.
There are many, many instances that feel like it's greatly more focused on making fun of RPGs than anything else.
I think it should have been one way or the other. A joke game about the many flaws in RPGs would probably be better received and played, especially in this community. We get it, that might actually be funny to us rather then the story we are presented.

GRAPHICS:
It's all VX ACE RTP. God, I'm running into this a lot lately(my fault really, I pick the games) But I don't really have much to say about the graphics themselves.
The mapping however, is decent most of the time. It works and does its job.
I wouldn't expect a developer to spend too much time on a joke/comedy game's mapping. But like I said, it's decent. There are flaws though that could be improved or I feel like misuse of tiles.

Wrong roof tiles, bud.

I get what you're going for here, but that's not how that works. :(

Same as the previous image but this one looks okay, from the front only. But still.

MUSIC:
So, I'll hand it to the developer in that he has spliced in live recordings of singers and songs and whatnot into the game. Gives it an extra edge. Sound effects are also weird and somewhat annoying. Like the accept command is what I think is Reva. So you hear it a lot.
It's strange, but I like what he did with it.
The rest is mainly RTP music tracks from what I can tell. Nothing special.

GAMEPLAY:
So, this is an RPG. Might be my first one that I have reviewed that involves combat. It's hard and unforgiving from what I've seen and is what helped to make me quit, because really it's just not worth the hassle to continue.
Alongside the battles you run around a sizable town(I lagged) and talk to people and interact with different things and enemies, NPCs to try and find your confidence and get back into the lime light.

Remember, it's a joke game:

Yeeaaah.

So have a weird qualm about something...

What's up with all these references to Zelda and the chicken scene lately?

I really don't find it funny and think it's overused. Is this funny? I mean, was it ever? Maybe yeaaars ago, but c'mon. Enough is enough.

Overall, it's a game that probably caters to a small group of people. The developer's friends and maybe a few others.
It's not something I would recommend to anybody I know or on RMN. Unless you like these kinds of cheesy joke games then I say don't bother.
It's not worth the effort and while I didn't finish the game I can't imagine it being rewarding in any sense of the word.

Sorry, man.

Thanks for the honest/thorough review. There are definitely a lot of references that people are likely not to get. "It's a game that probably caters to a small group of people." - indeed.

As far as the tile usage goes, I did my best to figure it out but it's been a LONG time since I used the RPG Maker system (RPG Maker 2000, many years ago). I picked up VX ACE on a Steam sale and started poking around it, using Daker's Quest as a way to try and familiarize myself with it again. Apparently, not very well.

You weren't amused by the humor, which doesn't greatly surprise me given that most of the jokes are a cheesy, one-off reference of one kind or another. Of course I wish that you had enjoyed the experience more. Being new to the community here, I didn't realize that the Zelda Chicken reference had been beaten to death, but it makes sense.

I have more experience messing with things musically and absolutely zero talent when it comes to graphic art, which is why there was such heavy reliance upon the RTP resources for graphics and only limited audio creativity.

Fair warning to those who would consider downloading/playing: this review is probably a good/honest outside perspective on a game that maybe should have stayed an inside joke between friends. On the other hand, if you do happen to enjoy it, let me know :)

You definitely have some skills, so please don't let this detour you from game development. It's probably overly harsh but I just don't think joke games are the best way for one to spend their time.
I would love to see you take on a real game, if that's something you'd like to do or have thought about/currently working on.

Because it isn't terrible.

I would like to think you have a firm grasp at least on design and the flow of story/gameplay.
As for using RTP graphics, that's not an overly bad thing. It's just so commonly used you really notice when it isn't being used properly or to its full extent.

It really just isn't my kind of game, sadly.

But again, I would love to see you continue or work on something with a more serious basis or at least something that isn't entirely a "joke game"
You have nice ideas, so if anything maybe make a comedy/joke game about RPGs themselves. As I stated in the review that is what a lot of the jokes(that I actually found funny) were more geared towards. Especially here in a RM community we get it and are pretty hardcore about RPGs to a point where we devote a lot of free time to them. So, what I found funny was the jabs at JRPGS or western RPGs because that's something we here see everyday.
While I shouldn't be encouraging another "niche group" game, I think that poking fun at RPGs is probably pretty universal outside of the rpgmaker.net community.

While this game isn't great, I think you're leagues ahead of other amateur game developers in the RM community on writing and dedication to a subject alone.

edit: I'll also bump this up to a 2.5 for the effort put into it.
