Hello and welcome to... Super Coolgame! Just Kidding! A 2016 game by Mallory16 creted with RPG Maker VX Ace. Yeah, the title is really "Super Coolgame! Just Kidding!", and it's a lighthearted game, that after last review dedicated to a horror adventure it's a good change of mood!
Game start playing as Sophia, the redhead (self-appointed) leader of the all girls team, that has the power of fire! The first task is to collect her schoolmates that are wandering nearby: we have Callie Joann or CJ, the airhead of the group, and also healer of the team!Jackie that is blonde as Callie Joann, but she is instead very smart and has various useful skills, and finally Keyla, the dark, tough girl that has... well no powers or skills (but only in the beginning, do not worry!), except that she's strong and hits hard (anyway the girls will learn new abilities as they level up, of course)!
Help!!! It's just a cake, come on! Please do not kill me!!!
The group has decided to explore a nearby forest, where they will find many items, some other schoolmates and monsters, of course! But the slimes are just the weakest enemy the will find, anyway after exploring and looking for tresures, the adventure will turn into a rescue mission...
And then... I'm not going to say more, because otherwise I'd spoil the rest of the game, anyway this is both a lighthearted adventure that resemble a saturday morning cartoon and also a classic rpgmaker rpg adventure complete with combat, collectibles and minigames!
The game is about 4-5 hours long but you can easily waste about 8 hours or more with it if you take the time to explore every place, fight hidden bosses, collect the collectibles, and waste even more time on minigames. Speaking about the minigames, there are two, but I'll tell you about one, that's a sort of Pac-man clone with a redhead girl that has to collect green gems and avoid hostile people.
Then there are the collectibles, and luckily the developer indicated every locations on this page (under "Red Jewels"), since these 50 red jewels will unlock and extra part of the game with an extra (albeit brief) special ending! Cool!
There are many monsters, and slimes and zombies are probably the less original of the bunch, but I'll let you discover them! They're all cute by the way!
But then lets speak of the main game: for the most part you go around and interact with things, facing enemies in random encounters or boss battles. Being this a lighthearted game, most opponents won't be that dangerous, but some of these are can of spam, vending machines or bottles of water, except for some classics like various types of slimes, robots, zombies and giant bats and rats!
Bosses are instead another matter since they're often pretty tough and with some nasty abilities, they will require all the effort of the girl team to defeat them. Luckily the game is rather generous concerning the loot and money, that is used to buy consumables that produces various effects. Or also tokens to play the minigames, to win more money and prizes! Also you can szve anywhere (from the menu) BUT some save points DO exist, probably to underline place where it is suggested to save or just to make you remember to do that!
There's also the presence of various puzzles and enigmas to solve, nothing very hard, but a nice diversion, also there will be some parts in which our protagonists will be separated and/or will have some guest party member.
The most funny and interesting parts of the game are the interactions, dialogues and exploration, since almost everything you notice on the map will provide some kind of effect/dialogue/description if interacted with! That's notheworthy considered the variety od places.
This is not the treasure that I expected, but that's ok, as long as the girls are so happy!
Yes, because the forest is just the beginning of the adventure, that will lead the four girls inside a castle, underground, at a fun fair, at McDonald's and so on. Yes, it's clearly not your typical fantasy jrpg adventure!
Anyway despite the massive use of Rtps there are also many edits and custom sprites: for example battlers, facesets (that includes different expressions for every characters and match the corresponding charsets) and numerous cutscenes are all drawn by Gemma Moody. Impressive, since almost every single character has its own custom made faceset in various versions, there are many different cute enemy battlers, and the cutscenes are very well done. There are also some icons, sprites and tilesets from other developers, anyway in the end the style of the game is coherent and adequate to the cartoonish atmosphere!
Music is instead not original, in fact I recognized some popular themes and song, even if my knowledge is too limited to remind the titles, anyway I think that here that was done an adequate job, as for the maps, but story, dialogues and custom graphics are the best part, including the many interactions available and the humor (for example every time the brand "Coca cola", loved by CJ, is mentioned during the adventure by the girls, they earn 100 money for endorsement!).
PacMan-ripoff that is not PacMan at all! We are the redhead girl on the right and we have to collect all the gems avoiding other people like the grim bandaged lady. Oh and each level is different! Cool!
Final Verdict
Super Coolgame! Just Kidding! Is really ad COOL game! Not a joke! The developer spent lots of time and attention on details and to make the game feel unique (can I describe it as a "dialogue-heavy dungeon crawler"? Because aside for the lighthearted modern setting, it's exactly this!). Just look how the skills of the girls really complement their personality, how they are different and interact during the story! It's fun, trust me.
Then there are the minigames, the puzzles and combat, that except for the bossfights, is really a breeze. But that's not the main course, I mean this is a game about exploration and funny dialogues, a nice simple story in which you can find the team fighting their evil robot clones or playing a Pacman rip-off, buying donuts and helping people!
A little great game, try it, I found it more (longer, better, deeper, funnier) than what I expected! Solid, well though out and fun, that's a 4/5!

Ah, thank you! I don't come here regularly, so I just saw the review. I'm glad you liked the game. It was a lot of work, but also a lot of fun, and a lot of fun thinking of more interactions to add while I was working on the game.

Hey hello!
I am glad I did not stop when I saw the apparently classical graphic assets, because this game is in fact very fun and enjoyable. And also not a classic rmk game as it appears!
