The Dark God Uzola was slain ages ago, torn to shreds by a guardian goddess when Uzola tried to manifest in the human world. As time passed and the goddess's power waned, the Holy Empire of Zerymos was established to protect the world from the power of Darkness.

For as long as she could remember, Ceaira has lived in the sealed ruins, with only creatures of shadow for companions. One day the door to the ruins open, and Ceaira is able to explore the outside world for the first time ever, meeting strange new friends. However, the Holy Knights of Zerymos want her dead at any cost and a dark force seeks her for a sinister purpose.

Eye of Uzola is a game that I originally started as a teenager with RPG Maker 2000. Originally intended to be a massive game with an 80 hour playtime and a cast of 30 playable characters, the game was abandoned after only achieving 40 hours of playtime and half of the story. Now that I'm older and more experienced, I'm trying to tell this story again, on a much smaller scale, with 9 playable characters instead.

Beautiful tilesets, characters and game assets by JosephSeraph!

Character designs, character art and co-written by Sooz!

This game will be constructed over a long period of time, as all of the assets are custom. I'll be working on other projects concurrently as this one is developed.

Character Introductions: Lucien

Got another character introduction for you all! ^_^

Lucien is a Holy Knight of Zerymos who will come into contact with Ceaira and Felise by chance during his quest to thwart the looming demonic invasion.

Alban, Durant's father, noticed Lucien's talent for both swordplay and fire ether, and had Lucien trained as a Holy Knight. There were high hopes that one day Lucien could become a powerful demon slayer.

Even though Alban has passed on, Lucien still carries on his will and continues to polish his skills in order to fell any demonic foe that dares invade the holy lands.

Lucien is proficient with the sword and is able to unleash powerful fire-based special attacks, as well as fire/holy support abilities that raise his power and give him health regeneration.

Oh, maaaaan, that personal aside really gets me. I mean, I don't have my "grand adventure in TsuK" anymore, but, I guess I did this?

This is awesome, congrats Uni! :D
Working on this game has been a pleasure as well as very challenging! One of the most creatively exciting thigns I've ever done as an artist is tileset and spritework with uni. Was definitely the best part of Ascent too and we're both very happy to have worked together on it :D
Gonna give it my best to give this game a very particular visual flavor~ <3
The sprites and graphics in this look fantastic. Good job to the team on this one!
Those sprites, god damn! Lots of SNES heart already.

When I started reading the description, at first I thought "that sounds awfully full of cliches for a game developed by unity." Then I kept on reading, and it sounds much more interesting now. I kind of expect this project to completely turn the old "Light is Good, Darkness is Evil" trope on its head now. Am I wrong in assuming that?

Either way, I'll keep an eye on this. (Pun absolutely intended.)

You're not wrong, no, but I want to keep most of the details pretty secret for now. I can't claim that the story is 100% free of cliches either, as I'm working on a pretty general JRPG world with a good handful of twists here and there but a lot of the standards, too. I'll leave a little more info under a hide tag for anyone that's interested, but can also be avoided if you want no spoilers at all, even vague ones.

This isn't a full subversion of the genre, so I can't promise the sort of massive twists and storytelling that a more talented storyteller like SCF could provide. However, I still think you'll find it interesting at the very least. Think of it as more of a middle-ground, a game that is both indulging in JRPG conventions as well as defying some of them.

The Holy Empire isn't exactly pure-good, and its ruler is highly flawed, and several heroes who work for him will notice this and their decisions will affect the story. The villain of the story is in fact a demon, as cliched as that is, but his actions are tied up in fulfilling a legacy left to him by his fallen father rather than being pure evil for evil's sake. I hope he'll prove to be more compelling than Darkloft or other villains I have written.

Just as a general thing, I am very, very fond of moralities as separate from elemental affinities, so most of the time you can expect a project I'm involved in writing to avoid that kind of simplistic morality. (There's another one in process that has the basic light hero vs dark enemy setup, but it's more man vs nature than man vs man.)
Cliches don't matter. The flavor of the story is the important thing here. If you read a Wikipedia summary of most good stories, they would seem cliche. If someone obsesses over making every plot element be "original" they eventually lose sight of what's actually important: a good story to tell. The twists and turns of the emotions of both player and character is very hard and unwise to describe via a plot summary. That's just my two cents on that haha.

Hey, thanks for the response, unity! I think your ideas do sound like a good compromise and a solid take on the subject matter without trying too hard to tell a story purely for its subversive potential. I mostly agree with what zDS says, it's more about how you use and present your themes to make them compelling, and give them enough personal spin to keep them from becoming stale. And as far as I know, you are perfectly capable of doing that, so I'm looking forward to seeing the results.

Oh, by the way, I forgot to ask the obligatory question: Do you need any testers for when the time comes? Because if so, I'll volunteer.

That's a great perspective on this subject. Thanks, Sooz!

Cool, another uni game with some superb backing band.
This looks very promising! Subbed!
Very nice pixel arts, I can't wait to see a bit of gameplay! Subbed ^^!
Can't get to that pulsating floor screenshot:

It looks really neat, it's too bad the there's never going on the circle in the middle of the screen. All those pulsating lines going there and it being the focus of the room, it really should have some color animation I think.
