Hello, knights and princesses!
We're here to talk about a new game, and once again it's another short rpg adventure ! This game that is titled "Dream Quest: Knight and Princess", and took me exactly 1 hour and 25 minutes to completed, it was made with RPG Maker VX Ace by Unity and Ebeth (that took care of the custom graphics) for the the 2017 ten-day Retromania event. Yes, this is another event game, but I played the more polished version and... let's see what happens here!
The plot of "Dream Quest: Knight and Princess" isn't original at all: Princess Isela has been captured by the evil Dark Lord Leirwrex that kidnapped and imprisoned her inside his castle in the world of dreams. But Gwyn the Knight, Isela's love, has no intention to surrender and proceed to start a journey to free the princess.
Oh very helpful indeed! A merchant will always be helful since enemies drop gold once defeated!
This is the plot, and everything you need to know, it's simple and straight to the point (also the ending sequence is very short and abrupt, but I think it's ok for an event game), even if there are also some extra secondary characters, the main protagonists of the story are just the lovers and the bad guy. The first two are also party members, together with other two cute characters, Fluffy the Cat and Dusty the Bat, that are useful to make combat more interesting, since a one-party-member quest would be pretty boring, don't you agree?
Well, these two friends will not only provide some funny dialogues exchanges, but they will also help in combat with their different skills while Gwyn traverse the three different areas (or levels). Combat, like the plot, isn't really original, and it's the usual RPG Maker VX Ace series of battles that include some obligatory battles with bosses.
Enemies includes the obligatory boss encounters! The key to win is to use the right skills, of course!
Enemies are fought in old classic random encounters, but luckily at least you can save anytime from the menu (no need for save points), and what's more important is that you can also choose the difficulty of the game between four different levels. And if you chose badly you can still rectify your choice from the menu, so no need to restart the game! Cool. A merchant called Elva also provides some supplies during the adventure, so take advantage of that!
Visually the game has a really cute retro style, and all the assets are custom made by Ebeth. There's a limited palette selection that uses few colors: black, white, blue, grey, pink, green, dark green and magenta. That's it, well just look at the pics and you will have an idea of what the game looks like. Mapping is ok, and the game is pretty simple and linear, anyway it stands out due to its peculiar style, I like that!
Concerning sound and music there isn't much to say, it's delightfully retro (8-bit styled music, of course! It was made for the RETROmania event!) and simple but fitting the style of this adventure, and it completes the game nicely (that's surely much better than using the old classic RTP assets, of course!).
The kitty is absolutely right!!! Excellent, the lovers are riunited, but the game doesn't end here! Let's ge outta here! And read the...
Final Verdict!
"Dream Quest: Knight and Princess" is a solid little classic rpg game, a short complete adventure that maybe could have been enhanced by some more cutcenes, bor example in the beginning and for the ending, but it's mostly ok as it is. For an event game, it's very good and competently made! Good job, devs!
