The Doctrine of Perseverance and Flowers for Kasumi Merge

Hello again!

The last blog post I made for this project I stated that this game would be on hiatus, while hinting at The Doctrine of Perseverance's reannouncement. Flowers for Kasumi will continue to remain in hiatus at this time, but it's story will take place in the same setting as The Doctrine of Perseverance, in Noxton.

The reason why it's relevant to post this on Flowers for Kasumi's blog is because I can confirm at least one member from this game will be in The Doctrine of Perseverance — Isaac! (Formerly Issei/ Mr. Adachi) Some other characters in FFK will see name changes as well in the future.

Exciting Changes Are Coming to Flowers for Kasumi!

Hello! I’m super pumped to be writing this post albeit a little nervous. I’ve been chugging on the game much harder lately, and I think my efforts really have paid off. The most important thing to show you guys as of now is that… there are new portraits!




I know this will disappoint some people that liked the previous art style more, but I didn’t have the money to keep commissioning cutscene graphics, the premade assets are very recognizable, and there was a lot I wanted to change with the characters design wise. One of the most noticeable new things is that there are custom uniforms, and Kasumi’s look, which has drastically changed the most.

Again, I’m sorry if this upsets anyone but I had to do what was best for me, and in the end I like the new portraits more, mostly because I can customize them easier. I’ve also made new sprites (in the first and last screenshot).

I’m also going to be changing the title screen, adding more stuff to the title screen (which will be secret, for now), and I’m changing the character menu a bit more so it’ll be able to show the full bodies of the character + extra.

I’m going to have to refinish drawing the rest of the cast, redrawing a couple CGs, and the title screen. It won’t take super long. I’ll probably post a poll eventually so you guys can vote to see which character you’ll want revealed next, with the exception of Adachi, I’m going to post him once I finish!

Also, going to be updating the various screen shots on here with the new art/deleting some outdated ones! Thank you for reading!

Character Redesign: Asaka


Summary

Hello everyone! I'm happy to announce that we've updated one of the portraits for the game. It's a small update, however I think it goes well for how we're progressing the character.

Asaka has very much needed an update. I think we both felt the character needed an overhaul for her portrait, as it didn't really fit her at all. We made the character's portrait before we even fleshed out her story, and since we've made her history it just hadn't went well with her looks. She now fits perfectly with her story, and we are very much happy with how she looks now.

Developer Notes

Eredoh: I personally think this fits a lot more than her previous portrait, and I absolutely love her new hair color! It fit's her so well, and I'm so happy with the changes. I liked and also didn't like her previous portrait. It went well with her at the time, but, that was when we knew nothing about her as a character. After we fleshed out her character more, it became more and more apparent that she definitely needed a change. I hope you guys like her new changes, as she's one of the characters I love to write about.

Nedras: Asaka is an important character in the story of Flowers for Kasumi. We originally designed Asaka to be feisty and sweet, with her personality being the same even today. In the original photo we see that her hair is a mustard yellow color. I orignally had lots of mixed feelings with this hair color, I really wanted to like it, I mean I even chose the damn color! But it just didn't work out, so we changed it. The teal is all better, and I think the long hair really suits Asaka. I can't wait to show you guys more of Asaka!

Update 12/17

Hello!! Nedras here! It’s been so long since I’ve made a development update! So during the time I wasn’t updating the blog, we have been working on a great deal of stuff and changing a lot too! Since this is going to be a long post, here is an outline for the post for your convenience:

1. Writing Rework

Flowers for Kasumi was originally planned to be an extremely short game that could be made within a weekend. As Eredoh and I started writing and developing the story more and more, the game ended up having a lot more depth then expected, making the game’s story unable to fit a 15-30 minute game. That’s when the first rework began. In the first rework, the majority of the game was set at Kumashina Private and went over a span of approximately two weeks. We had to write dialogue for 30+ characters each day. The game started to feel less mystery, and more slice of life like. Not to mention, we didn’t like how the flow of the game felt in that version.

Alas came the second rework of Flowers for Kasumi. This includes the current version uploaded of the game. We like this version a lot, but it had a whole lot of backstory that we wrote and it went on for pages. The background characters didn’t quite stand out as much as the main three either. So this is where we changed it. The third rework condenses the backstory, expands on background characters more, and generally makes our lives 10x easier while writing dialogue/story in RPG Maker.

This doesn’t necessarily affect anything in the demo–ALMOST everything is the same from the demo. Just from there is a lot different than before. With the writing rework, I estimate the game will be a lot easier to complete and that it’ll be done a lot faster.

2. Inactive Period

I’m going to be completely honest, there was about 3-4 works of inactivity for FFK. No work was done in this time. I had been deal with IRL stuff and so was Eredoh. This led us to take a step away from the game and using our extra time for whatever seemed right for us. Progress has been up and steady for though for the last couple of weeks.

3. Current Progress & What Needs to Be Done

The current progress of the game is roughly 25%. By the end of the night I think I’m going to get it at least up to 45% because I have about 8 hours to work on the game and I am feeling 200% inspired. I really just wanna go, go, and go! Maybe I’ll get more done, but I’m going to aim for 45% as of now.

Note: Eredoh isn’t working on the game with me tonight because she’s going on vacation to see some family! She’ll be back in about a week or so.

A whole lot needs to be done, that’s for sure! Actually–not a super huge amount. We need to finish the first area, implement five discoverable secrets in the first area, work on the second area, work on the climax of the story, the endings, and then the bonus room!

4. New Characters


Three of them, to be exact! They are extremely important to the story, perhaps the three most important after Kasumi, Isa, & Omoka.

5. Conclusion

If you read this far, go ahead and give yourself a pat on the back. You EARNED it. Hopefully this post clears up the empty space of time of no posts.
