You Are Tearing Me Apart, Ashes!

Yeah so I heard about this game through word of mouth, IRC specifically, so I checked it out.

Honestly this game baffles me; for several reasons. For one, the concept actually has some potential, some dudes stuck in a room for whatever reason isn't bad on paper, I suppose. The issue with these nontraditional plot concepts is that most people don't have the necessary skill set or background to pull it off, and well, this is a textbook example.

There really isn't a lot to this game so I won't fluff up this article too much and keep it short and to the point and tell you exactly how I feel about it; after all, the game itself is what, five minutes? Right from jump street, the music is some grunge rock, whatever is that completely deconstructs whatever mood the premise could have hoped to accomplish; it's difficult to feel immersed in getting out of a dark room when I can just rock out with my cock out for five min-oh wait, it loops every thirty seconds. Great.

I'm not sure what he was going for as far as the graphics go, the visual style of the room is fine, it's dark, there are a few tools and bare furniture alright, sure, but are those Pokemon charsets? Is that Professor Oak?

As far as the plotline goes, this game is like, five minutes, so there isn't much at all. Some Professor Oak lookin' dude gets locked in a room with some other dudes. One guy is a little kid or something, and some insignificant chick, and some other person. None of these characters are very fleshed out and no motivation or background is given on any of them. I don't even know why it was particularly important or notable to mention that the main character is a professor because it is entirely irrelevant to absolutely anything. The events of the game (all 5-10 minutes of them) are pretty hodge-podge right up to the end.

The gameplay is entirely nonexistent. There is no real mystery to solve, no puzzles, no item management, or whatever that's usually apparent with these type of games. It's basically just 'investigate everything over and over again until people start saying different things'. I found a screwdriver though and that was pretty rad.

So yeah, this game is fun if you want to click some buttons for a few minutes. That's not usually very fun, though. It's pretty pointless. It didn't inspire any sort of emotion or feeling or anything and by the end I was all like "Alright, well, uh, time to finish watching Mean Girls. This is significant to mention I think because I usually take something away from a game upon finishing it, even those silly little Flash games from Newgrounds, but this game was more of 'press some buttons for like 5, 10 minutes and do something else well see ya'.

It's funny because now that I think about it, I think I played a game with a very similar concept on Newgrounds a few years ago and had a blast, and it actually required me to think about how to escape the room I was in and to cleverly utilize the resources given to me. No such luck in this game I don't mean to rail against this game, its creator, or his visions, and this is just my honest to god impression of the game. Take it for what you will.

Reading this review reminded of that mystery Halloween game from 2008 (I believe) where you are told not to leave your room because of *something*, and just about every note points towards something that has already happened, mainly that you cannot interact with the computer or the telephone. Unlike this game, "The Room" leaves you with no feeling or questioning about what has happened. "You are a pawn in a test to see who ends up killing who" I guess would be the summary of this game.
Okay all I have to say to that is okay, you didn't like it. But while I don't agree with what you're saying, I'll defend to the death your right to say it. Please keep in mind, that I posted this game because It was created for a game contest held on Angel-spire. The contest is called "THE FIVE MINUTE GAME CONTEST" One specification is that the game must be able to be beaten in five minutes or less. My brother at the time of writing the story for this game was 10, so I apologize for the poor script and story development. He picked the sprites and the chip-sets and was influenced by Saw(the first movie hence the toilet and screens tint) He told me what he wanted and I made it by his direction. I am making no excuse for any of the points you all have brought up, I'm just clarifying why the game is so short, and the poor character development. Thanks.

Mean girls wins.
Mean Girls is actually a very funny and clever movie. Having a sister currently in high school, and remembering high school myself, it's an interesting take (and accurate in spirit) on high school culture and how people generally are. Tiny Fey is a comedic genius. And yes, I really did/do had the movie on while I was playing the game.

To the creator though; I did have the respect to pause the movie and give my full attention to the game while playing it!

...who lets a 10 year-old watch Saw?

Also, thanks for being receptive to the criticism. It sounds like you are realistic in terms of what to expect.

I just played this game.

Damn, this WAS a waste of time. The characters were lifeless, the plot was predictable. It felt like something submitted in a 24-hour contest.
